Just Places: Creating A Space For Place In Environmental Justice, Damayanti Banergee
Just Places: Creating A Space For Place In Environmental Justice, Damayanti Banergee
Societies Without Borders
This paper explores how discourses on sense of place and cultural heritage inform environmental justice conflicts. I argue that while economic distribution remains the overarching frame within environmental justice scholarship, cultural entitlement concerns are rarely discussed in the literature. I argue that environmental justice scholarship can draw upon place and cultural research to explore how cultural entitlement claims can be incorporated in environmental justice. I draw upon place literature to propose a three-dimensional typology of place. I call these three dimensions – political place, cultural place, and moral place. The proposed typology allows us to examine how discourses of place …

A Comparative Analysis Of Mexican-And Europe And European- Origin Immigration To The United States: Proposing An Interactive Colonization Theory, Manuel Barajas
Societies Without Borders
From the 1970s, Latin American immigration, mainly from Mexico, increased rapidly surpassing European migration in the 1980s for the first time in US history and now constituting over half of the total foreign-born population in the United States. In this paper, I compare this newer, Latin American wave of immigration to earlier, European waves and find that though a combination of push-pull and structural perspectives does much to explain the European experience, it fails to explain Mexican-origin migration and nature of incorporation. Therefore, I argue for an interactive colonization approach to understanding the uniqueness of the Mexicanorigin immigration experience.

Of Tools And Houses: Sociologists Without Borders And The Aaas Science And Human Rights Coalition, Bruce K. Friesen, Mark Frezzo, Brian K. Gran
Societies Without Borders
Sociologists Without Borders (SSF) has played a key role in the Science and Human Rights Coalition (SHRC) of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. This Coalition, which consists of nearly fifty scientific organizations, seeks to advance the human right to benefit from scientific progress and its application. This article critically evaluates SSF’s role in the SHRC. After providing background on the work, organization, and objectives of the Coalition, this article then elaborates on how sociologists, particularly representatives of the American Sociological Association and SSF, have collaborated with other scientists on various projects designed to implement this human right. …

Anthropological Data Regarding The Adaptiveness Of Hebephilia, Raymond B. Hames, Ray Blanchard
Anthropological Data Regarding The Adaptiveness Of Hebephilia, Raymond B. Hames, Ray Blanchard
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Hebephilia is the sexual attraction to early pubertal children in Tanner Stages 2 and 3, generally ages 11 through 14.
The second author of this letter (R.B.), a member of the Paraphilias Subworkgroup of the Work Group on Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders for DSM-5, proposed a diagnostic entity for DSM-5 that resembles the ICD-10 model, but with a different name: Pedohebephilic Disorder. In the original proposal (Blanchard, 2010a), this disorder would have three subtypes: pedophilic, hebephilic, and pedohebephilic. In the current version of the proposal, which is still under consideration, the name has been changed to Pedophilic Disorder, in …

Kinect And 3d Gis In Archaeology, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Fabio Remondino, Jim Robersson, Jennifer Von Schwerin, Giorgio Agugiaro, Gabrio Girardi
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
This paper explores the potential of using Microsoft's Kinect to create a low-cost and portable system to virtually navigate, through a prototype 3D GIS, the digitally reconstructed ancient Maya city and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Copan in Honduras. The 3D GIS, named QueryArch3D, was developed as part of the MayaArch3D project (http://mayaarch3d.unm.edu), which explores the possibilities of integrating databases and 3D digital tools for research and teaching on ancient architectures and landscapes. The developed system, based on the Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit (FAAST), controls in a remote and touchless mode the movements in the 3D environment in …
Binford, Lewis R., Alan J. Osborn
Binford, Lewis R., Alan J. Osborn
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Binford challenged anthropologists and archaeologists to expand the scope of their research, to develop more rigorous methodologies for data collection and analysis, and to think more critically. Science is a marathon without a finish line. Our understanding of past and present human behavior and cultural systems does not come easily. Social scientists can produce reliable knowledge by means of an iterative process that involves generating, testing, and refining (or rejecting) explanatory models. These models are, then, combined to construct scientific theories. The robust consequences of these theories are then continually scrutinized and evaluated. Binford continually made use of the complex …

