Verbal Community Reinforcement, With An Illustration Using The Esoteric Buddhist Concepts Of Fuse And Muzai No Nanse, Bernard Guerin, Sejima Junichiro Nov 2012

Verbal Community Reinforcement, With An Illustration Using The Esoteric Buddhist Concepts Of Fuse And Muzai No Nanse, Bernard Guerin, Sejima Junichiro

The Psychological Record

Problems with Skinner's (1957) definition of verbal behavior are raised and one possible solution is presented. It is suggested that the way in which verbal communities shape behavior is distinctive-unlike the physical environment, verbal communities have culturally evolved a system of extremely generalized conditions for reinforcement which allows arbitrary relations to be shaped-and therefore could serve to define verbal behavior and exclude other forms of socially mediated behaviors. The form of "loose" shaping used is described, along with anthropological and sociological equivalents, and a suggestion is made of how it might figure in equivalence class formation. Two terms from Esoteric …

The Forensic Burke: A For(U)Mative Member Of The Parlor, Courtney James Wright Nov 2012

The Forensic Burke: A For(U)Mative Member Of The Parlor, Courtney James Wright

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, I detail the forensics education of Kenneth Burke, a leading rhetorical theorist and critic of the twentieth century. After investigating this previously unexamined area, I argue that Burke’s competitive forensics experiences pivotally informed his rhetorical schema. Theoretically guided by Burke’s pivotal term the forensic, I begin by mapping the contours of Burke’s educational biography. Next, I analyze and reconstruct Burke’s forensics education by focusing on the forensic organizations of Peabody High School, Burke’s literary society experiences at Ohio State University and Columbia University, and the literary activities of Greenwich Village. Finally, I proffer connections between forensics …

Taking Archaeology To The Classroom: A Model For A Fifth Grade In-Class Fieldtrip, Tamara J. Luce Nov 2012

Taking Archaeology To The Classroom: A Model For A Fifth Grade In-Class Fieldtrip, Tamara J. Luce

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Public archaeology has grown over the last decade due to interest in the field and Cultural Resource Management requirements. One group that is often overlooked in outreach efforts is children.

For my thesis I designed an in-class archaeology fieldtrip for fifth grade students. The overarching goal of my program is to introduce children to the field of archaeology in an age-appropriate way that teaches basic archaeological concepts and generates interest and awareness of the field. To create the strongest program possible I conducted research on outreach programs, and surveyed public archaeologists and teachers to determine what elements they would like …

Transgressing Sexuality: An Interdisciplinary Study Of Economic History, Anthropology, And Queer Theory, Jason Gary Damron Nov 2012

Transgressing Sexuality: An Interdisciplinary Study Of Economic History, Anthropology, And Queer Theory, Jason Gary Damron

Dissertations and Theses

This interdisciplinary thesis examines the concept of sexuality through lenses provided by economic history, anthropology, and queer theory. A close reading reveals historical parallels from the late 1800s between concepts of a desiring, utility-maximizing economic subject on the one hand, and a desiring, carnally decisive sexological subject on the other. Social constructionists have persuasively argued that social and economic elites deploy the discourse of sexuality as a technique of discipline and social control in class- and gender-based struggles. Although prior scholarship discusses how contemporary ideas of sexuality reflect this origin, many anthropologists and queer theorists continue to use "sexuality" uncritically …

Why Men Participate: A Review Of Perpetrator Research On The Rwandan Genocide, Cyanne E. Loyle Nov 2012

Why Men Participate: A Review Of Perpetrator Research On The Rwandan Genocide, Cyanne E. Loyle

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

In “Why Men Participate: A Review of Perpetrator Research on the Rwandan Genocide,” Cyanne E. Loyle provides a thought-provoking analysis of the existing state of the genocide perpetrator literature. Relying on fieldwork conducted in Rwanda over the past several years, her research contributes to the development of a unified theory of participation in genocide (that is, who participates and why) that can be examined and applied across case.

International Activity And Domestic Law, Adam I. Muchmore Nov 2012

International Activity And Domestic Law, Adam I. Muchmore

Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)

This essay explores the ways States use their domestic laws to regulate activities that cross national borders. Domestic-law enforcement decisions play an underappreciated role in the development of international regulatory policy, particularly in situations where the enforcing State's power to apply its law extraterritorially is not contested. Collective action problems suggest there will be an undersupply of enforcement decisions that promote global welfare and an oversupply of enforcement decisions that promote national welfare. These collective action problems may be mitigated in part by government networks and other forms of regulatory cooperation.

The Archeology Of Civil War Naval Operations At Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, 1861-1865, James D. Spirek

Faculty & Staff Publications

In 2008 the Maritime Research Division (MRD) of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina received a National Park Service American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) grant to study the naval operations at Charleston Harbor during the American Civil War. Funds from the ABPP grant allowed the MRD to undertake historical research and archeological investigations on cultural resources remaining on the Charleston Harbor Naval Battlefield, the scene of a protracted struggle from 1861 to 1865 between Confederate defenders and Federal attackers. This report, The Archeology of Civil War Naval Operations at Charleston Harbor, 1861-1865, …

Writing To Understand Our Lives And Languages: A Case Study Of An Immigrant Women's Writing Group, Jessica D. Swan Nov 2012

Writing To Understand Our Lives And Languages: A Case Study Of An Immigrant Women's Writing Group, Jessica D. Swan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Writing groups have empirical support for their ability to give voice to stories, improve language skills, and result in personal and social transformations. However, the research into their effectiveness among English Language Learners (ELLs) is limited. This case study of an immigrant women's writing group in Memphis, Tennessee, examined the effects of participation on the language skills, identities, and communities of the women. Ten (10) women who were all non-native English speakers participated in a writing group held over the course of ten (10) weeks for two (2) hours each week. The structure of the writing group allowed for personal …
