Quantification Of Storm Surge Probability Using Ensemble Slosh Model Data, David Scott Schlotzhauer May 2012

Quantification Of Storm Surge Probability Using Ensemble Slosh Model Data, David Scott Schlotzhauer

Theses and Dissertations

One of the greatest hazards from hurricanes is the flooding due to storm surge. Emergency managers traditionally plan for storm surge by looking at the worst possible impact and design their plans accordingly. This is a safe course of action, but can also be a wasted expense if the worst case does not occur. Risk-based planning is a way to incorporate the likelihood or probability of an impact occurring into emergency planning. With respect to storm surge, though, there is very little information regarding probability of occurrence. This research uses data from a commonly accepted storm surge model, SLOSH from …

Work To Live Or Live To Work?: The Impact Of Gender, Personal Resources, And National Policy On The Importance Of Intrinsic And Extrinsic Work Rewards In Post-Industrial Nations, Christy Haines Flatt

Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the importance of intrinsic and extrinsic work rewards among women and men in 12 post-industrial nations in the Global North. Guiding my analyses was Esping-Andersen’s theoretical framework and the following three main research questions: (1) how individual attributes and national policies influence the salience individuals assign to intrinsic and extrinsic rewards; (2) how individual attributes and national policies differ from each other in relative magnitude as predictors of the value individuals assign to intrinsic and extrinsic rewards; and (3) how individual attributes and national policies impact the importance individuals assign to intrinsic and extrinsic rewards differs …

Answers In Diagenesis: Assessing Mussel Shell Diagenesis In The Modern Vadose Zone At Lyon's Bluff (22ok520), Northeast Mississippi, Joe Dan Collins

Theses and Dissertations

This study considers the chemical alteration of archaeological freshwater shell above the water table at Lyon's Bluff, located in east-central Mississippi, changes in trace element concentrations between unfired and fired shell, and the effect bacteria have on archaeological freshwater shell. Thin-section petrography, X-ray diffraction, cathodoluminescence, and scanning electron microscopy were conducted on archaeological shell from four layers from Unit 20N20W, with a depth of 80 cm spanning 450 years. ICP-MS analysis was also conducted on a modern freshwater shell. Results of the microscopy indicate pristine crystal structure. ICP-MS data show that certain trace elements within the shell maintain their concentration …

Tennessee Williams And The Reinvention Of The Southern Plantation, Elizabeth Faye Coggins

Developed out of a need for a reliable methodology of documenting historic landscapes, the National Park Service uses Cultural Landscape Reports to determine the significance and integrity of historic landscapes. A cultural landscape report for the park had not yet been completed. This research consists of a historical narrative covering the 10,000 years of human occupation in the cave, a documentation of …

The Influence Of The Physical Environment And Culture On Family Member Involvement And Succession Intentions In The Family Business: An Application Of Historical, Cultural And Political Ecology, Gregory Paul Tapis May 2012

The Influence Of The Physical Environment And Culture On Family Member Involvement And Succession Intentions In The Family Business: An Application Of Historical, Cultural And Political Ecology, Gregory Paul Tapis

Theses and Dissertations

Family businesses comprise 80 to 90 percent of all businesses in North America (Shanker & Astrachan, 1996) and account for 60 percent of total U.S. employment (Hutcheson, 1999). Furthermore, 34 percent of the businesses listed on the S&P’s 500 Index are family businesses (Anderson & Reeb, 2003). There are three primary purposes of this dissertation. First, based on a review of the kinship, anthropology, and family business literatures, a definition of family for use in family business research is proposed. Second, specific patterns of family member involvement in a sample of 1,000 family businesses associated with the Small Business Development …

Who Is Your Bias?: The Symbolic Interactions And Social Solidarity Of The K-Pop Fan Community, Cassie Kwon May 2012

Who Is Your Bias?: The Symbolic Interactions And Social Solidarity Of The K-Pop Fan Community, Cassie Kwon

Humanities and Creative Projects

This study explores the online experience of k-pop (Korean Pop Music) and its international fan base. Through ethnographic participation and observation on the Allkpop k-pop gossip website and the 6Theory fan forums, I examine the rituals of devotion and allegiance to k-pop music idols. These rituals are central to forming bonds of social solidarity and community in the absence of face-to-face interaction. Due to their significant role in online k-pop interaction, fans refer to their favorite idols by using the term “bias,” indicating forms of judgment about cultural life. As a form of cultural capital, fans use these biases to …

Culture Counts: Culture, Language & Mathematics In The U.S., Arielle L. Ramberg May 2012

Culture Counts: Culture, Language & Mathematics In The U.S., Arielle L. Ramberg

Humanities and Creative Projects

This study explores the interaction between culture, language, and mathematics through the experiences of multicultural individuals in the United States as they learn mathematics in English as a second language. Mathematics is generally regarded as a fundamental a-cultural truth, denying the role that humans have played in math’s construction and leaving the variations in understandings of mathematics around the world unacknowledged. This study critically examines this perspective through the contradicting experiences of multicultural individuals shared in qualitative interviews. I focus on the power relations implicit in not only the standard English of the classroom, but also the standard forms of …

Organizing The World: Power Dynamics And “Civilization” In The British Museum, Katherine E. Steir May 2012

Organizing The World: Power Dynamics And “Civilization” In The British Museum, Katherine E. Steir

History Honors Projects

The British Museum has a long and complex relationship with the British Colonial project. Applying museum theory to case studies found in the museum, this paper explores the ways in which empire is reconstructed within the British Museum, and also investigates how public gallery spaces can engage with controversial history. In the 21st century the museum struggles to reinvent itself as a universal institution presenting collections from around the world with sensitivity. However, the museum still expresses nostalgia for the imperial past, and presents a specific and homogenous image of the ideal British citizen.

Repatriating The Bust Of Nefertiti: A Critical Perspective On Cultural Ownership, Lauren Bearden May 2012

Repatriating The Bust Of Nefertiti: A Critical Perspective On Cultural Ownership, Lauren Bearden

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

Who owns antiquities? This question has plagued the global community in recent times and has opened dialogues between former colonial Western countries and their past colonized nations whose property is exhibited. This essay examines the conflicting perspectives of ownership in the repatriation of the Bust of Nefertiti between Berlin, Germany and Egypt. By analyzing the effects of European occupation in Egypt and the Western dominance in foreign cultures during the Age of Imperialism, a moral argument arises questioning the legality of the Bust’s removal. This article will review the historical significance of the Bust of Nefertiti in terms of its …