The Individual And Collective Consequences Of Mass Incarceration In The African American Community, Deon Larue Mcqueen
The Individual And Collective Consequences Of Mass Incarceration In The African American Community, Deon Larue Mcqueen
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
While over time the terms of reference (e.g., Negro, Colored, Black, African American, Afrikan) have changed, the degraded cast status of Black people has been an immutable constant. For the purpose of this paper, African American and Black will be used interchangeably. No other minority ethnicity, has attempted to assimilate into White American culture more than African Americans. African Americans carry European names, speak the language (opposed to speaking native ancestors’ languages), and also share many of the same religious beliefs. Yet the stigmatization of blacks as an inferior race remains constant. Today the words African American and criminal are …
Innocent Until Proven Guilty: The Representation Of Wrongfully Convicted Women, Julie Krupa
Innocent Until Proven Guilty: The Representation Of Wrongfully Convicted Women, Julie Krupa
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The Innocence Project has exonerated only four women out of their first 250 cases. Even with the increase in media attention, wrongfully convicted women are still underrepresented among exonerees. An examination of the four cases of exonerated women with the help of the Innocence Project will be conducted. First, utilizing official documents including court filings and rulings, the study will identify commonalities and difference that led to a case being chosen by the Innocence Project. Characteristics to be considered are: the crime(s) they were convicted of, the duration of sentences and whether DNA testing was used to exonerate them, or …

Mission & Culture Publications
The research question of the study asked "In the post 2010 earthquake, what are the conditions faced by Haitian immigrants in accessing primary public education in the Dominican Republic"? Within the context of primary education, the study takes place in the town of Comendador, the capital of the Elías Piña province in the Dominican Republic. Using a mixed methods approach, incorporating ethnographic methods and database analysis, the study documents the voices of Haitian and Dominican parents, Dominican school personnel, non-governmental organization (NGO) officials and community stakeholders. Within the construct of access, there are six areas of focus: educational policy, curriculum …

Corporate Agendas And Ground-Realities: A Transnational Perspective On Indian Workers And Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr), Payal Banerjee, Kasturi Gupta
Sociology: Faculty Publications
This paper focuses on the complexities and contradictions within the practices of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arising as a result of CSR’s implementation within a neoliberal framework and, based on empirical observations, provides an assessment of the following: 1) critical overview of CSR initiatives on employees of large-scale manufacturing companies in India; and 2) an analysis of flexible hiring practices and the consequent marginalization of Indian immigrant information technology (IT) workers in the U.S. as a subcontracted workforce and their exclusion from CSR agendas despite their contributions to many CSR-member corporations. Both the IT and manufacturing sectors have been key …

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The Chariton Conglomerate is a quartz/limestone conglomerate of Middle Pennsylvanian age sparsely exposed in southern Iowa and northern Missouri. In Iowa it is characterized by quartz granules and rounded crinoid columnals. The objective of this study was to use detrital zircon ages to determine the provenance of the Chariton Conglomerate and possibly associated Marmaton Group sandstone beds. Detrital zircon ages were obtained for five conglomerate and two sandstone beds of the Chariton Conglomerate in Iowa, three conglomerate beds of the Chariton Conglomerate in Missouri, and two sandstone beds of the Marmaton Group in Iowa. According to the Kolmogorov-Smirnoff Test, the …
Debtor's Prison In The Neoliberal State: "Debtfare" And The Cultural Logics Of The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention And Consumer Protection Act Of 2005, Linda Coco
California Western Law Review
The enactment of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act ("BAPCPA") of 2005, amending the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978, marks a transformation in bankruptcy law and policy that is representative of larger shifts in dominant economic and political models from "embedded liberalism" to free market "neoliberalism." BAPCPA's provisions are part of the new practices of the emergent neoliberal state as they relate tot he American middle class segment of hte population. In disciplining hte middle class, BAPCPA shifts the risk and the responsibility of the lending relationship onto consumer debtors. BAPCPA does this by keeping financially distressed individuals …
Harlan's Ground Sloth (Paramylodon Harlant) (Xenarthra: Mylodontidae) From The Late Pleistocene (Rancholabrean) Of Iowa, H. Gregory Mcdonald
Harlan's Ground Sloth (Paramylodon Harlant) (Xenarthra: Mylodontidae) From The Late Pleistocene (Rancholabrean) Of Iowa, H. Gregory Mcdonald
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Harlan's ground sloth, Paramylodon harlani, is documented for the first time from Iowa. The record is based on a fifth metacarpal recovered from a gravel bar within West Tarkio Creek, Page County. While the specimen was not found in situ, and could not be radiocarbon dated, the local geology suggests that it was probably derived from sediments that post-date Peorian loess deposition and is late Wisconsinan in age. This specimen extends the range of Paramylodon 350 km ro the northeast of the closest previously known locality. Its size is slightly larger than average for other late Pleisrocene (Rancholabrean) …

