I Am Who Am, Ali M. Scattergood May 2012

I Am Who Am, Ali M. Scattergood

Lawrence University Honors Projects

This body of work includes both black and white photographs and a film. In each work, I put my collaborators in an environment consisting of a simple black curtain, to neutralize the space, and a 2 foot by 2 foot glowing orb of light. I asked my subjects to interact with the glowing orb in any way they felt most comfortable. I adjusted my collaborators only to keep them from leaving the frame of my camera. The positions and movements these people produced are both intimate and authentic to themselves. As such, each experience with the orb, captured on film, …

“And They Call Pennsylvania A Blue State?”, Pat Heilman May 2012

“And They Call Pennsylvania A Blue State?”, Pat Heilman

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

By now, most academicians are aware of the assaults on academic freedom as contained in the Academic Bill of Rights (ABOR) legislation introduced, in some form, in some 24 states. Part of a national movement to muzzle professors deemed too liberal for our colleges and universities, this witch hunt, instigated by former liberal radical David Horowitz, has had a chilling effect on campuses. Some faculty organizations are fighting back; APSCUF (Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties), a union representing some 5,500 faculty and coaches in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), is one of them. This …

Enemy Within, Enemy Without: Dominican Attitudes Toward Haitians Before And After The Earthquake Of January 12, 2010, Maria Braden Clark May 2012

Enemy Within, Enemy Without: Dominican Attitudes Toward Haitians Before And After The Earthquake Of January 12, 2010, Maria Braden Clark

Open Access Theses

There has long been tension between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, two nations begrudgingly linked by the geographic constraints of a shared island, differing in their economic status, way of life, and how they perceive themselves and each other. This tension springs from conflicts over land, the lingering perceived threat of Haiti’s occupation of the Dominican Republic in the mid-1800s, the discourse of the Trujillo dictatorship that rejected Haiti as a means by which to forge national unity, and ongoing Haitian labor migration that has its roots in the emergence of the Dominican sugar industry. This thesis performs a content …

Lil' Eva Discovers Her Alternative Identity: An Adventure In Gender, Identity, And Cuba, Elizabeth C. Salerno May 2012

Lil' Eva Discovers Her Alternative Identity: An Adventure In Gender, Identity, And Cuba, Elizabeth C. Salerno

Open Access Theses

Traveling is a way of expanding your perspective, which allows you to experiment with different genders of identity. Cuban children in Luyano spend much time outside of their home, or traveling "in the sense that they are exposed to worlds outside of their immediate family. Using the character of Lil Eva as a literary device. I hope to demonstrated the ways in which travel influences your identity. Simultaneously her adventures in Luyano demonstrate the fluidity of interaction between people of different ages and lifestyles. While this sort of fluidity exists in many cultures, I believe the economic pressures present in …

Seeds For Change: Examining The Association Between Race, Food Security, And Urban Agriculture, Komal Razvi May 2012

Seeds For Change: Examining The Association Between Race, Food Security, And Urban Agriculture, Komal Razvi

Honors College Theses

Access to healthy, nutritious food is one of the most basic human needs. Unfortunately, a large portion of the global population, including that of the United States, has limited access to such food, hence putting families in a state of food insecurity. Food insecurity occurs when households are unable to (or struggle to) provide adequate food to all household members due to lack of funds or food resources. This phenomenon is considered to be a major concern in many urban settings such as Detroit, as it is a characteristic of societal distress. Interestingly, research has shown that while food insecurity …
