This article uses story as a process to highlight the work in a South Texas community that focuses on the education of youth and the development of community. The work is guided by a new consciousness of place, community engagement, and identity formation. The work is local, but breaking the isolation of youth, families, and ideas has been part of an emerging theory of change. The document takes us in and out of stories of place in an attempt to transfer the work to other communities. It presents the voices of witnesses to take the concepts used in this Mexican-American …

In Vitro Complex, Anna Druzcz Feb 2012

In Vitro Complex, Anna Druzcz

Theses

Contemporary technological developments allow for greater manipulation of the natural world than ever before. While the increasing variety of synthetic materials, techniques, and equipment employed in horticulture and urban development are reshaping the land, sophisticated digital imaging tools, ranging from computer-generated graphics to 3D modeling and rendering software, are changing the way we design and represent landscapes. Through technology, we are continually imitating, reconstructing, and perfecting the natural environment. As a result, the physical and conceptual borders between the organic and synthetic elements, the "born" and the "made," in our physical environments are becoming progressively obscured, as are the lines …

The Relational Worlds Of A Child With A Significant Disability, Clare K. Stott Feb 2012

The Relational Worlds Of A Child With A Significant Disability, Clare K. Stott

Special Education ETDs

This dissertation explores the relational worlds of a single child with a significant disability. Previous research on relationships for individuals with significant disabilities has heavily relied on the perceptions of and information from others, rather than the individual with a disability him or herself. This research is an ethnographic exploration of a single child with a disability, Julia, and the dynamic ecosystem of her relational worlds. The affect and behaviors of this child were explored in the school setting. The findings revealed that friendships' were present for Julia, and that they resulted in expressions of enjoyment and happiness. These friendships, …

Gender Differences In Reasons For Alcohol And Drug Abuse Among Youth In Kenya: Programs For Prevention, Faith Wanjiru Kimunya Feb 2012

Gender Differences In Reasons For Alcohol And Drug Abuse Among Youth In Kenya: Programs For Prevention, Faith Wanjiru Kimunya

Theses and Dissertations

Much of the research on alcohol and drug abuse prevention examines general risk and protective factors without considering gender and is conducted primarily in Western cultural contexts. However, gender and culture are important to consider in the design and implementation of alcohol and drug abuse prevention programs because both gender and culture can play a role in the development of risk and protective factors. In order to assess the role that gender and culture might play in alcohol and drug abuse, a literature review was conducted. The literature review focused on the gender differences in reasons for alcohol and drug …

Correlating The Nevius Method With Church Planting Movements: Early Korean Revivals As A Case Study, Wesley L. Handy Feb 2012

Correlating The Nevius Method With Church Planting Movements: Early Korean Revivals As A Case Study, Wesley L. Handy

Liberty Theological Review

John Nevius served as a missionary to China in the late nineteenth-century. From his field experience, Nevius argued for radical changes in missionary methodology. His greatest influence may have been on the mission to Korea beginning in the 1890s. David Garrison, currently serving in South Asia, served for several years in influential administrative roles within the International (formerly Foreign) Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He studied and advocated Church Planting Movements [CPM], necessitating a change in contemporary missionary methodology. Both men have made major contributions to the practice of missions. This article endeavors to show the similarities between …

Perichoresis In Gregory Nazianzen And Maximus The Confessor, Brian T. Scalise Feb 2012

Perichoresis In Gregory Nazianzen And Maximus The Confessor, Brian T. Scalise

Liberty Theological Review

The doctrine of perichoresis applied to Trinity is the mutual coinherence or interpentration of the Persons of the Godhead. Applied to Christology, perichoreo is, first, the reciprocal passing of characteristics and titles between the divine and human natures hypostatically united in Yeshua. Secondly, it also describes the distinct but intimate union between Christ's natures. Historically, the Trinitarian use of perichoresis grew out of the christological use of perichoreo first developed by Gregory Nazianzen (A.D. 4th century) and then, subsuquently, explained by Maximus the Confessor (A.D 7th century). Maximus, often directly commenting on Gregory's use of perichoreo, seeks to expound …

Media Darlings: The Egyptian Revolution And American Media Coverage, Rebecca Fox Feb 2012

Media Darlings: The Egyptian Revolution And American Media Coverage, Rebecca Fox

Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the first few months of 2011, a handful of protesters dominated mainstream American media coverage of the Egyptian Revolution. Activists such as Wael Ghonim and Gigi Ibrahim were called â the Facebook youthâ and â digital revolutionariesâ . This thesis explores various characteristics of these â media darlingsâ and the ways in which their messages were portrayed in American media outlets. Why did so many news outlets focus on these individuals? This research first establishes a quantitative argument that shows reporters focused on young, tech-savvy, and westernized individuals. Then, through case studies and the application of Bourdieuâ s field …

