A New Body Shape Index Predicts Mortality Hazard Independently Of Body Mass Index, Nir Y. Krakauer, Jesse C. Krakauer
Publications and Research
Background Obesity, typically quantified in terms of Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeding threshold values, is considered a leading cause of premature death worldwide. For given body size (BMI), it is recognized that risk is also affected by body shape, particularly as a marker of abdominal fat deposits. Waist circumference (WC) is used as a risk indicator supplementary to BMI, but the high correlation of WC with BMI makes it hard to isolate the added value of WC. Methods and Findings We considered a USA population sample of 14,105 non-pregnant adults () from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) …

A Review Of “Compromising Scholarship: Religious And Political Bias In American Higher Education", Ken Badley
A Review Of “Compromising Scholarship: Religious And Political Bias In American Higher Education", Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
In Compromising Scholarship, Yancey argues that politically conservative persons, religiously conservative persons, and especially politically, religiously conservative persons face a disadvantage when seeking either employment or a fair hearing in the contemporary American academy, especially in the social sciences and humanities. Several times while reading this book, I recalled a job interview of my own at a university in Canada. One interviewer asked whether my religious convictions might undermine my ability to teach courses in a program that prepared teachers for service in Saskatchewan’s public schools. I noted that, while the question was illegal under Canada’s Charter of Rights and …

Being An Insider Researcher While Conducting Case Study Research, Sema Unluer
The Qualitative Report
It is crucial for social researchers to clarify their researchers’ roles, especially for those utilizing qualitative methodology to make their research credible. The purpose of this paper is to examine the advantages and disadvantages of the researcher’s insider role, an instructor, occupied within case study research on the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the teaching-learning process at the School for the Handicapped (SfH) in Turkey. In this respect the author will demonstrate and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of being an insider-researcher considering the researcher’s role, determining the case, the aim and research questions of the study, …

Peer-Support Training For Nonliterate And Semiliterate Female Ex-Combatants: Experience In Burundi, Cameron Macauley, Monica Onyango, Eric Niragira
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
In September 2011, 25 female veterans of Burundi’s civil war were trained to become peer-support workers. The five-day training, funded under a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and conducted by James Madison University’s Center for International Stabilization and Recovery, was the first of its kind to offer peer-counseling skills to non-literate and semiliterate women.

Firearms Safety In Somaliland: From Mine Action To Community Safety, William Vest-Lillesøe
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Multiple border and civil wars have left Somaliland contaminated with explosive remnants of war and a surplus of small arms and light weapons. Today, unsecured firearms threaten daily life in rural villages, resulting in more deaths in Somaliland than from recent landmine incidents. Addressing the need for firearm security, Danish Demining Group provides training and awareness through its Community Safety program.

Library Workstations And The Changing Paradigm Of Library Service, Barton M. Clark
Library Workstations And The Changing Paradigm Of Library Service, Barton M. Clark
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
In 1645 Oxford's Bodleian Library denied Charles I the loan of a book.[l] It could be argued, that with the English Civil War well advanced, Charles I was a bad risk. On the other hand, Oxford was at the time a stronghold of partisans to the Crown. Whatever the case, just four years later Charles I was executed. I am not sure this is an example of cause and effect but it does serve to highlight how libraries have so frequently approached the question of access.
Three hundred and fifty years later access has not improved that much. A user …

Utah State University proposes to establish a center that builds on its existing institutional strength in the social science of human-environment interactions and the multitude of ways in which social and economic development conditions are linked to environmental amenities and natural resource assets. The Center for Society, Economics and the Environment (CSEE) will achieve four objectives. The Influence Of One Scholar On Another: A Citation Analysis Of Highly Cited Authors In Instructional Design And Technology, Tyler Randall Small
Theses and Dissertations
While many historical articles and chapters on the foundations of Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) have painted an accurate picture of the field, it has been 21 years since anyone has given emphasis to the relationships of influence among IDT scholars. Many have written on various elements of the field, emphasizing events according to their own experience, which have increased our overall understanding of IDT. However, without insight on the connections between these pieces, the field appears to be only a broad array of isolated silos, each filled with its own research interest. This research sought to discover IDT's genealogy …
