Genetic Diversity And Population Parameters Of Sea Otters, Enhydra Lutris, Before Fur Trade Extirpation From 1741–1911, Shawn Larson, Ron Jameson, Michael Etnier, Terry L. Jones, Roberta Hall Mar 2012

Genetic Diversity And Population Parameters Of Sea Otters, Enhydra Lutris, Before Fur Trade Extirpation From 1741–1911, Shawn Larson, Ron Jameson, Michael Etnier, Terry L. Jones, Roberta Hall

Social Sciences

All existing sea otter, Enhydra lutris, populations have suffered at least one historic population bottleneck stemming from the fur trade extirpations of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. We examined genetic variation, gene flow, and population structure at five microsatellite loci in samples from five pre-fur trade populations throughout the sea otter’s historical range: California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Russia. We then compared those values to genetic diversity and population structure found within five modern sea otter populations throughout their current range: California, Prince William Sound, Amchitka Island, Southeast Alaska and Washington. We found twice the genetic diversity in the pre-fur …

Hurricane Preparedness Of Community-Dwelling Dementia Caregivers In South Florida, Janelle J. Christensen Mar 2012

Hurricane Preparedness Of Community-Dwelling Dementia Caregivers In South Florida, Janelle J. Christensen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this dissertation is to explore how informal caregivers for people with dementia (PWD), who are community dwelling (i.e., not in nursing homes), prepare and plan for disasters. The research site is a particularly hurricane-prone region of Florida, second only to New Orleans in its vulnerability. An underlying assumption of this research is that caregivers for PWD have to plan and anticipate problems that are unique to their role. The rationale for the study described here is that disaster planning and mitigation save lives (Tengs et al. 1995), but there is little or no literature on disaster planning …

Shame By Any Other Name: Lessons For Restorative Justice From The Principles, Traditions And Practices Of Alcoholics Anonymous , Victoria Pynchon Mar 2012

Shame By Any Other Name: Lessons For Restorative Justice From The Principles, Traditions And Practices Of Alcoholics Anonymous , Victoria Pynchon

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

Because the painful experience of shame is believed to deter anti-social and criminal conduct, it has long been a staple of our criminal justice system. Its purpose has been to accomplish moral education about the wrongfulness of the crime and to prevent its occurrence through social and self-disapproval. In criminal ADR or "restorative justice" circles, the beneficial effects of "reintegrative" shame are meant to be accomplished by a "restorative justice conference" or "victim-offender mediation" ("VOMS"). These VOMs bring together victims and their loved ones; offenders and their friends and family; and, caring members of the community for the purpose of …

Team Mediation: An Interdisciplinary Model Balancing Mediation In The "Matrix" , David C. Hesser, Elizabeth Jarrell Craig Mar 2012

Team Mediation: An Interdisciplinary Model Balancing Mediation In The "Matrix" , David C. Hesser, Elizabeth Jarrell Craig

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

The Team Mediation model proposed in this article lays a foundation for the resolution of civil disputes utilizing an interdisciplinary team, which will attempt to balance mediation styles in a team dynamic in such a way as to provide the parties with a greater chance of success. Such a model will likely be met with skepticism and, as with any new idea, its benefits will need to be demonstrated to overtake the skeptics.

Style Vs. Model: Why Quibble? , Susan Oberman Mar 2012

Style Vs. Model: Why Quibble? , Susan Oberman

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

This article raises some of the questions necessary to address criticisms about quality and ethics of mediation practices: (Part I) Is there a "mandate" to provide informal justice through mediation? (Part II) Why challenge the generic mediation mythology? (Part III) Does naming differences as 'styles' result in greater clarity? (Part IV) Is mediation fulfilling its "mandate" to serve the court? (Part V) What are the obstacles to changing the dominant discourse on mediation? (Part VI) In answering these questions, an alternative framework is proposed to shift the current discourse about generic mediation based on artistry or style, to a discourse …

Statistical Dependence: Copula Functions And Mutual Information Based Measures, Pranesh Kumar

