Teacher Educators As Role Models: A Qualitative Examination Of Student Teachers’ And Teacher Educators’ Views Towards Their Roles, Mahsa Izadinia Jun 2012

Teacher Educators As Role Models: A Qualitative Examination Of Student Teachers’ And Teacher Educators’ Views Towards Their Roles, Mahsa Izadinia

The Qualitative Report

Teacher Education is considered to be the first and perhaps the most important stage in the professional development of student teachers (Wideen, Mayer-Smith, & Moon, 1998) as teacher educators who work with student teachers during these programs exert significant influence on who students are and will become (Caires, 2007; Chalies, Ria, Bertone, Trohel, & Durand, 2005). This article highlights the impact of language teacher educators’ ideas and beliefs with regard to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and their teaching practices on their student teachers’ beliefs and perceptions about their role as language teachers. 20 Iranian language student teachers …

Human Biology

Early this year, more than 60 molecular anthropologists from across the country gathered in San Antonio, Texas, to hone their technical and analytical skills in the growing field of genomics at the first ever Application of Genomics to Anthropo- logical Research (AGAR) workshop. The Personal Characteristics And Pedgagogical Styles Of Effective Abstinence Education Instructors, Karen D. Hill

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the personal characteristics and pedagogical styles of effective abstinence instructors. Abstinence instructors receive regular training and evaluation and tend to remain in the abstinence education field for multiple years. Abstinence education programs are offered throughout the United States and present a pool of participants in which to sociologically examine the dynamics of the relationship of adolescents and instructors in a youth prevention program. This qualitative study is based on in-depth personal interviews of eight abstinence instructors who shared insights into their own teaching experiences, expressed their thoughts about who they are as …

Technology In The Aid Of Delivering Economic Content To Teachers: Virtual Economics V. 3, John R. Swinton, Benjamin Scafidi

Faculty Articles

We examine the impact on student achievement of a face-to-face teacher workshop that also provides economics instructors with access to an electronic library of instructional and reference material for their economics classroom—Virtual Economics v. 3 (VE3), offered by the Council for Economic Education. Based on evidence using student and teacher-level administrative data from the Georgia Department of Education and controlling for students’ prior achievement in mathematics, we find evidence that the VE3 workshop experience increases student achievement in high school economics. Our difference-in-differences estimates suggest that teacher participation in the VE3 workshop increases student achievement by 0.061 standard deviations on …

Learning Without Being Taught: A Look At How Schools, The Home And The Neighborhood Influence "Race" Conceptualization, Owen Christopher Gaither Jun 2012

Learning Without Being Taught: A Look At How Schools, The Home And The Neighborhood Influence "Race" Conceptualization, Owen Christopher Gaither

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Where do we get our ideas about the concept of `race'? The conceptualization of `race' has long been a topic of interest in the social sciences and society in general. The word `race' has been used and defined in different ways and different purposes throughout U.S. history. The definition of `race' therefore is arbitrary, changing according to the situation, but the consequences of how the word `race' is used are concrete and effect peoples lives daily. This research, in accord with much of the literature on the topic, shows that public schools play a major role in the conceptualization …

Progressive Entanglements Religious Intimacy In Japanese–Filipino Marriages, Mario Ivan Lopez Jun 2012

Progressive Entanglements Religious Intimacy In Japanese–Filipino Marriages, Mario Ivan Lopez

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Studies on international marriages often focus on how gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity are constructed and articulated through the migration process. The influence of religion as one articulator in migrants’ lives and its influence on the family tend to be ignored, but arguably individuals’ faith must be included in the research agenda. Using ethnographic examples, thisarticle traces the religious practices that develop in the lives of some Japanese–Filipino couples. Thisarticle highlights not just the transnational mobility of migrants, but also the movement of their faith and its potential impact on intimate relations within migrant homes and communities postmigration.

Difference And Alliance In Transnational Social Fields The Pendular Identity Of The Filipino Middle Class, Koki Seki Jun 2012

Difference And Alliance In Transnational Social Fields The Pendular Identity Of The Filipino Middle Class, Koki Seki

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle offers a cultural analysis of Filipino middle-class identity emerging in transnational social fields. Although the practice of identity construction of the middle class leads to polarization and fragmentation of society, the ambivalent character of their identity results in social networks and alliances with members of different social classes in the Philippines. Thisarticle provides an approach to understand seemingly discrete and contrasting dual aspects—of differentiation and alliance, exclusion and inclusion, and plurality and unity—found in transnational social fields through an alternative framework of civil society and public sphere in the Philippines and other parts of the globalizing world.

Toward A Working Theory Of Neurorhetorics, Jeffrey L. Honnold Jun 2012

Toward A Working Theory Of Neurorhetorics, Jeffrey L. Honnold

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This piece makes the claim that rhetoric is first philosophy--before philosophy, epistemology, ontology, or any other field--or that rhetoric is, at the least, on equal footing as these fields because:

empathy--and thusly the impulse for communication--is physiologically hardwired into humans; special distinctions between human and animal are largely artificial constructions, as is evidenced by neurosciences; "hard" science, in the form of neurosciences, is providing entrance points & opportunities for rhetoric to raise its status within the academy; and said neurosciences, in addition to empathy studies, have shown strong evidence supporting linguistic and evolutionary links between humans and other species, thereby …

Effect Of Antioxidants And Oxidative Stress On Different Cancer Cell Types, Gaytri Devi Gupta Elera

Theses and Dissertations

Vaccinium cyanococcus, most commonly known as blueberry, is a fruit native to North America that is known for its unique taste and high antioxidant content. The skin, seed and juice of both organically and conventionally grown blueberry extract were analyzed for antioxidant content using both the Hydrophilic and Lipophilic Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) assays. Results from the Hydrophilic ORAC test showed that conventionally grown blue berries had a higher antioxidant capacity across all samples, while the Lipophilic ORAC assay showed that the antioxidant concentration of organically cultivated blueberry juice was highest, but conventionally grown blueberry seed and skin …
