Convergence And Multidisciplinarity In Nanotechnology: Laboratories As Technological Hubs, Nicolas Battard Jan 2012

Convergence And Multidisciplinarity In Nanotechnology: Laboratories As Technological Hubs, Nicolas Battard

Articles

This article argues that research groups dedicated to nanoscience and nanotechnology are considered as technological hubs where scientists with multiple backgrounds converge in order to conduct research at the nanoscale (a billionth of a metre). Scientific production is therefore challenged as multiple ways of thinking, practices and knowledge participate in the creation of new outcomes. Through an exploratory and inductive study, I show that these technological hubs develop a specialisation based on internal competencies and stock of knowledge. The specialisation enables laboratories to position themselves as an expert among other laboratories as well as making them more visible in order …

On The Evolutionary Co-Adaptation Of Morphology And Distributed Neural Controllers In Adaptive Agents, Mariagiovanna Mazzapioda Jan 2012

On The Evolutionary Co-Adaptation Of Morphology And Distributed Neural Controllers In Adaptive Agents, Mariagiovanna Mazzapioda

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The attempt to evolve complete embodied and situated artificial creatures in which both morphological and control characteristics are adapted during the evolutionary process has been and still represents a long term goal key for the artificial life and the evolutionary robotics community. Loosely inspired by ancient biological organisms which are not provided with a central nervous system and by simple organisms such as stick insects, this thesis proposes a new genotype encoding which allows development and evolution of mor- phology and neural controller in artificial agents provided with a distributed neural network. In order to understand if this kind of …

Microtaxonomy Of Fragmenting Enchytraeus Species Using Molecular Markers, With A Comment On Species Complexes In Enchytraeids, Rut Collado, Eva Hass-Cordes, Ruediger Schmelz Jan 2012

Microtaxonomy Of Fragmenting Enchytraeus Species Using Molecular Markers, With A Comment On Species Complexes In Enchytraeids, Rut Collado, Eva Hass-Cordes, Ruediger Schmelz

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Populations of Enchytraeus that reproduce by fragmentation are distributed worldwide, but their species-level taxonomy is unresolved because morphological differences are inconclusive. Therefore, we compared the isozyme and RAPD-PCR patterns of 5 populations of fragmenting enchytraeids from widely distant localities (Japan, Iran, Greece, and Brazil). Among these populations, 3 were identified (E. japonensis, E. bigeminus, and E. dudichi) and 2 were unidentified. Multiple isozyme bands suggested polyploidy in all investigated populations. In all RAPD-PCR algorithms except 1, the fragmenting group formed a cluster separate from 2 nonfragmenting Enchytraeus species. All 5 populations were clearly separable on the levels of protein and …

Parasitic Hymenoptera Reared From The Insects On Heracleum Platytaenium Boiss. (Apiaceae) With New Faunistic And Biological Records, Erhan Koçak, Mustafa Özdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Some parasitic hymenopterans were reared from their host insects found on the stems and branches of Heracleum platytaenium Boiss., which contains furanocoumarins that are insect repellents and suppress growth in some species. Plant materials with insects were collected from the vicinity of Kızılcahamam in Ankara Province in July-September 2008. The parasitoids (Hymenoptera) and their hosts were Didyctium brunnea (Belizin) (Eucolidae) from puparia of Lasiambia albidipennis (Strobl) (Diptera: Chloropidae), Pronotalia carlinarum (Szelenyi & Erdos) (Eulophidae) and Homoporus febriculosus (Girault) (Pteromalidae) from puparia of Melanagromyza heracleana Zlobin (Diptera: Agromyzidae), and Baryscapus crassicornis (Erdos) (Eulophidae) from larvae, pupae, and adults of Lixus nordmanni …

Contributions Of Dynamic Systems Theory To Cognitive Development, John P. Spencer, Andrew Austin, Anne R. Schutte Jan 2012

Contributions Of Dynamic Systems Theory To Cognitive Development, John P. Spencer, Andrew Austin, Anne R. Schutte

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This paper examines the contributions of dynamic systems theory to the field of cognitive development, focusing on modeling using dynamic neural fields. A brief overview highlights the contributions of dynamic systems theory and the central concepts of dynamic field theory (DFT). We then probe empirical predictions and findings generated by DFT around two examples—the DFT of infant perseverative reaching that explains the Piagetian A-not-B error, and the DFT of spatial memory that explain changes in spatial cognition in early development. A systematic review of the literature around these examples reveals that computational modeling is having an impact on empirical research …

Collecting And Preserving Parasites During Reptile Biodiversity Surveys, Scott Lyell Gardner, Robert N. Fisher, Sean J. Barry Jan 2012

Collecting And Preserving Parasites During Reptile Biodiversity Surveys, Scott Lyell Gardner, Robert N. Fisher, Sean J. Barry

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Obtaining parasites from reptiles that are collected during biological diversity surveys or inventories is time consuming, and in the past such collections were rarely made (Gardner 1996). However, parasites and other symbionts are integral parts of the ecological characteristics of organisms and provide important information on biodiversity from the population level to the species level. For example, recent biogeographic analyses of the skinks, geckos, and anoles of some Oceanic Pacific Islands (Bertrand and Ineich 1986, 1987, 1989; Goldberg and Bursey 1991, 2000, 2002; Hanley et. al 1995; Goldberg et al. 2005) could not have been accomplished without parallel studies of …

Are Ascaris Lumbricoides And Ascaris Suum A Single Species?, Daniela Leles, Scott L. Gardner, Karl Reinhard, Alena Iñiguez, Adauto Araujo Jan 2012

Are Ascaris Lumbricoides And Ascaris Suum A Single Species?, Daniela Leles, Scott L. Gardner, Karl Reinhard, Alena Iñiguez, Adauto Araujo