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Accurately and adequately modeling and analyzing relationships in real random phenomena involving several variables are prominent areas in statistical data analysis. Applications of such models are crucial and lead to severe economic and financial implications in human society. Since the beginning of developments in Statistical theory as the formal scientific discipline, correlation based regression theories have played a vital role in understanding and analyzing multivariate relationships primarily in context of the normal distribution world and under the assumption of linear association. In this paper, we aim to focus on presenting notion of dependence of random variables in statistical sense and …

Chimpanzee Personhood: Supporting Scientific Documentation, Jonathan Balcombe Mar 2012

Chimpanzee Personhood: Supporting Scientific Documentation, Jonathan Balcombe

Sentience Collection

The aim of this document is to provide scientific support for granting chimpanzees and bonobos the legal status of persons. The studies summarized here have been selected because they show these species to have levels of awareness, cognition, emotionality and virtue that rivals that of their hominid cousins, Homo sapiens. Chimps, like other great apes, have long-term relationships, grieve the loss of a loved-one, can solve complex puzzles, display a sense of justice, and can learn hundreds of signs and put them together in logical sentences.

Tool Use In Fishes, Culum Brown Mar 2012

Tool Use In Fishes, Culum Brown

Sentience Collection

Tool use was once considered the sole domain of humans. Over the last 40 years, however, it has become apparent that tool use may be widespread across the animal kingdom. Pioneering studies in primates have shaped the way we think about tool use in animals, but have also lead to a bias both in terms of our expectations about which animals should be capable of using tools and the working definition of tool use. Here I briefly examine tool use in terrestrial animals and consider the constraints of the current working definition of tool use in fishes. Fishes lack grasping …

Overinterpreting Law, Robert F. Blomquist Mar 2012

Overinterpreting Law, Robert F. Blomquist

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

Overinterpretation has attracted considerable attention in other fields, such as literary studies, science, and rhetoric, but it is undertheorized in law. This Article attempts to initiate a theory of legal overinterpretation by examining the rhetorical nature of excess, the sociological dimensions of roles in team performances, and citation to legal and non-legal sources that have discussed overinterpretation. The Article concludes by positing illustrative categories of potential legal overinterpretation, and providing an examination of ways to minimize legal overinterpretation through a judicious, pragmatic balance between abstract considerations and concrete considerations in law.

Why Land Tenure Reform Is The Key To Political Stability In Tonga, Kersti Harter Kennedy Mar 2012

Why Land Tenure Reform Is The Key To Political Stability In Tonga, Kersti Harter Kennedy

Washington International Law Journal

The Kingdom of Tonga, a South Pacific country, erupted in violent pro-democracy riots in late 2006 after decades of political unease. Tonga’s people are divided into two main classes: the nobles and the commoners. These two classes have long differed in political and land rights in a hierarchy that is typical of chiefdoms such as Tonga. Tonga’s government has attempted to deal with the sometimes violent, commoner-led pro-democracy movement by amending its Constitution to allow commoners to vote for more of the members of the Legislative Assembly. The resulting government and the noblemen have not, however, shown a commitment to …

Ice Raids, Children, Media And Making Sense Of Latino Newcomers In Flyover Country., Edmund T. Hamann, Jenelle Reeves

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Extant cultural models articulated in “Flyover Country” print media responses to ICE workplace raids showed a welcome of sorts of Latino newcomers. These models suggest a place for Latino students at school and more broadly for Latino children and parents in these communities. Thus, they index an unwillingness to see Latino newcomers in dehumanizing reductive terms, like “alien” or “illegal,” even as these more debilitating models may also be extant elsewhere in the public sphere.

A Review By Jason Suratt Of Professing To Learn: Creating Tenured Lives And Careers In The American Research University, By Anna Neumann, Jason Suratt

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In her book, Professing to Learn: Creating Tenured Lives and Careers in the American Research University, Anna Neumann presents a valid case for the importance of investigating the types of learning and work performed by professors following their promotion and tenure. She argues there are popular misconceptions regarding scholarly learning and the amount of work carried out by professors at this point in their careers. These misconceptions are pervasive not only among the general public but also among academics. To that end, she draws attention to the potential advantages this research has for professors who are about to embark …
