What Effect Does Information Technology Have On The Elderly And Their Family (S), Tom Allen Harrell

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this study is to find definitive changes within the dynamics of friendships and families in relation to the questions of information and communication technology (ICT) use and how it affects social capital of the elderly and their families and friends. What is now considered ordinary operations such as dialing, texting, photographing, gaming, email and voice mail, downloading, etc., is not viewed as ordinary forms of communication by some people and particularly, not by portions of the elderly population.

Thunder Rock: The Play, And Enriching The High School Curriculum, Jason William Bayless Jan 2012

Thunder Rock: The Play, And Enriching The High School Curriculum, Jason William Bayless

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis is a position paper developing an argument for the advancement of the play Thunder Rock, by Robert Ardrey, into consideration for the California Reading List for Public High Schools. To support the validity of the argument the thesis explores three key elements: the content of the play itself; connections to the California Content Standards for California Public Schools; as well as related instructional methods appropriate to the task of teaching the play. The goal is to develop in this thesis not only an argument for the inclusion of Thunder Rock into the California Reading List, but also create …

The Rock Art Of The Blood Of The Ancestors Grotto (11sa557): The Archaeology Of Religious Theater, Lenville J. Stelle Jan 2012

The Rock Art Of The Blood Of The Ancestors Grotto (11sa557): The Archaeology Of Religious Theater, Lenville J. Stelle

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

11SA557 is a pictographic rock art site in the Hill Section of southern Illinois. To date, 33 icons, both simple and complex, have been identified. The distinctive biophysical qualities of the site have compelled an interpretation that it was in some fundamental sense “female.” Ethnohistorical and ethnographic explorations inform a treatment of 11SA557 as a religious theater where female puberty ceremonies of the Dhegiha Sioux were performed. Exploitation likely dates to the Protohistoric period. Twenty-one elements of religious theater are explored archaeologically and ethnographically. The application of the heuristic model of religious theater afforded a measureable enhancement of the understanding …

The Norquest Family: A Porción Of Edinburg, University Of Texas--Pan American. Community Historical Archaeology Project With Schools Program (Chaps), Margaret E. Dorsey, Sandra Hernandez-Salinas, Maria Barrera, Roseann Bacha-Garza

Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS) Publications

The Norquest family immigrated to their farm site in 1925 as part of a larger wave of Midwestern immigrants to the Lower Rio Grande Valley. At the turn of the twentieth century, the Valley also experienced an influx of Mexican migrants in search of opportunity and work. They joined their Mexican-American counterparts laboring as agricultural workers on the farms of Anglos and Texas-Mexicans. Some of these individuals found their way onto the Norquest farm site. This multidisciplinary report posits a nuanced way of looking at human-land interaction on a farmsite in South Texas, where racial and class conflict existed, but …

A Structural Guide To In-Depth Interviewing In Business And Industrial Marketing Research, Elad Granot, Thomas Brashear Alejandro, Paulo Cesar Motta

Business Faculty Publications

Purpose – The authors aim to present a structural guide for data collection in a participant-oriented, B2B context. Design/methodology/approach – A three-stage interview process following the work of Seidman is presented, along with key issues on how to plan, structure, and execute a B2B interview-based hermenuetic ethnographic study. Research limitations/implications – The framework presented in this paper provides strong theoretical foundation for further theory development in global industrial marketing research and managerial cognition research. However, given the conceptual nature of the research, empirical scrutiny and further conceptual and empirical research are required. Originality/value – There is a serious gap in …

International Intellectual Property Scholars Series: Intellectual Property And Asian Values, Peter K. Yu, Peter K. Yu Jan 2012

International Intellectual Property Scholars Series: Intellectual Property And Asian Values, Peter K. Yu, Peter K. Yu

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

From Niall Ferguson to Fareed Zakaria, commentators have paid growing attention to the rise of Asia and its implications for the West. Recent years have also seen the emergence of a growing volume of literature on intellectual property developments in Asia, in particular China and India. Few commentators, however, have explored whether Asian countries will take unified positions on international intellectual property law and policy.

