Ancient Hindu Society And Eliot's Ideal Christian Society, Anita Bhela Jun 2012

Ancient Hindu Society And Eliot's Ideal Christian Society, Anita Bhela

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Ancient Hindu Society and Eliot's Ideal Christian Society" Anita Bhela examines the influence of Hindu thought and Hindu philosophy on T.S. Eliot's critical writings. In The Idea of a Christian Society Eliot gives a hypothetical account of an ideal society that would contribute towards the well-being of all its members, while in Notes towards the Definition of Culture he enumerates the essential conditions needed for the growth and survival of culture. Bhela argues that religion and culture were inseparably interrelated in Eliot's mind. She then traces similarities in the concepts of family, culture, and religion as expressed …

Duality Of Illusion And Reality In Desai's In Custody, Narinder K. Sharma Jun 2012

Duality Of Illusion And Reality In Desai's In Custody, Narinder K. Sharma

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Duality of Illusion and Reality in Desai's In Custody," Narinder K. Sharma analyses Anita Desai's internal confrontation of choices. In the novel, Desai's narration offers various options at every step and the author suggests that it becomes difficult to decide what actually should be done. The attempt is to personalize impersonal time and space thereby brings it into the domain of conflicting choices signifying an existential desire to manifest freedom. Going a step further, it can be deciphered that the individual desires to make an ideal choice to experience "authenticity"; however, the desire of making an …

Women's Worlds In The Novels Of Kandukuri And Gilman, Suneetha Rani Jun 2012

Women's Worlds In The Novels Of Kandukuri And Gilman, Suneetha Rani

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Women's Worlds in the Novels of Kandukuri and Gilman" Suneetha Rani discusses Veeresalingam Kandukuri's Satyaraja Poorvadesayatralu (Satyaraja's Travel to the Distant Lands) and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland. While the novels were published in two different contexts — one in pre-independence India and the other in pre-World War I in the U.S., one in Telugu and the other in English, one by a man and the other by a woman — there is an interesting connecting thread that brings them together. Both were satires on the contemporary male chauvinistic world. While the Telugu novel pleads for a better …

Gender Anxiety And Contemporary Indian Popular Fiction, Elen Turner Jun 2012

Gender Anxiety And Contemporary Indian Popular Fiction, Elen Turner

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Gender Anxiety and Contemporary Indian Popular Fiction" Elen Turner discusses two examples of Indian "popular literature" which reflect contemporary Indian middle-class anxieties surrounding globalization and social change. The recent proliferation of foreign business process outsourcing companies in India has changed the financial and lifestyle opportunities available to young, urban Indians. While sociological and ethnographic studies have found that workers embrace what they perceive to be westernized lifestyles, the novels under discussion present a more nuanced picture. Chetan Bhagat's One Night at the Call Centre (2005) and Shruti Saxena's Stilettos in the Boardroom (2010) demonstrate that young workers …

Status Of E-Theses Repositories With Special Reference To India, Shantashree Sengupta

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

In the past, researchers were not able to access all the scholarly literature published across the world due to lack of proper communication technologies. With the advent of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), this problem is solved to a major extent and the results of the research going throughout the world is made available to the public without any restriction. The researchers adopted Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) in 2002 and with the help of Open Access (OA) made the research literature available to the world wide user community.

The Open Access Movement

In the last few years, the …

A Conceptual Process Model For Improving Youth Science Comprehension, Peter Skelton, Brenda Seevers, Tom Dormody, Frank Hodnett Jun 2012

A Conceptual Process Model For Improving Youth Science Comprehension, Peter Skelton, Brenda Seevers, Tom Dormody, Frank Hodnett

Journal of Extension

Improving youth science comprehension in the United States is imperative to reverse current trends in student achievement and to meet an expected shortage of scientists in the future. This lag in achievement scores and need for future scientists is a problem. One challenge is to link inquiry-based learning and experiential education with curriculum designed to improve understanding, skill development, and reasoning abilities to achieve the broader impacts of improved science comprehension. The authors propose a conceptual process model for delivering Extension programs designed to enhance youth achievement in the sciences.

The Need For Accurate Prediction Equations For The Carcass Lean Content Of Pigs, Allan P. Schinckel, Clinton P. Rusk Jun 2012

The Need For Accurate Prediction Equations For The Carcass Lean Content Of Pigs, Allan P. Schinckel, Clinton P. Rusk

Journal of Extension

Prediction equations for pork carcass lean percentage are widely used in Extension, teaching, and research. Prediction equations using carcass or live animal measurements are used in carcass contests, live animal evaluation, and marketing. Fat–free lean gain is used to estimate the daily lysine requirements for pigs in swine nutrition guides. The use of inaccurate equations has substantial economic impact. Extension specialists must make the effort to confirm the accuracy of the equations they recommend for use. Standards of prediction accuracy and biases must be developed to assure that accurate equations are developed and recommended for industry use.

