It's A Birth Not A Procedure: An Ethnographic Study Of Intrauterine Fetal Death In A Labor And Delivery Unit Of An American Hospital Setting, Catherine Mcleod Griffin Jan 2012

It's A Birth Not A Procedure: An Ethnographic Study Of Intrauterine Fetal Death In A Labor And Delivery Unit Of An American Hospital Setting, Catherine Mcleod Griffin

Wayne State University Dissertations

Life transitions such as birth and death constitute a significant area within anthropological studies of ritual. It is important to investigate how individuals, groups, and communities organize around these events. Birth and death can be considered as rites of passage that mark key life transitions (van Gennep 1909/1960). Thus birth and death related rituals need to be investigated within the social and cultural context of American hospital settings to better understand the social organization of life, death, and personhood. In the American hospital setting, a reproductive loss at any gestational age receives the medical diagnostic label of an intrauterine fetal …

An Investigation Of Cultural Competence In Teachers, Leslie Allison Evola Jan 2012

An Investigation Of Cultural Competence In Teachers, Leslie Allison Evola

Wayne State University Dissertations

Using a set of scales to measure cultural competences which have been used in previous research, this study examined the relationships between Cultural Attitudes and Beliefs, Cultural Intelligence (CQ), and Ethnic Identity, as well as the Big Five personality traits and demographic variables, within a sample of 87 high school teachers. Cultural Attitudes and Beliefs predicted Metacognitive CQ, Cognitive CQ, Motivational CQ, and overall CQ above and beyond Openness. Teachers with ten years of experience or less were found to have higher CQ than teachers with more than ten years of experience, which may be attributed to age. Also, teachers …

Exploring Sacred Objects And Their Meanings In Catholic Mexicano Households: Domestic Religious Practices In San Antonio, Mary E. Durocher Jan 2012

Exploring Sacred Objects And Their Meanings In Catholic Mexicano Households: Domestic Religious Practices In San Antonio, Mary E. Durocher

Wayne State University Dissertations

Anthropological literature in the study of material culture argues that person/object interactions are important to the construction and maintenance of social relations and personal identity both in the present and through time. It is through relationships and interactions with things that people come to "know who they are" (Tilley (2007). This line of thinking has led some Latino studies scholars to propose that the retention of traditional aspects of culture, such as religious practices, often serves as a way of negotiating personal or cultural identity in an ever changing social milieu (Sandoval 2006, Aponte and De La Torre 2006). This …

Organizational Characteristics Of High- And Low-Clozapine-Utilization Clinics In The Veterans Health Administration, Jessica L. Gören, J. Rose, Ryann L. Engle, Eric G. Smith, Melissa Christopher, Nathaniel M. Rickles, Todd P. Selma, Megan B. Mccullough

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Objective: Treatment-resistance schizophrenia occurs in 20-30% of patients. Clozapine is the only medication proven effective for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. However, less than 25% of treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients receive clozapine in most settings. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify facilitators and barriers to clozapine use, to inform development of interventions to maximize appropriate clozapine-utilization.

Methods: Seventy semi-structured phone interviews were conducted with five high- and five low-utilization VA Medical Centers, from different US regions including urban and rural areas. Interviewees were key informants of clozapine processes, including mental health leadership, psychiatrists, clinical pharmacists and advanced practice nurses. Interviews were …

Zen Communication - A Cross Cultural Approach To Mindfulness, Appropriate Response, And Flow In Dyadic Interactions, Gregory Husak Jan 2012

Zen Communication - A Cross Cultural Approach To Mindfulness, Appropriate Response, And Flow In Dyadic Interactions, Gregory Husak

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This study examined the question of how the qualities that arise from the practice of traditionally East Asian disciplines such as Zen and related martial arts might be effectively applied to dyadic interactions. Long-form interviews of about 40 minutes each were conducted with academics who have studied these topics and with expert practitioners who have extensive direct experience. Most subjects had significant cross-cultural experience, having studied and/or practiced in both the U.S. and in Japan. Detailed analysis of transcripts of these recorded interviews indicated that, in particular, the seated Zen meditation practice known as zazen generates personally transformational qualities that …

The Spirit Of Contradiction In The Buddhist Doctrine Of Not-Self, Hugh Nicholson Jan 2012

The Spirit Of Contradiction In The Buddhist Doctrine Of Not-Self, Hugh Nicholson

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

An essay is presented discussing the various interpretations of the Theravāda Buddhist doctrine of "Not-self," or anattā. The author points out two contrasting manifestations of the teaching, including the "political-oppositional" form and the "spiritual-transformative" form. The relations between these paradigms are examined in depth through reference to works by Steven Collins, Richard Combrich, and Johannes Bronkhorst.

