The French Identity Crisis: Fending Off The Franglais Invasion, Laura Cohen Apr 2012

The French Identity Crisis: Fending Off The Franglais Invasion, Laura Cohen

Honors Projects

In a nation that derives so much of its identity from a longstanding cultural heritage, rather than from an economic or political tradition, France finds itself facing an identity crisis. In recent decades, France has been unable to avoid the ever-expanding reach of globalization, and perhaps even more threatening, the grasp of Americanization. Consequently, as English has begun to permeate seemingly every aspect of French society, France's first line of defense against such a cultural intrusion is its language policy. This paper first examines the longstanding history between the creation of a French nation and the promotion of the French …

Around The “G” Word: From Raphael Lemkin’S Definition To Current Memorial And Academic Controversies, Jacques Semelin Apr 2012

Around The “G” Word: From Raphael Lemkin’S Definition To Current Memorial And Academic Controversies, Jacques Semelin

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The term “genocide” has generated passion and misunderstanding since its coining in 1944 by Ra- phael Lemkin. Applying this term to very heterogeneous historical and current situations brings up many objections and debates. The first problem arising from the word genocide concerns its uses, in- cluding its memorial, humanitarian, legal, and political purposes. Scholars are divided about its meaning. However, this article stresses that the global digital academic enterprise, Online Encyclo- pedia of Mass Violence, represents today a unique effort to gather the most important historical cases of mass human destruction, with respect to their own singularity, while offering a …

The Effects Of Dependent Infants On The Social Behavior Of Mantled Howler Monkeys (Alouatta Palliate), Keziah Katz Apr 2012

The Effects Of Dependent Infants On The Social Behavior Of Mantled Howler Monkeys (Alouatta Palliate), Keziah Katz

Honors Theses and Capstones

Six weeks of observation on eight groups of wild mantled howler monkeys revealed that the presence of a dependent infant alters the frequency of social interactions between a female with an infant and other adult monkeys. Males preferred to spend time with females without infants but still spent more time with females with infants than with males. Females without infants spent significantly less time with females with infants than with males or other females without infants and females with infants decreased their frequency of social interaction overall without preference for males, females or other females with infants.

A Little Rumba Numba: Latin American Music In Musical Theatre, John David Cockerill Apr 2012

A Little Rumba Numba: Latin American Music In Musical Theatre, John David Cockerill

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Despite the prevalent use of Latin American musical styles in American musical theatre, little research has been done on the subject. Quite often the fact that a musical number even has a Latin beat goes unrecognized. This paper examines the various genres of Latin American music that have had an impact in the United States and in musical shows both on and off Broadway. Exploring a large number of examples from musicals throughout the 20th century has caused trends and tendencies in the way Latin music has been used come to light. These include common thematic content and stereotypes and …

Improving Creativity In Temporary Virtual Teams, Michael A. Zore Apr 2012

Improving Creativity In Temporary Virtual Teams, Michael A. Zore

Professional Projects

We live in an interconnected world in which physical location has become less of a hindrance to communication, yet newer message transmission media alter not only the process but also the content of creative communication. While temporary virtual teams offer alternatives to solve issues which resist resolution using traditional approaches, virtual team characteristics can limit the ability to create novel and useful solutions. Since creativity is a necessary and significant requirement for success across a wide variety of domains, this poses a serious challenge for those intending to improve organizational creativity through the use of virtual teams and exposes the …

Neural Basis Of Egalitarian Behavior, Christopher T. Dawes, Peter John Loewen, Darren Schreiber, Alan N. Simmons, Taru Flagan, Richard Mcelreath, Scott E. Bokemper, James H. Fowler, Martin P. Paulus

Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Individuals are willing to sacrifice their own resources to promote equality in groups. These costly choices promote equality and are associated with behavior that supports cooperation in humans, but little is known about the brain processes involved. We use functional MRI to study egalitarian preferences based on behavior observed in the “random income game.” In this game, subjects decide whether to pay a cost to alter group members’ randomly allocated incomes.Wespecifically examinewhether egalitarian behavior is associated with neural activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and the insular cortex, two regions that have been shown to be related to social preferences. …

Political Ecology: An Analysis Of Peruvian Government Discourses In Support Of Road Projects, Juan Boettner Apr 2012

Political Ecology: An Analysis Of Peruvian Government Discourses In Support Of Road Projects, Juan Boettner

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects

In this paper, I will explore the ways in which the Peruvian government supports road projects through various well-developed arguments. I will look at how authorities present and/or support road projects in different temporal and spatial scales. I will try to answer the following questions:

1) How has the Peruvian government’s arguments for improved connectivity changed over time?
2) What are the implications of such changes?

Answering these questions will help explain the government’s role and biases regarding economic development in Peru. Furthermore, answers to these questions can help us understand past positions and predict what the government’s position may …

Black Bahamas : Political Constructions Of Bahamian National Identity, Maria A. Lee Apr 2012

Black Bahamas : Political Constructions Of Bahamian National Identity, Maria A. Lee

Honors Theses

On Tuesday, 27 April 1965, in the House of Assembly an event known as “Black Tuesday” struck the capital city of Nassau, New Providence in The Bahamas. A political furor arose in response to the failure of the ruling government to accurately determine voter distribution and boundaries. In frustration, the leader of the opposition motioned towards the mace, shouting, “This is the symbol of authority, and authority in this island belongs to the people.” With a burgeoning crowd below, he then lifted the mace in front of the Speaker, and threw it down from the window of the House. “Yes, …

The Case Of The Zia: Looking Beyond Trademark Law To Protect Sacred Symbols, Stephanie B. Turner Apr 2012

The Case Of The Zia: Looking Beyond Trademark Law To Protect Sacred Symbols, Stephanie B. Turner

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

This Article tells the story of a tribe’s fight, over the past two decades, to reclaim its sacred symbol. Members of the Zia tribe, a Native American group located near Albuquerque, New Mexico, have been using their sacred sun symbol in religious ceremonies since 1200 C.E. Today, the symbol appears on the New Mexico state flag, letterhead, and license plate, and on numerous commercial products, including motorcycles and portable toilets. The tribe claims that the state appropriated the symbol without permission in 1925, and that the continued use of the symbol by various parties dilutes its sacred meaning and disparages …

Faithful Remembering: Constructing Dutch America In The Twentieth Century, David E. Zwart Apr 2012

Faithful Remembering: Constructing Dutch America In The Twentieth Century, David E. Zwart

Dissertations

The people of the Dutch-American community constructed and maintained a strong ethnoreligion identity in the twentieth despite pressures to join the mainstream of the United States. A strong institutional completeness of congregations and schools resulted from and contributed to this identity. The people in these institutions created a shared identity by demanding the loyalty of members as well as constructing narratives that convinced people of the need for the ethnoreligious institutions.

The narratives of the Dutch-American community reflected and reinforced a shared identity, which relied on a collective memory. The framing, maintaining, altering, and remodeling of the collective memory from …
