Women And Post-Conflict Society In Sierra Leone, Hazel M. Mcferson Mar 2012

Women And Post-Conflict Society In Sierra Leone, Hazel M. Mcferson

Journal of International Women's Studies

Gender inequality in Sierra Leone, after colonialism among the worst in Sub-Saharan Africa, has been heightened further by the civil war of 1992-2002—which was related in part to the struggle for control of “blood diamonds” but also to long-standing social and regional disparities, and to collapse of formal institutions and widespread corruption. Sierra Leonean women are today among the most marginalized in the world, socially, economically and politically. However, there are differences among three groups: the better educated, comparatively richer “Krios” (descendants of the original freed slaves); relatively enlightened tribes; and the more traditional patriarchal tribes. The main route to …

Intersectionality Queer Studies And Hybridity: Methodological Frameworks For Social Research, Aristea Fotopoulou Mar 2012

Intersectionality Queer Studies And Hybridity: Methodological Frameworks For Social Research, Aristea Fotopoulou

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article seeks to draw links between intersectionality and queer studies as epistemological strands by examining their common methodological tasks and by tracing some similar difficulties of translating theory into research methods. Intersectionality is the systematic study of the ways in which differences such as race, gender, sexuality, class, ethnicity and other sociopolitical and cultural identities interrelate. Queer theory, when applied as a distinct methodological approach to the study of gender and sexuality, has sought to denaturalise categories of analysis and make normativity visible. By examining existing research projects framed as ‘queer’ alongside ones that use intersectionality, I consider the …

Punching Like A Girl: Embodied Violence And Resistance In The Context Of Women’S Self-Defense, Emilia Aaltonen Mar 2012

Punching Like A Girl: Embodied Violence And Resistance In The Context Of Women’S Self-Defense, Emilia Aaltonen

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay explores the way discourses of gender and aggression can be combined in the female body. Traditionally, the female body has been seen as that of a victim and the man’s body as that of an aggressor. Although the behaviours are absorbed through learning and repetitive action, these essentialist discourses of the gendered body have become naturalized. I suggest that gendered behaviours are not fixed and, just as they are learned in the first place, they can also be unlearned and replaced by new ones. Using the example of women’s self-defense, the essay investigates how women can train their …

A Grounded Theory Investigation Into The Experiences Of African Women Refugees: Effects On Resilience And Identity And Implications For Service Provision, Katie Sherwood, Helen Liebling-Kalifani

Journal of International Women's Studies

The current study aims to explore African women’s experiences of violence during conflict. The research was undertaken in 2009 in part fulfillment for a Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology. Previous research on women refugees’ experiences has focused on the negative impact on psychological functioning despite indications that they show great strength and resilience. Using qualitative methods the study sought to identify the impact of violence on mental health as well as develop a greater understanding of the roles of resilience, coping and identity. Women from Somalia and Zimbabwe who attended a refugee centre in the UK were interviewed; analysis of …

Teaching Environmental Ethics To Mba Students, Raymond Benton Jr. Mar 2012

Teaching Environmental Ethics To Mba Students, Raymond Benton Jr.

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This essay explains the author's approach to teaching environmental ethics in the graduate school of business. The approach is based on a religious rather than a philosophical perspective, taking its light not from theology or religious studies but from anthropology. The author discusses the origins of the course, then explains the anthropological model of religion as a cultural system and briefly applies that model to economics, focusing on the worldview that undergirds it. The course then shifts to how others understand the world in which they live, introduces Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac, and ends by speculating on what …

Down Front: Challenges Facing Community College Based Performing Arts Centers, Stephen Bradley Cummins Mar 2012

Down Front: Challenges Facing Community College Based Performing Arts Centers, Stephen Bradley Cummins

Dissertations

A number of community colleges have committed significant resources to presenting arts and cultural programming for their communities. These community college based arts organizations face many of the same challenges as other non-profit arts organizations and arts centers located on traditional four-year campuses. However, present research and data considers all centers to be similar and does not take into consideration the unique qualities of community colleges. The purpose of this research study is to first define community college arts presenting and then to identify and explain the challenges facing these arts organizations.

The first stage of the mixed method study …

Asoka As Philanthropist, Roger A. Lohmann Mar 2012

Asoka As Philanthropist, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Philanthropy is one of the oldest concepts associated with western civilization. Although it is generally traced to ancient Greece, there is no clear indication where the Greeks got the idea. My earlier paper on Buddhist philanthropy was one of the first published studies in the third sector literature of evidence of Buddhist practices in this area. This unpublished paper explores more fully the history and legends associated with one of the major figures in the Buddhist philanthropic division. Asoka was the third ruler of the Maurian empire in northern India. A great warrior, Asoka is reputed to have given up …

Nailing Jelly To The Wall: Understanding Postmodernism's Influence On Library Information Science, Bob Lemoine Mar 2012

Nailing Jelly To The Wall: Understanding Postmodernism's Influence On Library Information Science, Bob Lemoine

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

How did we get into this anyway? "Defining" postmodernism

Q: What do you get when you cross a postmodernist with a Mafia boss?