Thank You, Merci, Shukran! Private Education And Language In Egypt, Ericka Galegher Feb 2012

Thank You, Merci, Shukran! Private Education And Language In Egypt, Ericka Galegher

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis examines the processes by which the reproduction of power and social hierarchies transpire in the field of international, private schools in Egypt. More specifically, I will analyze how the linguistic system in these schools reproduce and reinforce forms of power and inequality. I will consider the process by which nonnative languages, principally English, became the dominant and legitimate linguistic system of these schools, and how the complexities of their habitus have influenced students' language beliefs and practices. Language is a place for ideological contestation and identity assertion reinforcing power relations between groups and individuals. Differences in accent, grammar, …

Divided, They Win? A Case Study Of The New Political Generation In Egypt Since 25th January 2011, Sanaa El-Banna

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the political culture of the new political generation in Egypt after 25th January 2011. It aims at examining the reasons behind generational conflicts on the new political landscape. It defines political generation as â a group of people who have been subject to common social and political (â ¦) influences and circumstances' that shape their political values, attitudes, and signify their sharing of an essential destiny' . Hence, generations are defined in terms of political culture, rather than age groups. The study examines six suggestive cases: The National Movement for Changeâ Kefayaâ , the 6th of April, …

Youth And The 25th Revolution In Egypt: Agents Of Change And Its Multiple Meanings, Dina El Sharnouby Feb 2012

Youth And The 25th Revolution In Egypt: Agents Of Change And Its Multiple Meanings, Dina El Sharnouby

Theses and Dissertations

The 25th of January 2011 marks an important date for Egypt and the world. Not only did former President Hosni Mubarak who has ruled Egypt for 30 years step down, but the youth who were once conceived as incapable of change were hailed as those who brought about this transformation. Yet how could the youth organize and bring about such a change that was not only unthinkable for many, but not one who took to the streets on the 25th imagined they could topple Hosni Mubarak in 18 short days. In this thesis I thus ask: 1) how have youth …

Molding And Moving Bodies In A Neoliberal World: African Football Labor Migrants In Egypt, Andrea Groves Feb 2012

Molding And Moving Bodies In A Neoliberal World: African Football Labor Migrants In Egypt, Andrea Groves

Theses and Dissertations

Egypt has a large profitable football industry that increasingly attracts the attention of both football agents wanting to earn income from another market and sub-Saharan football players hoping to further a career by using Egypt as an intermediary between their home countries and Europe. The labor migration of sub-Saharan football players to Egypt has been enabled mainly by neoliberal, market-orientated changes adopted by FIFA, the CAF, the European Union, and the Egyptian football industry itself. Yet more importantly it is the individual actors that implement and take advantage of these hegemonic spheres of influence. This thesis explores how these individual …

Categorical Confusion? The Strategic Implications Of Recognizing Challenges Either As Irregular Or Traditional, Colin S. Gray Dr. Feb 2012

Categorical Confusion? The Strategic Implications Of Recognizing Challenges Either As Irregular Or Traditional, Colin S. Gray Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Strategic theory should educate to enable effective strategic practice, but much of contemporary theory promotes confusion, not clarity, of suitable understanding. A little strategic theory goes a long way, at least it does if it is austere and focused on essentials. Unfortunately, contemporary strategic conceptualization in the U.S. defense community is prolix, over-elaborate, and it confuses rather than clarifies. Recent debate about irregular, as contrasted allegedly with traditional, challenges to U.S. national security have done more harm than good. Conceptualization of and for an operational level of war can imperil the truly vital nexus between strategy and tactics. In much …

Word And Place In Irish Typography, Brian Dixon Feb 2012

Word And Place In Irish Typography, Brian Dixon

Articles

Toponomic typography, or place-name typography, is not, in any sense a formal discipline. It is, however, common for typographers to find themselves setting the names of locations and settlements within a diverse range of projects. Wayfinding solutions, public transport information material and road signage are but some examples of the instances in which the designer is required to represent and visually interpret those words which mean so much to so many.

