U.S. Military Engagement With Authoritarian East/Central African States, Shawn P. Russell
U.S. Military Engagement With Authoritarian East/Central African States, Shawn P. Russell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the question, "How can the US best engage authoritarian governments in Africa militarily, in order to facilitate more positive outcomes for that country's citizens?" In order to answer this, it is necessary to examine the presumption that authoritarian governments do not promote positive outcomes for their constituents. If this is not the case, then it may be possible to use different, non-traditional means in order to identify positive performance indicators. This can lead to a more holistic assessment, and allow the US to leverage the resources of the military to further promote these outcomes.

The Physics Of School Culture: Unleashing Student Voice In The Quest For School Improvement, Henry Elizarraraz Yzaguirre
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this ethnographic study is to examine the lived experiences of students attending a predominately Latino urban high school in the southwest region of the United States, using interviews, focus groups, and observations to gain an insight on student engagement and disengagement from school. Riverview High School was selected as the prime site for exploring student engagement based mainly on the poor student population of color, low school retention rate, and high suspension rate. Three focus groups were identified of about 6 students each for a total of eighteen 11th grade students. Each focus group was digitally recorded …

Defying Victimhood: Women And Post-Conflict Peacebuilding, Albrecht Schnabel, Anara Tabyshalieva
History Faculty Research
The chapters in this volume cover a wide range of women’s post-conflict peacebuilding experiences in different parts of the world. Post-conflict situations are windows of opportunity during which gender relations can and should be rethought and which, if properly utilized, can serve as the right moment to “rewrite” the rules and practices that previously served as obstacles to the participation of women in society. Overall, our book is meant to challenge the popular and often-propagated assumption that women should be supported, empowered and given a voice merely in their roles as victims. Collectively, we provide evidence in support of the …

Neocolonialism And The Global Prison In National Geographic's Locked Up Abroad, Casey R. Kelly
Neocolonialism And The Global Prison In National Geographic's Locked Up Abroad, Casey R. Kelly
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
This essay examines the reformulation of colonial ideologies in National Geographic Channel's Locked Up Abroad, a documentary program that chronicles the narratives of Westerner travelers incarcerated in foreign nations. An analysis of Locked Up Abroad evinces neocolonialism in contemporary media culture, including: the historic association between dark-skin and savagery, the backwardness of the non-Western world, and the Western imperative to civilize it. The program's documentary techniques and framing devises sustain an Otherizing gaze toward non-Western societies, and its portrayals elide a critical analysis of colonialism in its present forms. I advocate for neocolonial criticism to trace how NatGeo remains haunted …

Shared Spaces, Separate Lives: Community Formation In The California Citrus Industry During The Great Depression, David Gregory Shanta
Theses Digitization Project
The California citrus industry was the engine for the economic and cultural development of twentieth century Southern California. This thesis aims to contribute to the literature by focusing where possible, on the experiences of the small landholding "ranchers," who collectively held the power of the large landholders, and on the experiences of Mexican workers, who despite marginalization, pooled their economic and social resources, and persisted in place.

The Tradition Of Anonymity In The Andes, Martín L. Gaspar
The Tradition Of Anonymity In The Andes, Martín L. Gaspar
Spanish Faculty Research and Scholarship
This essay examines the longstanding lettered tradition of representing the Andean native as anonymous, and what I view as a potential challenge to this tradition in Claudia Llosa'sLlosa, Claudia. 2006. Madeinusa, Madrid: Universal Pictures, Oberón Cinematográfica. [Google Scholar] film Madeinusa (2006). By following the gaze of the native as a common thread, I trace a genealogy of the figure of the anonymous native in Peruvian letters since the early twentieth century. Early essays and paintings of the native, I claim, display a basic politics of anonymity, while fictional works explore the narrative implications of and alternatives to …

Do You Feel Left Out Of Your Family?: An Examination Of Family Communication Patterns And Ostracism, Anna F. Carmon, Joan R. Poulsen
Do You Feel Left Out Of Your Family?: An Examination Of Family Communication Patterns And Ostracism, Anna F. Carmon, Joan R. Poulsen
Iowa Journal of Communication
Familial bonds have the potential to satisfy our need for human relationships, but they are also likely to cause us to be both victims and sources of ostracism. Feelings of ostracism likely stem from communicative experiences and may extend to perceptions of family satisfaction. It would seem ostracism mediates the relationship between family communication patterns and family satisfaction. Although the current study did not confirm the proposed model of ostracism, an alternative model is discussed. Further, individuals who are married and have children perceive less ostracism in their families than individuals who are in single and do not have children.

Right To Information Identity, 29 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 539 (2012), Elad Oreg
UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law
Inspired by the famous Warren and Brandeis conceptualization of the “right to privacy,” this article tries to answer a modern, conceptual lacuna and presents the argument for the need to conceptualize and recognize a new, independent legal principle of a “right to information identity.” This is the right of an individual to the functionality of the information platforms that enable others to identify and know him and to remember who and what he is. Changes in technology and social standards make the very notion of identity increasingly fluid, transforming the way it is treated and opening new and fascinating ways …
Beyond Tolerations And Accomodation: Amicable Religious Coexistence In The Late Medieval Balkans, Marianne Kupin
Beyond Tolerations And Accomodation: Amicable Religious Coexistence In The Late Medieval Balkans, Marianne Kupin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The common image that is associated with the religious atmosphere of the Middle Ages is paradoxical. On the one hand there is an aura of fervent religious piety, which also fueled religious animosity, most notably in the bloodshed and brutality of the Crusades. This overwhelming conflict makes it hard for anyone to imagine the Middle Ages as an ear in which there could have been cordial or harmonious religious coexistence of any kind. This must be considered. In the Balkans during the Late Medieval/ Early Ottoman Period, there existed a form of religious coexistence unlike anything else in Europe. Amicable …

Dirt Theory And Material Ecocriticism, Heather I. Sullivan
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
This essay speaks for dirty aesthetics. Although aesthetic landscapes readily inspire environmental thinking, a case can be made for grappling with the truly local dirty matter right at hand. Dirt, soil, earth, and dust surround us at all scales: we find them on our shoes, bodies, and computer screens, in fields and forests, and floating in the air. They are the stuff of geological structures, of the rocky Earth itself, and are mobile like our bodies.