A: Someone who will make you an offer that no one can understand!

(Cook, 2001(b), p. 18)

This is the attempt to define something which by its very nature avoids definition. Before we can speak of the influence postmodernism is having on library and information areas, we have to at least make the attempt to understand what postmodernism is. Several of these "definitions" are what postmodernism is not while others focus on what postmodernism seeks to be. …

The Apterous Endemic Genus Omphra Dejean (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Helluonini) Of The Indian Subcontinent: Taxonomy With Notes On Habits And Distributional Patterns, Shiju T. Raj, Thomas K. Sabu, Zhao Danyang Feb 2012

The Apterous Endemic Genus Omphra Dejean (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Helluonini) Of The Indian Subcontinent: Taxonomy With Notes On Habits And Distributional Patterns, Shiju T. Raj, Thomas K. Sabu, Zhao Danyang

Insecta Mundi

Among the four oriental genera of the tribe Helluonini, Omphra Dejean (Coleoptera: Carabidae), is unique for its endemism to the Indian subcontinent and aptery. High intraspecies variability in morphological characters and limited diagnostic information makes species differentiation of the genus Omphra a complicated task. The present study provides a description of a new species, Omphra drumonti n. sp. from the Western Ghats, redescriptions and a key to the species of Omphra, details of intraspecies variation, discussion of relationships between taxa and distributional patterns of the genus. Based on the distributional patterns in the Indian subcontinent and flightlessness of …

I mention this because CLASS has had many opportunities already this year to celebrate its communities, and there are more on the horizon."

Makna Simbolis Srimpi Lima Pada Upacara Ruwatan Di Desa Ngadireso Poncokusumo Malang, Ninik Harini

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

In Ngadireso, Poncokusumo, Malang, the Srimpi Lima dance is performed by five dancers wearing similar costumes but different colors of sampur. The floor pattern is rectangular, allowing clockwise movement by the dancers. Moreover, this dance has symbolic meaning due to its function as a ruwatan ceremony for ontang-anting, or an only child who is considered a sukerta child. The aim of this study is not only to describe the performance and function but also the symbolic meaning of the Srimpi Lima dance in the ruwatan ceremony. To obtain a clear description, the researcher applied a qualitative descriptive method through interviews, …

Renegotiating Identities, Cultures And Histories: Oppositional Looking In Shelley Niro's "This Land Is Mime Land", Jennifer Danielle Mccall Feb 2012

Renegotiating Identities, Cultures And Histories: Oppositional Looking In Shelley Niro's "This Land Is Mime Land", Jennifer Danielle Mccall

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My master's thesis explores the photographic series "This Land is Mime Land," which Shelley Niro made in 1992. Despite this work's complex form and structure, there are currently no sustained studies of this series alone, or books solely dedicated to Niro's art. Instead, "Mime Land" is often discussed in compilations that address a number of Native artists, Western feminist practices, or multiple works in Niro's oeuvre. My thesis fills this gap, as I closely investigate how "Mime Land" asks the viewer to look at visual culture, histories and Niro herself. Bell hooks's definition of the "oppositional gaze" - meaning a …

Culture In International Parental Kidnapping Mediations, Melissa A. Kucinski Feb 2012

Culture In International Parental Kidnapping Mediations, Melissa A. Kucinski

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

Mediating an international parental kidnapping case involves much more than knowing some family law-it involves complex emotions, strict time constraints, multiple nations' laws and policies, intricate international treaties, juggling interpreters, attorneys, government officials, judges, and parents who may be physically located thousands of miles apart, and the blunt reality that you may have no understanding of either parent's cultural customs or the way each will communicate with the other parent or with you. While the "culture" part of the mediation may appear to be the least significant element, it could be key to the success of the mediation. Nonetheless, "culture" …

Outward Bound To Other Cultures: Seven Guidelines For U.S. Dispute Resolution Trainers, Harold Abramson

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

"Would you like to go to Delhi to train people in negotiations?" the email message inquires. "Are you kidding?" you think to yourself. "Of course, I would get to do in an exotic location what I enjoy doing at home – helping others to resolve conflicts. And I also would meet fascinating people and tour an intriguing city and country with a local host." "YES," you reply after working out the logistical details. Now as you begin to pack your off-the-shelf training materials, you start to wonder how you should adapt your training for this foreign location. You do not …
