Understanding The Culture Of Ahiska Turks In Wheaton, Illinois: A Case Study, Omer Avci
Understanding The Culture Of Ahiska Turks In Wheaton, Illinois: A Case Study, Omer Avci
The Qualitative Report
This study focuses on the cultural characteristics of Ahiska Turks in Wheaton, Illinois in the United States. By trying to understand the culture of the participants, I sought to shed light on how the Ahiska Turks managed to cope with the hardship they experienced and yet preserved their ethnic identities. In this multicase study, I interviewed six male Ahiska Turks. As a result of my analyses, eight themes emerged: family, religion (i.e., Islam), language (i.e., Turkish), communal life, endogamy, authoritarianism, oppression against the preservation of culture and identity, and education for upward mobility. The Ahiska Turks’ agrarian way of life, …
The Phantom Of The Opera: Spectacular Musical Or Archetypal Story?, Patricia Drumright
The Phantom Of The Opera: Spectacular Musical Or Archetypal Story?, Patricia Drumright
Northeast Popular Culture Association
Although the story of The Phantom of the Opera originated about 100 years ago, today’s audiences are more likely to be familiar with—and even “phans” of—the musical adaptation by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which has become famous since its début in London in 1986. Considering that the theatrical version has received international acclaim and enjoys worldwide popularity—and considering that Gaston Leroux’s novel has merited scores of adaptations in the last century—surprisingly little scholarship exists on these various works. This exploratory essay addresses the popularity of The Phantom of the Opera (especially over the last 25 years) as well as its greater …

In The Shadow Of Service: Veteran Masculinity And Civil-Military Disjuncture In The United States, Steven Gardiner
In The Shadow Of Service: Veteran Masculinity And Civil-Military Disjuncture In The United States, Steven Gardiner
Northeast Popular Culture Association
In the period since the abolition of the draft the number of soldiers and veterans in the United States, in both absolute and relative terms, has declined. At the same time the United States has become increasingly militarized at home and dependent on the global projection of force. In this article I explore the impact of these apparently contradictory developments, focusing on the post-service lives of what I call mobilized veterans—those veterans actively involved with veterans’ organizations. In the context of such veterans’ organizations the consequences of militarization in a context of increased alienation of civilian life from the military …

The Effect Of Dietary Adaption On Cranial Morphological Integration In Capuchins (Order Primates, Genus Cebus), Jana Makedonska
The Effect Of Dietary Adaption On Cranial Morphological Integration In Capuchins (Order Primates, Genus Cebus), Jana Makedonska
Faculty and Staff Publications
A fundamental challenge of morphology is to identify the underlying evolutionary and developmental mechanisms leading to correlated phenotypic characters. Patterns and magnitudes of morphological integration and their association with environmental variables are essential for understanding the evolution of complex phenotypes, yet the nature of the relevant selective pressures remains poorly understood. In this study, the adaptive significance of morphological integration was evaluated through the association between feeding mechanics, ingestive behavior and craniofacial variation. Five capuchin species were examined, Cebus apella sensu stricto, Cebus libidinosus, Cebus nigritus, Cebus olivaceus and Cebus albifrons. Twenty three-dimensional landmarks were chosen to sample facial regions …

Predictors Of Business Return In New Orleans After Hurricane Katrina, Nina S.N. Lam, Helbert Arenas, Kelley Pace, James Lesage, Richard Campanella
Faculty Publications
We analyzed the business reopening process in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, which hit the region on August 29, 2005, to better understand what the major predictors were and how their impacts changed through time. A telephone survey of businesses in New Orleans was conducted in October 2007, 26 months after Hurricane Katrina. The data were analyzed using a modified spatial probit regression model to evaluate the importance of each predictor variable through time. The results suggest that the two most important reopening predictors throughout all time periods were the flood depth at the business location and business size as …

A Third Sector Imaginary, Roger A. Lohmann
A Third Sector Imaginary, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
A basic theoretical challenge for third sector scholars today is to speak in general and consistent terms about the institutional and normative orders forming outside households, markets and governments in numerous countries, regions and urban centers everywhere. The third sectors of the world have formed in light of a range of distinctive local conditions, including history, culture, law and other factors. A growing international group of scholars has produced a convincing, although limited and partial model of the third sector based in the linked concepts of nonprofit organization, nonprofit sector and non-distribution constraints. We will need to pay greater heed …
