Butterbeer, Cauldron Cakes, And Fizzing Whizzbees: Food In J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series, Leisa Anne Clark Jun 2012

Butterbeer, Cauldron Cakes, And Fizzing Whizzbees: Food In J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series, Leisa Anne Clark

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACTThis thesis situates the Harry Potter books into the greater body of food studies and into the extant children's literary tradition through an examination of how food can be used to understand cultural identity. Food is a biological need, but because we have created social rules and rituals around food consumption and sharing, there is more to eating than simple nutritional value. The Harry Potter series is as much about overcoming childhood adversity, and good versus evil, as it is about magic, and food in the Harry Potter series is both abundant and relevant to the narrative, context, and themes …

Urban Teacher Candidates Discover Inquiry-Based Learning While Developing Oral History Projects, Megan Blumenreich Jun 2012

Urban Teacher Candidates Discover Inquiry-Based Learning While Developing Oral History Projects, Megan Blumenreich

i.e.: inquiry in education

The current generation of urban pre-service teachers attended K-12 schools under the increasing influence of a testing and standards-based, market-driven education, a trend that has been growing since the 1990s (Ravitch, 2010). Because of this, I argue here that exposing these pre-service teachers to an inquiry-driven learning experience, in this case working on an oral history project, is vital if we are to develop new urban teachers who can foster student-centered teaching and learning. This study focused on one section of a course at an urban university in which most students were either immigrants or children of immigrants, representing a …

Clergy And Gender In Medieval England: A Bioarchaeological Approach, Alexandra Nicole Busot Jun 2012

Clergy And Gender In Medieval England: A Bioarchaeological Approach, Alexandra Nicole Busot

Open Access Theses

In the Middle Ages, masculinity could best be defined by the ability of a male to impregnate women, protect dependents and serve as a provider for one's family. With the Gregorian Reform of the eleventh century came a campaign against clerical marriage, which thereby effectively disallowed men of faith to perform the traditional masculine gender roles. The clergy, while biologically male, were seemingly emasculated by their vows of chastity and expected to perform tasks that in many cases were considered to be feminine. For these reasons, some medievalists have proposed that the unique role that these men performed should be …

Food Security In The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation: A Nursing Educational Module, Beth E. Grund Jun 2012

Food Security In The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation: A Nursing Educational Module, Beth E. Grund

Theses and Graduate Projects

Assurance of food security has been a continuing goal of world nations for more than 60 years. The educational module that is the focus of this project is designed to increase the awareness of baccalaureate and post-graduate nurses about the health disparity of low food security as a social justice issue. International policy to detail the development of the concept of food security as a human right is examined and then contrasted with current national policy. Additional topics discussed are connections between low food security on health as well as a deficit in nurse knowledge. The educational module focuses on …

The Quality Of Education In Tanzania: An Exploration Into Its Determinants, Sam Maghimbi Jun 2012

The Quality Of Education In Tanzania: An Exploration Into Its Determinants, Sam Maghimbi

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Recent rapid expansion in school enrolment at all levels represents a profound challenge to parents and the government in Tanzania. There has been a very high increase in the number of school-going-age children from year to year due to high fertility. Government resources are thinly spread in very many schools, and there is fear that quality of education may be compromised. The paper presents the argument that there is in evidence a government-will-pay (gwp) attitude in the parents’ values. The parents’ contribution to secure improvement in quality of education is not forthcoming because of this belief, which is traced to …