Forearm Orientation In Hadrosauridae (Dinosauria: Ornithopoda) And Implications For Museum Mounts, Phil Senter Jan 2012

Forearm Orientation In Hadrosauridae (Dinosauria: Ornithopoda) And Implications For Museum Mounts, Phil Senter

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Skeletons of hadrosaurids (“duck-billed dinosaurs”) are usually mounted with palms facing caudally (posteriorly). To achieve this, the radius is articulated with the medial (ulnar) condyle of the humerus instead of the lateral (radial) condyle, which would be unique among vertebrates if it were correct. However, articulated specimens reveal that in hadrosaurids the radius articulates with the lateral condyle of the humerus, as in other vertebrates, and the palms face caudomedially, though more medially than caudally. Active pronation is prevented by the shapes of the radial and ulnar shafts and by the lack of rolling articulations between radius and ulna. This …

Writing With An English As A Second Language (Esl) Student, Sara Mulcahy Jan 2012

Writing With An English As A Second Language (Esl) Student, Sara Mulcahy

Undergraduate Review

This paper explores the pedagogies and practices of teaching writing to English-as-a-second-language (ESL) students. With growing numbers of ESL students entering colleges and universities, it is important to be aware of the challenges facing ESL students. Equally important is awareness of what methodologies and practices work best when assisting ESL students with their writing. This paper serves as a final report for a service learning project that consisted of one-on-one workshops with a Japanese ESL student. This final report draws on various secondary sources and primary research in order to explore the writing development of this particular ESL student. It …

Dying For The Nation: Rite Of Passage, Homoeroticism And Martyrdom In The Falangist Narrative During The Spanish Civil War, Iker González-Allende Jan 2012

Dying For The Nation: Rite Of Passage, Homoeroticism And Martyrdom In The Falangist Narrative During The Spanish Civil War, Iker González-Allende

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

Eugenio o proclamación de la Primavera (1938) by Rafael García Serrano, and Unificación (1937) by Jacinto Miquelarena are two propagandistic works in which the male protagonists most fully embody the core values of Falangist masculinity. The glorification of youth appears clearly in the two texts, along with an emphasis on violence. War becomes the rite of passage for the two male protagonists, who also renounce romantic relationships to devote themselves to the nation. The two main characters find in their fellow comrades a substitute for their families; in this sense, the nation is constructed as a masculine project. The presence …

Technology, Mining Methods And Landscapes Of A Placer Mining District In Fairbanks, Alaska, 1900-1930, John P. Baeten Jan 2012

Technology, Mining Methods And Landscapes Of A Placer Mining District In Fairbanks, Alaska, 1900-1930, John P. Baeten

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Placer miners in Alaska’s interior were part of the last great gold rush in North America. As word of gold in the Fairbanks Mining District traveled down the Yukon River, a wave of miners from the Klondike placer fields in Dawson, along with a assortment of speculators and inexperienced green horns from the Lower 48 converged on the confluence of the Tanana and Chena rivers hoping to strike it rich. The steamers coming from Dawson were integral; they carried miners with experience working the frozen subarctic placer deposits of the Klondike. These miners encountered new environmental challenges that required the …

Engaging The Humanities To Address Wildland Fire Issues, Fred Swanson, Nathaniel Brodie, Charles Goodrich Jan 2012

Engaging The Humanities To Address Wildland Fire Issues, Fred Swanson, Nathaniel Brodie, Charles Goodrich

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

This project examined existing programs and potential options for collaborations among the humanities, art, science, land management, and public concerning wildfire and wildfire policy and education. These programs and partnerships include creative residencies; conferences, workshops, and symposia; art-science collaborative field studies; and community programs and partnerships. We also reviewed how popular literature frames, reflects and has affected our cultural understanding of wildfire. Our analysis concludes that, compared to the richness of the subject of wildfire, compared to the way wildfire encapsulates all the complexities and controversies of culture, history, and ecology, wildfire’s potential as a literary subject remains largely unfulfilled. …

Identity And Christ: The Ecclesiological And Soteriological Implications Of Raimon Panikkar's Cosmotheandric Theology, Michael Martocchio Jan 2012

Identity And Christ: The Ecclesiological And Soteriological Implications Of Raimon Panikkar's Cosmotheandric Theology, Michael Martocchio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the most influential figures in recent theological reflection upon interreligious dialogue is Raimon Panikkar. Panikkar was an ordained Catholic priest who also practiced the Hindu and Buddhist faiths. Panikkar lived a life of mystical faith in which his identity was simultaneously Christian, Hindu, and Buddhist, a phenomenon often called `multiple belonging'. However, this mystical unity is not merely an element of Panikkar's faith life, but it also essential to his theology. In fact, it is mystical unity that underlies the very concept of identity in Panikkar's thought. Identity is found through union. It is in the realization of …

Two Aspects Of Models And Cultural Role Of Scientific Model, Mohd Hazim Shah Abdul Murad Jan 2012

Two Aspects Of Models And Cultural Role Of Scientific Model, Mohd Hazim Shah Abdul Murad

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In this paper I will look at the two aspects of models which I call the ‘symbolic’ and the ‘functional’. A comparison is made in this regard between models considered as Kuhnian paradigms, and Durkheim’s theory of social cohesion through collective representation. I argue that models serve a similar function with respect to the scientific community. However, this does not imply that practice is independent of belief. What I suggest instead is that practice is reconciled or negotiated with belief. Thus practice in a sense, does not tell us the whole story.