Taking Nature Back: Why Tax Strategy Law Is Relevant To Gene Patents, Amy E. Sestric Jun 2012

Taking Nature Back: Why Tax Strategy Law Is Relevant To Gene Patents, Amy E. Sestric

Missouri Law Review

On July 29, 2011, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld the validity of several controversial patents in Association for Molecular Pathology v. United States Patent and Trademark Office.' The patents, exclusively assigned to Myriad Genetics, Inc. (Myriad), claim two human genes fundamental to understanding, researching, and diagnosing common strains of familial breast and ovarian cancers. Patients expressed concern that Myriad's exclusivity over the two genes made diagnosis excessively expensive and precluded the availability of independent second opinion testing. Although the Supreme Court of the United States vacated and remanded the Federal Circuit's decision, the Federal …

The necessity doctrine aligns the private and the social incentive for a property possessor to take a defensive action that prevents an invasion of his property from occurring. The model described here is also applicable to self-help in contracts.

Rethinking Federal Circuit Jurisdiction, Paul Gugliuzza Jun 2012

Rethinking Federal Circuit Jurisdiction, Paul Gugliuzza

Faculty Scholarship

Thirty years ago, Congress created the Federal Circuit for the overriding purpose of bringing uniformity to patent law. Yet less than half of the court’s cases are patent cases. Most Federal Circuit cases involve veterans benefits, government-employment actions, government contracts, and other matters. Although existing literature purports to study the Federal Circuit as an institution, these projects focus largely on the court’s patent cases. This Article, by contrast, considers whether the court’s nonpatent docket might affect the development of patent law and whether the court’s specialization in patent law has consequences for how it decides nonpatent cases.

These inquiries result …

Driver Behavior Classification And Lateral Control For Automobile Safety Systems, Jing Yang May 2012

Driver Behavior Classification And Lateral Control For Automobile Safety Systems, Jing Yang

Dissertations

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have been developed to help drivers maintain stability, improve road safety, and avoid potential collision. The data acquisition equipment that can be used to measure the state and parameter information of the vehicle may not be available for a standard passenger car due to economical and technical limitations. This work focuses on developing three technologies (longitudinal tire force estimation, driver behavior classification and lateral control) using low-cost sensors that can be utilized in ADAS.

For the longitudinal tire force estimation, a low cost 1Hz positioning global system (GPS) and a steering angle sensor are used …

Instabilities In Newtonian Films And Nematic Liquid Crystal Droplets, Te-Sheng Lin May 2012

Instabilities In Newtonian Films And Nematic Liquid Crystal Droplets, Te-Sheng Lin

Dissertations

The instabilities of Newtonian films and nematic liquid crystal droplets within the framework of the long wave (lubrication) approximation are studied. For Newtonian films, it is found that, under destabilizing gravitational force, a contact line, modeled by a commonly used precursor film model, leads to free surface instabilities without any additional natural or imposed perturbations. In addition, there is a coupling between the surface instabilities and the transverse (fingering) instabilities which leads to complex behavior. All the observed phenomena are characterized by a single parameter D = (3Ca)1/3 cot α where Ca is the capillary number and …

Virtual Reality Visual Feedback And Its Effect On Brain Excitability, Soha Saleh May 2012

Virtual Reality Visual Feedback And Its Effect On Brain Excitability, Soha Saleh

Dissertations

This dissertation examines manipulation of visual feedback in virtual reality (VR) to increase excitability of distinct neural networks in the sensorimotor cortex. The objective is to explore neural responses to visual feedback of motor activities performed in complex virtual environments during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and to identify sensory manipulations that could further optimize VR rehabilitation of persons with hemiparesis. In addition, the effects of VR therapy on brain reorganization are investigated. An MRI-compatible VR system is used to provide subjects with online visual feedback of their hand movement. First, the author develops a protocol to analyze variability in …

Transport Of Terrigenous Sediment And Horseshoe Crab Eggs In The Swash Zone Of An Estuarine Foreshore In Delaware Bay, New Jersey, Usa, Sherestha Saini May 2012

Transport Of Terrigenous Sediment And Horseshoe Crab Eggs In The Swash Zone Of An Estuarine Foreshore In Delaware Bay, New Jersey, Usa, Sherestha Saini

