A Social Marketing Approach To Forest Land Conservation, Joseph Anderson May 2012

A Social Marketing Approach To Forest Land Conservation, Joseph Anderson

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

Northern York County holds some of the most ecologically diverse forests and productive timberland in the State of Maine. It is also the boundary of the Wildland-Urban Interface which continually expands resulting in the conversation of forest land for non-forest uses such as development. Land use conversion is exacerbated by an increasing number of “new” owners with little knowledge of best forestry practices who hold smaller parcels which makes developing effective conservation programs difficult. In an effort to develop conservation objectives with the purpose of protect working forest land, the Southwestern Maine Forest Fragmentation Coalition elected to utilize the outreach …

Between Utopia And Dystopia, Zhe Ren May 2012

Between Utopia And Dystopia, Zhe Ren

Student Theses and Dissertations

I watch the city. I am fascinated by the swift change and goings on of metropolitan life. I think of it as a collective performance and exemplary of basic human nature. The urban space also frightens me because it is expanding so fast that it disrupts the relationship between human civilization and the natural balance. My work is an exploration of this coexistence between humans and nature. As populations continue to expand and energy becomes rare, we find new ways to cohabitate. While creating new life forms both naturally and scientifically, humans become parasitic to their surroundings. Population growth is …

How Do We Read Comics Of The Quotidian? (Part I Of A Series), Frank Bramlett May 2012

How Do We Read Comics Of The Quotidian? (Part I Of A Series), Frank Bramlett

English Faculty Publications

In two separate posts on Pencil Panel Page, Qiana Whitted and Aaron Meskin have explored the way comics readers engage with images. (Click here to read Qiana’s post and click here to read Aaron’s.) Specifically, they engage Scott McCloud’s claim that readers identify with drawn images of human beings. To quote McCloud, “when you look at a photo or realistic drawing of a face–you see it as the face of another. But when you enter the world of the cartoon–you see yourself” (36).

My question in this post has not to do with images but rather with narrative. When …

“Double-Crossed, So To Speak": Black Female Resistance To Gendered Oppression In The South, Amolie Egloff May 2012

“Double-Crossed, So To Speak": Black Female Resistance To Gendered Oppression In The South, Amolie Egloff

Honors Theses

Despite the vast amount of research focused on slavery and the American South, studies focusing solely on the black female’s experience during this time period are a fairly recent development. In the existing literature, these women have been painted a helpless victim caught in the wrath of white men, black men, and even white women. This study presents the stories of black women courageously resisting oppression both while enslaved and just after emancipation from 1830 to 1890. The analysis of a handful of slave narratives taken by the Worker’s Progress Administration in the 1930s and 1940s established that because black …

Parental Involvement In Speech-Language Intervention, Victoria Beech Finley May 2012

Parental Involvement In Speech-Language Intervention, Victoria Beech Finley

Honors Theses

This thesis examines how parents of children who are successful in therapy are involved, from the parent’s perspective. Literature on parental involvement in therapy is limited, especially findings from the parent’s perspective. This thesis follows a phenomenological qualitative design. The investigator interviewed three mothers regarding their participation. The investigator then transcribed the interviews and cyclically analyzed them to find salient themes across all three. There were two shared themes, acceptance and emotions. It is hoped that this study will provide insight for other parents so that they can contribute to their children’s success in speech-language intervention.

Libertarian Acceptance Among The Students Of The University Of Southern Mississippi, Joseph Lebeau May 2012

Libertarian Acceptance Among The Students Of The University Of Southern Mississippi, Joseph Lebeau

Honors Theses

How can a potential libertarian portion of USM students be differentiated from the conservative and liberal segments? The most obvious method is to classify students by their respective demographic factors. Demographic categories such as gender, race, age, religion, field of study, etc. could prove to be extremely useful when attempting to identify patterns in populations. The connections between these variables and political ideology are further examined in the literature review. The demographics of a potential libertarian faction have yet to be defined, specifically at the University of Southern Mississippi. Therefore, the goal of my research will be to first locate …

Properties Of Sequential Chromospheric Brightenings And Associated Flare Ribbons, Michael S. Kirk, K. S. Balasubramaniam, Jason Jackiewicz, R. T. James Mcateer, Ryan O. Milligan

Astronomy: Faculty & Staff Publications

We report on the physical properties of solar sequential chromospheric brightenings (SCBs) observed in conjunction with moderate-sized chromospheric flares with associated Coronal mass ejections. To characterize these ephemeral events, we developed automated procedures to identify and track subsections (kernels) of solar flares and associated SCBs using high-resolution Ha images. Following the algorithmic identification and a statistical analysis, we compare and find the following: SCBs are distinctly different from flare kernels in their temporal characteristics of intensity, Doppler structure, duration, and location properties. We demonstrate that flare ribbons are themselves made up of subsections exhibiting differing characteristics. Flare kernels are measured …

This study documents the vascular plants and common lichens of the Gopher Farm sandhill, Wayne County, Mississippi. The Gopher Farm sandhill is located within the Chickasawhay Ranger District of the DeSoto National Forest and is one of the most northerly located sandhills in the Coastal Plain of Mississippi.