An Assessment Of The Use Of Gender Mainstreaming To Promote Equality In Pre And Post 2011 Revolutionary Egypt, Farah Shash Feb 2012

An Assessment Of The Use Of Gender Mainstreaming To Promote Equality In Pre And Post 2011 Revolutionary Egypt, Farah Shash

Theses and Dissertations

Although the Egyptian constitution states that all Egyptians are equal before the law and equal in rights and duties, many gender inequalities existed before and continue to exist after the Egyptian 2011 revolution. One approach to creating gender equality is Gender Mainstreaming. This approach aims to achieve gender equality through governments and institutions, asking them to assess the implications and consider the needs and experiences of both men and women in any planned action, legislation, policy or program. This study examines how Gender Mainstreaming has been implemented in Egypt, the challenges it has faced, the opportunities available for further implementation, …

Gender And Identity In Contemporary Coptic Society, Hazel Haddon Feb 2012

Gender And Identity In Contemporary Coptic Society, Hazel Haddon

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to analyze the role that class plays in determining attitudes to gender among upper middle class Egyptian Copts. Through fieldwork, it explores the relationship between class, religion and gender in the lives of upper middle class Christian women. It argues that members of the upper middle class share a common â class cultureâ and have access to â cosmpolitan capitalâ which is constituted largely in social, cultural, educational and linguistic terms, and which sets them apart from the broader middle class. A distinctive class culture is produced through gender ideologies (described using terms such as â open …

Ungendering Power Relations: Stateswomen, Agency And Foreign Policy In Jordan, Catherine Guzzi Feb 2012

Ungendering Power Relations: Stateswomen, Agency And Foreign Policy In Jordan, Catherine Guzzi

Theses and Dissertations

Feminist international reFeminist international relations theory argues that womenâ s marginalization in world affairs both results from and is sustained by a gendering of international relations in which the norms of power, aggression, and self-help typically associated with masculinity dominate IR theory and practice. While gender has become an accepted topic within international relations, a coherent argument for how gendered relationships of power exist within and outside states and how they affect international relations has yet to be made. Little effort has been made to move beyond theory and examine the ways in which gender affects particular cases and issues. …

Effect Of Temperature And Relative Humidity On The Development And Fecundity Of Chilo Partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), A. Tamiru, E. Getu, B. Jembere, T. Bruce

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The spotted stemborer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is one of the most important insect pests attacking maize and sorghum in Ethiopia. Recent studies have indicated that the pest is spreading to new locations where it was not reported before. In the current study, laboratory investigations were carried out to determine the combined effect of different levels of relative humidity and temperature regimes on the development and fecundity of C. partellus, as these physical factors are known to play an important role in the life cycle of insects and adaptability to local climate. Developmental time, longevity, potential fecundity and realized …

Changing Language, Remaining Pygmy, Serge Bahuchet Feb 2012

Changing Language, Remaining Pygmy, Serge Bahuchet

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

In this article I am illustrating the linguistic diversity of African Pygmy populations in order to better address their anthropological diversity and history. I am also introducing a new method, based on the analysis of specialized vocabulary, to reconstruct the substratum of some languages they speak. I show that Pygmy identity is not based on their languages, which have often been borrowed from neighboring non-Pygmy farmer communities with whom each Pygmy group is linked. Understanding the nature of this partnership, quite variable in history, is essential to address Pygmy languages, identity and history. Finally, I show that only a multidisciplinary …

The Role Of The Sutures In Biomechanical Dynamic Simulation Of A Macaque Cranial Finite Element Model: Implications For The Evolution Of Craniofacial Form, Qian Wang, Sarah Wood, Ian R. Grosse, Callum F. Ross, Uriel Zapata, Craig Byron, Barth Wright, David S. Strait Feb 2012

The Role Of The Sutures In Biomechanical Dynamic Simulation Of A Macaque Cranial Finite Element Model: Implications For The Evolution Of Craniofacial Form, Qian Wang, Sarah Wood, Ian R. Grosse, Callum F. Ross, Uriel Zapata, Craig Byron, Barth Wright, David S. Strait

Faculty and Staff Publications

The global biomechanical impact of cranial sutures on the face and cranium during dynamic conditions is not well understood. It is hypothesized that sutures act as energy absorbers protecting skulls subjected to dynamic loads. This hypothesis predicts that sutures have a significant impact on global patterns of strain and cranial structural stiffness when analyzed using dynamic simulations; and that this global impact is influenced by suture material properties. In a finite element model developed from a juvenile Rhesus macaque cranium, five different sets of suture material properties for the zygomaticotemporal sutures were tested. The static and dynamic analyses produced similar …

The Civil Citizen, Paul Lachelier Feb 2012

The Civil Citizen, Paul Lachelier

eJournal of Public Affairs

Considerable concern is focused nowadays on young Americans’ civic engagement. “Civic engagement” is often used as a catch-all term to refer to a wide array of civic and political activities, but this term misses civil citizenship. This article draws on interviews I conducted with thirty-five young American professionals to explore what they think constitutes a “good citizen.” What emerges from their answers is less a political or civic citizen than a civil citizen whose polite individualism, proximate reach and facile, fleeting engagement may help explain younger Americans’ weaker political engagement.