Commissioned for the Inaugural International Intellectual Property Scholars Series, this article fills the void by examining intellectual property developments in relation to the decades-old 'Asian values' debate. Drawing on the region's diversity in economic and …

A Genealogical Review Of The Worldview Concept And Framework In Africana Studies-Related Theory And Research, Karanja Keita Carroll Jan 2012

A Genealogical Review Of The Worldview Concept And Framework In Africana Studies-Related Theory And Research, Karanja Keita Carroll

Publications and Research

Daudi Ajani Ya Azibo's "Articulating the Distinction between Black Studies and the Study of Blacks: The Fundamental Role of Culture and the African-Centered Worldview" originally published in the Afrocentric Scholar and republished in both editions of Nathaniel Norment Jr.'s African American Studies Reader, provides much needed clarity on the philosophical foundations of Black Studies. However, Azibo's work is connected to an earlier project, Syed M. Khatib's (aka Cedric X. Clark) "Black Studies or the Study of Black People: Reflections on the Distinctive Characteristics of Black Psychology." Both Azibo and Khatib ask an important question related to the philosophical foundations of …

Through The Eyes Of Visitors: Understanding The Contexts Of The Visitor Photo Study At The Denver Museum Of Nature & Science, Kathryn Irene Schroeder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This case study describes the analysis of the Visitor Photo Study, a study in which visitors to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science documented their visit through pictures. The origins, implementation, and findings of the Visitor Photo Study are considered within the contexts of the fields of Community-Based Research (Strand, Marullo, Cutforth, Stoecker, & Donohue, 2003b), Visual Studies (Marshall & Rossman, 2011; Pink, 2007), and Visitor Studies (Visitor Studies Association, 2012). This study considers the extent to which the principles and elements of each of these fields were present in the Visitor Photo Study, which elements were not fully …

School Readiness For Young Migrant Children: The Challenge And The Outlook, Smita Mathur Jan 2012

School Readiness For Young Migrant Children: The Challenge And The Outlook, Smita Mathur

Selected Works

There is evidence that children from families of migrant workers are among the most disadvantaged in term of early academic achievement. Yet there are insufficient resources allocated to research exploring the reasons that existing preschool programs are not effective in closing the gap between migrant children and other groups of children in the USA. There are some Head Start programs that migrant children have access to, but many of them offer simply care-giving functions and offer little opportunities for enrichment activities for children in preschool. This paper explores some of the barriers to engaging the preschool child effectively in educational …

A State-Based National Network For Effective Wildlife Conservation, Dale Goble Jan 2012

A State-Based National Network For Effective Wildlife Conservation, Dale Goble

Articles

State wildlife conservation programs provide a strong foundation for biodiversity conservation in the United States, building on state wildlife action plans. However, states may miss the species that are at the most risk at rangewide scales, and threats such as novel diseases and climate change increasingly act at regional and national levels. Regional collaborations among states and their partners have had impressive successes, and several federal programs now incorporate state priorities. However, regional collaborations are uneven across the country, and no national counterpart exists to support efforts at that scale. A national conservation-support program could fill this gap and could …

Public Values And Perceptions Of Industrial Heritage In The Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, Natiffany R. Mathews Jan 2012

Public Values And Perceptions Of Industrial Heritage In The Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, Natiffany R. Mathews

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The purpose of this research is to assess public values and perceptions concerning industrial heritage in the Keweenaw by studying visitors at an endangered mining site tour. This research presents and analyzes feedback collected directly from participants in the Cliff Mine (Michigan) archaeological field school public tour surveys in June 2011, gathers semi-structured interview data from survey participants and local experts, and synthesizes and collates both survey and interview data. As those who study heritage site visitors have found, in all outreach there is a necessity for deeper understanding of visitors for the outreach to be effective. An appropriate metric …

Why Anthropology Of Childhood? A Short History Of An Emerging Discipline, David F. Lancy Jan 2012

Why Anthropology Of Childhood? A Short History Of An Emerging Discipline, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The paper has four goals: to refute the claim that anthropologists have not studied childhood; to provide a cursory history of the field; to provide an organizational schema for reviewing the literature in the field and; to suggest a strategy for future scholarship in the anthropology of childhood.
