A set S of vertices in a graph G is an independent dominating set of G if S is an independent set and every vertex not in S is adjacent to a vertex in S. In this paper, we consider questions about independent domination in regular graphs.

The Application Of Evidence-Based Practices By Usm Student Athletes To Manage Exercise-Induced Asthma Symptoms, Meagan N. Ishee Dec 2012

The Application Of Evidence-Based Practices By Usm Student Athletes To Manage Exercise-Induced Asthma Symptoms, Meagan N. Ishee

Honors Theses

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine if EIA student athletes at USM are being educated about and implementing evidence based practices that help manage asthma symptoms for each individual. EIA is a prevalent disorder affecting collegiate athletes. Non-pharmacological evidence-based practices can be used by EIA athletes to minimize asthma symptoms. Modifications to the athlete’s breathing techniques, diet, and warm-up protocol can be implemented to reduce asthma symptoms. To determine if athletes at USM are using these practices, a survey questioning their education and implementation of these practices was administered to all the USM athletes. Of the 331 …

Parenting Styles, Peer Pressure, And The Formation Of Antisocial Behavior, Erinisha L. Johnson Dec 2012

Parenting Styles, Peer Pressure, And The Formation Of Antisocial Behavior, Erinisha L. Johnson

Honors Theses

The current study examined the relationship between antisocial behavior, negative parenting, and peer pressure. It was predicted that peer pressure and negative parenting would be positively correlated with antisocial behavior, but that negative parenting would be more statistically significant. There were 177 male and female college students who completed the Subtypes of Antisocial Behavior questionnaire, the Measurement of Parenting Style, the Peer Pressure and Popularity questionnaire, and a short demographics survey. Results indicated that negative parenting and peer pressure were both related to antisocial behavior (p< .001). However, the final hypothesis was rejected because the results indicated that peer pressure (p < .001) and not negative parenting (p<.05), showed to be more statistically significant. It may be suggested that peer pressure may overpower parenting, after a certain age.

English Identity In The Writings Of John Milton, Hannah E. Ryan Dec 2012

English Identity In The Writings Of John Milton, Hannah E. Ryan

Honors Theses

John Milton is an essential writer to the English canon. Understanding his life and thought is necessary to understanding his corpus. This thesis will examine Milton’s nationalism in several major and minor poems as well as in some of Milton’s prose. It will argue that Milton’s nationalism is difficult to trace chronologically, but that education is always essential to Milton’s national vision of England.

Do Banks Monitor Corporate Decisions? Evidence From Bank Financing Of Mergers & Acquisitions, Sheng Huang, Anand Srinivasan, Ruichang Lu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine whether banks, in providing nancing for the deals, monitor rms mergers and acquisitions to the extent that will bene t acquirers shareholders. Incon- sistent with the conventional theoretical argument, we do not nd that bank- nanced deals are associated with better stock or accounting performance than bond- nanced deals or deals paid with internal cash. There is strong evidence instead that banks tighten up the loan contract terms in nancing the deals, such as cutting short the loan maturity and imposing higher collateral requirement and more covenant restrictions. However, bank- nanced deals are more likely to be terminated …

The emerging economies of Asia are increasingly playing a critical role in the global arena, even as there is continuing turmoil and uncertainty in other parts of the world due to economic, financial and political upheavals. While Asian economies are undoubtedly impacted by global headwinds, most of them have been buffered by their sound economic and policy fundamentals, healthy domestic demand and continued inflow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Meanwhile, Asia is undergoing its own transformation: many countries in Asia are experiencing greater economic prosperity and rising affluence, translating into higher demand for goods and services. As businesses flock to …

Neuropsychological Outcomes In Adults Commencing Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Treatment In South Africa: A Prospective Study, Ja Joska, J Westgarth-Taylor, J Hoare, Kgf Thomas, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

BACKGROUND: Infection with HIV may result in significant neuropsychological impairment, especially in late stage disease. To date, there have been no cohort studies of the impact of highly active anti-retroviral treatment (HAART) in South Africa where clade C HIV is predominant. METHODS: Participants in the current study were recruited from a larger study of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) and included a group of individuals commencing HAART (n = 82). Baseline and one-year neuropsychological function was assessed using a detailed battery, and summary global deficit scores (GDS) obtained. Associations with change in GDS were calculated. RESULTS: Participants had a median CD4 …

Divided We Stand: Defying Hegemony In Theory And Practice, Anne Gregory, Gregor Halff Dec 2012

Divided We Stand: Defying Hegemony In Theory And Practice, Anne Gregory, Gregor Halff

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The last decade has seen the world becoming increasingly complex. One way of dealing with complexity, according to Schwab (2010a), is to look for certainties or solutions that impose order by simplifying. The authors contend that this is also happening in public relations practice and the academy. They criticise attempts to produce global models which lead to hegemony and argue for maintaining a diversity that reflects reality. They take the cases of the UK and Singapore as respective exemplars where hegemony has succeeded and where it needs to be resisted. They call for a professional and epistemological stand against hegemony.

Cyberloafing At The Workplace: Gain Or Drain On Work?, Vivien K. G. Lim, Don Jiaqing Chen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examined the impact of cyberloafing on employees' emotion and work. We also examined gender differences in employees' perception towards cyberloafing. In general, respondents felt that some form of cyberloafing at work was acceptable. Men were also more likely to report that cyberloafing has a positive impact on work compared to women. As well, our findings suggest that browsing activities have a positive impact on employees' emotion while emailing activities have a negative impact. Results of our study provide useful insights for researchers and managers in understanding employees' attitudes towards cyberloafing, and how cyberloafing can result in gain or …

Whither the National Labor Relations Board?

Go to the NLRB’s website and you’ll find only two faces and two names:

• Wilma B, Liebman, Chairman, and

• Peter Carey Schaumber, now in his second term.

The page also lists three vacancies. Why? “The National Labor Relations Board

has operated with only two members for more than two years because Democrats refused

to confirm President George W. Bush’s nominees because of complaints that they were

pro-business. Republicans now are blocking President Obama’s nominees, complaining

that some favor union interests.” [Jesse J. Holland, “Supreme Court looks at labor board,”

Educational Genocide: Examining The Impact Of National Education Policy On African American Communities, Christopher B. Knaus, Rachelle Rogers-Ard Nov 2012

Educational Genocide: Examining The Impact Of National Education Policy On African American Communities, Christopher B. Knaus, Rachelle Rogers-Ard

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

Abstract This paper clarifies the cumulative impact of the current national education policy on African-American children, which ultimately aims to limit local control of urban schools. The authors argue that urban schools in the United States are increasingly required to rely upon temporary teachers who are trained to implement a curriculum focused on standardized testing. The No Child Left Behind Act and the current Duncan administration’s approach to closing (and re-opening) schools combines to further exclude low-income community involvement in local schools. These efforts to control the development, hiring, and evaluation of local educators further expands educational racism that silences …