College Course Curriculum And Global Citizenship, Stephen Reysen, Loretta W. Larey, Iva Katzarska-Miller Jan 2012

College Course Curriculum And Global Citizenship, Stephen Reysen, Loretta W. Larey, Iva Katzarska-Miller

Faculty Publications

This article examines the influence of participation in a college course infused with global citizen-related curriculum on antecedents, identification, and outcomes of global citizenship. Students completed measures regarding global citizenship at the beginning and end of a college semester. Global-infused curriculum was operationalised as the number of words related to global citizenship contained in course syllabi. While controlling for student ratings at the beginning of the semester and measurement error, global infused curriculum predicted students’ global awareness at the end of the semester. Global awareness predicted students’ identification with global citizens, and global citizenship identification predicted endorsement of prosocial values. …

Supporting Developer-Onboarding With Enhanced Resource Finding And Visual Exploration, Jianguo Wang Jan 2012

Supporting Developer-Onboarding With Enhanced Resource Finding And Visual Exploration, Jianguo Wang

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Understanding the basic structure of a code base and a development team are essential to get new developers up to speed in a software development project. Developers do so through the process of early experimentation with code and the creation of mental models of technical and social structures in a project. However, getting up-to-speed in a new project can be challenging due to difficulties in: finding the right place to begin explorations, expanding the focus to determine relevant resources for tasks, and identifying dependencies across project elements to gain a high-level overview of project structures. In this thesis, I first …

Jesus The Gardener: A Revised Perspective Of A Favourite New Testament Scene, James Cregan Jan 2012

Jesus The Gardener: A Revised Perspective Of A Favourite New Testament Scene, James Cregan

Theology Conference Papers

Mary Magdalene’s encounter with the risen Christ in the garden in which he was entombed, described in John 20:14-15, is one of the most poignant in the entire Bible. If we are to accept the interpretation of some commentaries, Mary, when she finds the tomb empty, in her grief induced confusion[1] fails to recognise Jesus when he appears to her, supposing him to be the gardener. Her fear is that the same people who have killed him have removed his body. It is only when Jesus calls to her by name that there ensues what has been described as …

Consuming The Aesthetic Of The Everyday: A Visual Analysis Of Errol Morris’ “High Life”, HéLèNe De Burgh-Woodman, C Payne

Business Conference Papers

Co-constructed meaning between marketer and consumer is a key dimension of convergent (Jenkins 2006) media. Using “Miller’s High Life” ads (1999-2005) we discuss how content convergence prompts different co-constructed meanings among consumer segments, how “mundane art” is produced and how the marketer/consumer relationship is transformed into a filmmaker/viewer-consumer one. From an interdisciplinary perspective, we discuss the implications of this transformed relationship for marketing.

Egypt At A Crossroads: An Analysis Of Morsi's Strategies Of Military Control In The Post-Revolutionary State, Emma H. Macfarlane Jan 2012

Egypt At A Crossroads: An Analysis Of Morsi's Strategies Of Military Control In The Post-Revolutionary State, Emma H. Macfarlane

CMC Senior Theses

Following Tunisia, Egypt was the second Arab nation to engage in the Arab Spring, as massive civil uprisings in protest of its former repressive dictator Hosni Mubarak succeeded in toppling his regime after thirty years of rule. After seventeen months of military rule in the period following Mubarak’s fall, Mohamed Morsi, a member of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, was elected the fifth president of Egypt. Morsi is Egypt’s first civilian president. Ever since the Free Officers Revolution of 1952, Egypt has been ruled by a succession of military leaders, including Gamal Abdel Nasser, Anwar Sadat, and Hosni Mubarak. Consequently, political and …

The Impact Of New Media On Intercultural Communication In Global Context, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2012

The Impact Of New Media On Intercultural Communication In Global Context, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The rapid development of new media has been the main force accelerating the trend of globalization in human society in recent decades. New media has brought human interaction and society to a highly interconnected and complex level, but at the same time challenges the very existence of intercultural communication in its traditional sense. It is under this circumstance that we see more and more scholars becoming involved in the investigation of the relationship between new media and intercultural communication. Emerging topical areas in this line of research mainly include three categories: (1) the impact of national/ethnic culture on the development …
