Circumcision Or Mutilation - Voluntary Or Forced Excision - Extricating The Ethical And Legal Issues In Female Genital Ritual, Obiajulu Nnamuchi

Journal of Law and Health

This Article consists of seven sections. Following the introduction, Part II reconstructs the debate as to whether Female Genital Ritual is a legitimate cultural practice or a human rights violation, and it sets forth the major arguments. Part III delves into, and debunks, the moral relativist argument regarding FGR. Part IV seeks to determine whether FGM is evil. A foray into the theory of evil, the section draws critical distinctions between FC and FGM and explains why the distinctions are of paramount moral importance. Rustbelt Theater: Children's Environmental Justice Narratives From South Elyria, Oh, Lissette Lorenz Jan 2012

Rustbelt Theater: Children's Environmental Justice Narratives From South Elyria, Oh, Lissette Lorenz

Honors Papers

Children's knowledge of their eco-social environment is rarely privileged in environmental literature. Their voices help to broaden conceptions of environmental justice, to the benefit of both the environmental justice movement and the emerging discipline of environmental studies. In this community-based research project conducted in partnership with Save Our Children, an afterschool/summer enrichment center, in South Elyria, Ohio, third and fourth grade children utilized Theater of the Oppressed techniques to create an environmental justice narrative in the form of an original play. The goal of Theater of the Oppressed is for participants to dramatically analyze real-life oppressions/obstacles/challenges they face and act …

One Nation, Many Borders: Language And Identity In Mayan Guatemala And Mexico, Anna Caroline Peckham Jan 2012

One Nation, Many Borders: Language And Identity In Mayan Guatemala And Mexico, Anna Caroline Peckham

Honors Papers

This paper explores language ideologies, code choice, and ethnolinguistic identity in Maya-dominated areas of Mexico and Guatemala. As the Maya, or Pan-Maya, Movement has grown in scope and force since the 1980s, particularly in Guatemala, possessing a "Maya" identity has become defined in new ways. Since Mayan languages are still spoken with a strong degree of vitality in Mexico's Yucatan peninsula and the western highlands of Guatemala, examining Maya identity through beliefs about, and use of, indigenous languages and Spanish is a particularly useful focus. In comparing Maya peoples' beliefs and identities in each of these regions, this paper argues …

We Are Not These Bodies: Identity And Transcendence Among American Devotees Of Krishna, Rachel Lynn Williams Jan 2012

We Are Not These Bodies: Identity And Transcendence Among American Devotees Of Krishna, Rachel Lynn Williams

Honors Papers

This paper discusses the ways in which American devotees of Krishna understand their identities. Some second-generation Asian Americans have criticized American Krishna devotees of cultural appropriation, but devotees defend themselves against this claim with a philosophy of bodily transcendence. Many devotees practice transcendence through a rejection of nationalism and sectarianism. The paper also considers vegetarianism and ISKCON's attitude toward animals.

Female Truck Drivers: Negotiating Identity In A Male Dominated Environment, Stephanie Sicard Jan 2012

Female Truck Drivers: Negotiating Identity In A Male Dominated Environment, Stephanie Sicard

McNair Scholars Journal

This research explores how women negotiate their identities when working in the male dominated field of truck driving. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the over three million people who make their living as truck drivers, only six percent are female. By combining data gathered using various ethnographic research methodologies, several aspects related to women working in the truck driving industry were interpreted from the theoretical perspectives of performance theory and optimal diversification theory. A literature review revealed that little academic research has been published on the field of truck driving, and even less is written about …

The Friendly Yeti, Daniel S. Capper Jan 2012

The Friendly Yeti, Daniel S. Capper

Faculty Publications

Most images of yetis in Western popular culture and scholarly literature portray them as secular, predatory monsters. These representations overlook important religious dimensions of yetis that are hidden in the current literature, so I take a new look at yetis in Tibetan religions in order to clarify our understanding of these legendary creatures. Following a phenomenological approach that sets aside the issue of the ontological existence of yetis, I examine texts, art, ritual, and folklore in order to propose four yeti personal ideal types: the Buddhist practitioner, the human religious ally, the friendly yeti, and the mountain deity yeti. These …

Articulating Value Of Archaeological Resources After Damage, Archaeological Crime And The Archaeological Resources Protection Act, Liv Kristina Fetterman

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Archaeological crime is pervasive in the United States and throughout the world. While laws in the United States do not vest national ownership rights in archaeological resources, there are stringent means to enforce federal property rights in cultural resources that exist on federal lands under the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) as well as the Embezzlement and Theft, and Malicious Mischief federal statutes. In order to exercise these rights, federal land managers and archaeologists must know how to proceed upon detection of an archaeological violation. Specifically, there must be a thorough understanding of how to prepare an adequate archaeological damage …

Sedimentation Rate In Bera Lake And Soil Redistribution At Its Catchment Using Radioisotopes / Mohammadreza Gharibreza, Mohammadreza Gharibreza

Student Works (2010-2019)

The Bera Lake is a lacustrine system and the largest natural lake in Malaysia. Assessment of literature review has highlighted a clear gap in the evaluation of environmental impacts of anthropogenic activities on the soil and water resources and sedimentary regime. Accordingly, determination of soil and nutrient redistribution in the catchment area, and sedimentation rates, nutrients fate and sediment quality assessment at Bera Lake using fallout 210Pb and 137Cs radioisotopes and sediment quality guidelines have been defined as aims of the present research. A comprehensive methodology was formulated to perform an effective literature review, innovation of core sampler, field surveying, …

The central aim of this study is to identify the conversational topics of urban Malaysian preschoolers. A compact digital camera with video recording function was used to record the preschoolers’ reading time, activity time, drawing time, playtime and mealtime conversations on a first-hand basis for four consecutive days and on two separate occasions – September 2009 and March 2010. These conversations yielded 26 clips totalling …

Reading Comprehension Difficulties Among Middle Eastern Students / Ihab A. Abdulaziz, A. Abdulaziz Ihab Jan 2012

Reading Comprehension Difficulties Among Middle Eastern Students / Ihab A. Abdulaziz, A. Abdulaziz Ihab

Student Works (2010-2019)

Reading is a process that requires effort on the readers’ part if they want to understand what they are reading. A vast amount of research has been devoted to understand processes that contribute to reading comprehension. As part of that research, this study was conducted to explore problems or difficulties faced by 30 Middle Eastern students in the University of Malaya when they read texts in English and the reading strategies used by them. Based on the hypotheses that the students lack of ability to identify main ideas, infer information, deduce meaning from context, elicit specific information or details, guess …
