Honor The King. Yes, But Emulate The King?, Michael E. Cafferky Feb 2012

Honor The King. Yes, But Emulate The King?, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

In seeking to discern God's will for their lives, top-echelon Christian leaders would do well to consider the biblical ideals embedded in the concept of kingship. The paper explores the biblical characteristics of the ideal king with the goal of identifying lessons for contemporary top-echelon leaders. It also reviews the connection between creation and kingship and the biblical concept of the Kingship of God, biblical guidance available in the selection, anointing and annual renewal of the king, and the duties and role of the king. It draws lessons regarding contemporary top-echelon Christian leaders in terms of personal traits, behaviors and …

The Ministry Of Service: A Critical Practico-Theological Examination Of The Ministry Of Presence And Its Reformulation For Military Chaplains, Mark Tinsley Feb 2012

The Ministry Of Service: A Critical Practico-Theological Examination Of The Ministry Of Presence And Its Reformulation For Military Chaplains, Mark Tinsley

Masters Theses

For centuries, the military chaplaincy has been guided by an applied ministry paradigm known succinctly as the ministry of presence. Although this model has served the chaplaincy well in many ways, it is not without its ideological, theological, biblical, and practical weaknesses. This work purposes to illuminate some of these weaknesses, while at the same time affirming the various strengths of presence ministry. In the end, however, this thesis will propose an alternate ministerial model for the military chaplaincy, namely, the ministry of service. Unlike its presence-ministry counterpart, the ministry of service will be shown to harmonize better with biblical …

Soli Deo Gloria: A Doxological Hermeneutic Of Mission In Emerging Ministries In The Evangelical Lutheran Church In America, Daniel R. Anderson

Doctor of Philosophy Theses

This research project is a grounded theory, ethnographic study of emerging ministries in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Twenty emerging ministries were selected from within the ELCA. Six of those sites were the subjects of indepth site visits by a research team. Eleven additional sites were the subjects of partial site visits and interviews. The data-gathering phase of the research concluded with a consultation with thirty emerging leaders held at Luther Seminary. Four sensitizing concepts were used as lenses in data gathering: Lutheran, emerging, missional, and doxological hermeneutics. Leadership in emerging ministries and emerging ministries as contextual and …

Life-Widening Mission: Global Perspectives From The Anglican Communion, Cathy Ross Jan 2012

Life-Widening Mission: Global Perspectives From The Anglican Communion, Cathy Ross

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

Each of the young Anglicans who write on the Five Marks of Mission were at the Edinburgh 2010 conference in June of that year. The articles were then reworked in Toronto a year later, so what you read here is the fruit of much labour, writing, and rewriting. These articles are also open and honest reflections from a range of young Anglicans in a variety of contexts. Here we see a glimpse of the strengths and struggles of the Anglican Communion. There is no space for complacency. The title of the book created much discussion. I still remember the excitement …

Reexamining The Place Of Public Confession Of Sins In A Reformed Context., Matthew John Webber Jan 2012

Reexamining The Place Of Public Confession Of Sins In A Reformed Context., Matthew John Webber

CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses

A dangerous tendency plagues the scripturally mandated practice of confession within many mainline Christian churches. The danger is that the theological thrust of the practice has been ignored or compromised in such a way that the manner in which confession is practiced ignores fundamental elements which underlie the need for confession, specifically public confession performed before one's fellow believers. It is especially evident that the confession of one's sins, which once took place in pubic before the ecclesial body, has seen a significant amount of change within the Reformed context. The focus of this essay is to identify the theological …

Teaching Disciples To Pray: Improving The Understanding And Practice Of Prayer At Calvary Baptist Church Of Floyd, Virginia, Randy Thomas Mcdaniel Jan 2012

Teaching Disciples To Pray: Improving The Understanding And Practice Of Prayer At Calvary Baptist Church Of Floyd, Virginia, Randy Thomas Mcdaniel

Doctor of Ministry Projects

This project was undergirded by a theory that intentionality and discipline in prayer will yield valuable benefits. Growing more knowledgeable in prayer practice as well as learning to faithfully set aside time for prayer were two components of specific importance in this project. Such components can be engaged by the individual in private study. However, the position of this ministry experiment is that the greatest gains regarding knowledge and practice with prayer are to be found from intentional study with the additional element of a dialogical small group experience.

God Is Missional, Evangelical Advocacy: A Response To Global Poverty Jan 2012

God Is Missional, Evangelical Advocacy: A Response To Global Poverty

Bibliographies

Understanding God as missional or Missio Dei is an important concept in exploring the function of the church and the importance of Christians to be mission-oriented. These resources can be used to teach master’s level classes or could be resources for churches to dig deeper in the area of missiology. Churches which are missional in nature are growing churches.

“Thou Knowest That I Believe” Invoking The Spirit Of The Lord As Council Witness In 1 Nephi 11, David Bokovoy Jan 2012

“Thou Knowest That I Believe” Invoking The Spirit Of The Lord As Council Witness In 1 Nephi 11, David Bokovoy

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

T he Book of Mormon features an esoteric exchange between the prophet Nephi and the Spirit of the Lord on an exceedingly high mountain. The following essay explores some of the ways in which an Israelite familiar with ancient religious experiences and scribal techniques might have interpreted this event. The analysis shows that Nephi’s conversation, as well as other simi lar accounts in the Book of Mormon, echoes an ancient temple motif. As part of this paradigm, the essay explores the manner in which the text depicts the Spirit of the Lord in a role associated with members of the …