Effects Of Berberine, Chelerythrine, And Sanguinarine On Proliferation In Four Human Immortalized Cell Lines, David S. Senchina, Nisarg B. Shah, Marc G. Busch
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis L., Papaveraceae) is a plant rich in benzophenanchridine (isoquinoline) alkaloids such as sanguinarine and chelerychrine. Both isolated alkaloids and whole-tissue rhizome extracts have demonstrated in vitro anticarcinogenic (antiproliferacive) activity in limited immortalized cell culture models, but the relative contribution of various alkaloid constituents to whole-tissue extract activity, and whether or not various alkaloids may act synergistically, has not been investigated. We challenged four immortalized cell lines (Jurkat, K562, Ramos, U937) with various doses of chelerythrine, sanguinarine, and berberine (a structurally and functionally similar alkaloid absent from bloodroot), alone and in all possible combinations, and measured proliferation …

Perspectives: Developing And Defining Both Science And Science Education As Disciplines, Robert E. Yager
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The six "domains" have been identified as features for the "doing" of science. These six are: Concept, Process, Creativity, Attitude, Application, and Worldview. They are offered to affect teaching, student learning, as well as a new way of defining science. Concepts and Processes often are the only two typically used to define school and college science content; Creativity and Positive Attitudes are added as two "enabling" domains; a fifth Domain is offered as a focus on the Application of typical concepts and process skills. It is the Domain where and how most people live and operate! The sixth Domain is …

Growing Gaps: Children's Experiences Of Inequality In A Faith-Based Afterschool Program In The U.S. South, Caroline Ellender Compretta
Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology
This ethnographic research examines the social service encounter between private providers and child recipients involved in a faith-based afterschool program located in a southern US city. I specifically focus on the tensions and divisions that developed between staff members and participating families in daily programmatic interactions and rhetoric. I highlight how race, class, and gender intersected with age to shape children’s different experiences of the afterschool program and their lives beyond the agency. I also show how these social categories converged in local stories of religious poverty relief, which build upon cultural narratives about American welfare, to blind staff to …

Gender And Culture In Psychology: Theories And Practices, E. Magnusson, Jeanne Marecek
Psychology Faculty Works
Gender and Culture in Psychology introduces new approaches to the psychological study of gender that bring together feminist psychology, socio-cultural psychology, discursive psychology and critical psychology. It presents research and theory that embed human action in social, cultural and interpersonal contexts. The book provides conceptual tools for thinking about gender, social categorization, human meaning-making, and culture. It also describes a family of interpretative research methods that focus on rich talk and everyday life. It provides a close-in view of how interpretative research proceeds. The latter part of the book showcases innovative projects that investigate topics of concern to feminist scholars …
Breaking The Cycle Of ‘Unequal Treatment’ With Health Care Reform: Acknowledging And Addressing The Continuation Of Racial Bias, Ruqaiijah Yearby
Breaking The Cycle Of ‘Unequal Treatment’ With Health Care Reform: Acknowledging And Addressing The Continuation Of Racial Bias, Ruqaiijah Yearby
Faculty Publications
Since the Civil War access to health care in the United States has been racially unequal. This racially unequal access to health care remains even after the passage of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ("Title VI") and the election of an African-American President. Both of these events held the promise of equality, yet the promise has never been fulfilled. Now, many hail the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act ("ACA") as the biggest governmental step in equalizing access to health care because it has the potential to increase minority access to health …