Karl Reinhard Publications

Since the original description and naming of Ascaris lumbricoides from humans by Linnaeus in 1758 and later of Ascaris suum from pigs by Goeze 1782, these species have been considered to be valid. Four hypotheses relative to the conspecificity or lack thereof (and thus origin of these species) are possible: 1) Ascaris lumbricoides (usually infecting humans) and Ascaris suum (recorded mostly from pigs) are both valid species, with the two species originating via a speciation event from a common ancestor sometime before the domestication of pigs by humans, or 2) Ascaris lumbricoides in humans is derived directly from the species …

Role Of Extracytoplasmic Function Sigma Factors In Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Suhasini Yanamandra Sai Jan 2012

Role Of Extracytoplasmic Function Sigma Factors In Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Suhasini Yanamandra Sai

Theses and Dissertations

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a major etiological agent that is responsible for the cause and progression of periodontal diseases. The bacterium is exposed to various environmental conditions and oxidative stress conditions while it is in the oral cavity. So, P. gingivalis should have an efficient regulatory system in order to adjust and survive in the oral cavity. But little is known about the regulatory mechanisms that help the bacteria to survive in the oral cavity. So, it is essential to understand and characterize these regulatory mechanisms. The response and adaptation of P. gingivalis to environmental stress conditions occur at the level …

Probing Molecular Mechanisms Of The Hsp90 Chaperone: Biophysical Modeling Identifies Key Regulators Of Functional Dynamics, Anshuman Dixit, Gennady M. Verkhivker

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Deciphering functional mechanisms of the Hsp90 chaperone machinery is an important objective in cancer biology aiming to facilitate discovery of targeted anti-cancer therapies. Despite significant advances in understanding structure and function of molecular chaperones, organizing molecular principles that control the relationship between conformational diversity and functional mechanisms of the Hsp90 activity lack a sufficient quantitative characterization. We combined molecular dynamics simulations, principal component analysis, the energy landscape model and structure-functional analysis of Hsp90 regulatory interactions to systematically investigate functional dynamics of the molecular chaperone. This approach has identified a network of conserved regions common to the Hsp90 chaperones that could …

In Vitro Study Of The Microsporidian Parasite Loma Morhua, Using Cod-Derived Cells And Novel Culture Techniques, Michael J. Macleod Jan 2012

In Vitro Study Of The Microsporidian Parasite Loma Morhua, Using Cod-Derived Cells And Novel Culture Techniques, Michael J. Macleod

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The cod populations of the Canadian Atlantic were once highly productive, generating enormous annual harvests and attracting fishing fleets from many nations. However, through the late 1980s improved fishing technology, unprecedented capture rates, and poor fishery management brought wild stocks beyond the point of collapse. Dwindling harvests in the early 1990s resulted in cod fishing moratoriums, and an end to the productivity for which the fishery was once renowned. Atlantic cod remains a popular food worldwide and the collapse of cod fisheries has done little to abate market demands. Consequently, the cod is considered a prime candidate for aquaculture production, …

Genetic Measures Confirm Familial Relationships And Strengthen Study Design, Stacie J. Robinson, Ryan D. Walrath, Timonthy R. Vandeelen, Kurt C. Vercauteren

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Social structure and behavioral interactions between individuals shape basic biological processes, such as breeding; foraging and predator avoidance; movement and dispersal; and disease transmission. We used a targeted trapping strategy to capture kin groups of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) during 2007 and 2008 in Sandhill Wildlife Research Area, Wisconsin, USA, in order to observe social behaviors. Because inferring family relationships from observation of behavior is subjective, we usedmeasures of genetic relatedness and parentage assignment tests to determine that our capture strategy was efficient for capturing related pairs (78% of groups contained 1 dyad of related animals). The results of …

Curcumin, a natural diphenolic compound derived from turmeric Curcuma longa, has proven to be a modulator of intracellular signaling pathways that control cancer cell growth, inflammation, invasion, apoptosis and cell death, revealing its anticancer potential. In this review, we focus on the design and development of nanoparticles, self-assemblies, nanogels, liposomes and complex fabrication for sustained and efficient curcumin delivery. We also discuss the anticancer applications and clinical benefits of nanocurcumin formulations. Only a few novel multifunctional and composite nanosystem strategies offer simultaneous therapy as well as imaging characteristics. We also summarize the challenges to developing curcumin delivery platforms and …

Scale Invariant Object Recognition Using Cortical Computational Models And A Robotic Platform, Danny Voils Jan 2012

Scale Invariant Object Recognition Using Cortical Computational Models And A Robotic Platform, Danny Voils

Dissertations and Theses

This paper proposes an end-to-end, scale invariant, visual object recognition system, composed of computational components that mimic the cortex in the brain. The system uses a two stage process. The first stage is a filter that extracts scale invariant features from the visual field. The second stage uses inference based spacio-temporal analysis of these features to identify objects in the visual field. The proposed model combines Numenta's Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM), with HMAX developed by MIT's Brain and Cognitive Science Department. While these two biologically inspired paradigms are based on what is known about the visual cortex, HTM and HMAX …

Generic Structure Of Introductions In Entrepreneurship Research Articles / Fatemeh Naderi Osat, Osat Fatemeh Naderi

Student Works (2010-2019)

The purpose of the present study is twofold. Firstly it seeks to find the generic structures that are inherent in the introduction sections of entrepreneurship research articles and secondly it investigates the role of experiential metafunction and its distribution in realization of obligatory generic elements that are found in the data. The approach applied is a combination of Halliday and Hasan’s (1989) model of genre analysis to find the generic structure potential (GSP) of the introduction sections as well as Halliday’s (1994) model of transitivity analysis to find the typicality of the process types and their contribution in the realization …