Dissertations

Identification of processes responsible for egg exhumation and transport in the swash zone is paramount to conservation of species that use the intertidal foreshore. One example where the understanding of these processes is critical to egg exhumation, transport and deposition is in Delaware Bay, USA. Beaches in Delaware Bay provide foraging grounds to many shorebird species that migrate thousands of miles from Central and South America to feed on nutrient rich horseshoe crab eggs during their peak spawning season. Eggs laid at depth by horseshoe crabs are exhumed and transported by bioturbation, wave and swash processes and made available to …

Example Based Texture Synthesis And Quantification Of Texture Quality, Chandralekha De May 2012

Example Based Texture Synthesis And Quantification Of Texture Quality, Chandralekha De

Dissertations

Textures have been used effectively to create realistic environments for virtual worlds by reproducing the surface appearances. One of the widely-used methods for creating textures is the example based texture synthesis method. In this method of generating a texture of arbitrary size, an input image from the real world is provided. This input image is used for the basis of generating large textures. Various methods based on the underlying pattern of the image have been used to create these textures; however, the problem of finding an algorithm which provides a good output is still an open research issue. Moreover, the …

Image Statistical Frameworks For Digital Image Forensics, Patchara Sutthiwan May 2012

Image Statistical Frameworks For Digital Image Forensics, Patchara Sutthiwan

Dissertations

The advances of digital cameras, scanners, printers, image editing tools, smartphones, tablet personal computers as well as high-speed networks have made a digital image a conventional medium for visual information. Creation, duplication, distribution, or tampering of such a medium can be easily done, which calls for the necessity to be able to trace back the authenticity or history of the medium. Digital image forensics is an emerging research area that aims to resolve the imposed problem and has grown in popularity over the past decade. On the other hand, anti-forensics has emerged over the past few years as a relatively …

A Meaningful Hierarchy: How C.S. Lewis Perceives Humanity's Significance, Zachary A. Rhone May 2012

A Meaningful Hierarchy: How C.S. Lewis Perceives Humanity's Significance, Zachary A. Rhone

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016

"Humans are amphibians -- half spirit and half animal," writes Screwtape. In Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis would clarify these halves as the Bios and the Zoe -- the biological and the spiritual, respectively. Humans are, as Dr. Ransom admits in That Hideous Strength, "More. But not less" than animals, yet humanity's Fall resulted from "the idea that they could 'be like gods' -- could set up on their own as if they had created themselves -- be their own masters -- invent some sort of happiness for themselves outside God, apart from God" (MC). Humans are …

Switching Between Cooperation And Competition In Social Selection, August Guang May 2012

Switching Between Cooperation And Competition In Social Selection, August Guang

HMC Senior Theses

Roughgarden et al. (2006) proposed a theory called social selection as a behavioral game theoretic model for sexual reproduction that incorporates both competition and cooperation in 2006. Players oscillate between playing competitively to maximize their individual fitness, leading to a Nash Competitive Equilibrium, and playing cooperatively to maximize a team fitness function, leading to a Nash Bargaining Solution. Roughgarden et al. (2006) gives rates of change for both the competitive state and the cooperative state, but does not explain her rates or how to switch between the states in sufficient detail.

We test and rederive the rates, critiquing an assumption …

Analysis Of Swarm Behavior In Two Dimensions, Louis Ryan May 2012

Analysis Of Swarm Behavior In Two Dimensions, Louis Ryan

HMC Senior Theses

We investigate the steady state solutions that can exist for a two dimensional swarm of biological organisms, which have pairwise social interaction forces. The three steady states we investigate using a continuum model are a ribbon migrating swarm, a circular migrating swarm, and a milling swarm. We solve these numerically by reformulating the integral equation that arises from the continuum model as an energy minimization problem. For the ribbon migrating solution, we are able to determine an analytic solution from Carleman's equation which arises after an asymptotic expansion of the social interaction potential. Using this technique we are able to …

Russian Mathematical Pedagogy In Reasoning Mind, Maia Valcarce May 2012

Russian Mathematical Pedagogy In Reasoning Mind, Maia Valcarce

HMC Senior Theses

Reasoning Mind (RM) incorporates aspects of Russian mathematics pedagogy and curricula into its online math program. Our investigation identifies typical attributes of Russian pedagogy discussed in news articles and publications by Russian education experts, then determines how these attributes arise in RM. Analysis of RM's implementation of the characteristics reveals more successful inclusion of curricular attributes than classroom strategies. Thus, we outline classroom techniques that could be assimilated into RM to provide a more Russian learning experience along with students' exposure to Russian-style curricula.

Religiosity, Knowledge Of Evolution, And Political Ideology As Predictors Of Attitudes Towards The Evolution V. Creationism Controversy, Nikolaus Philip Schuetz May 2012

Religiosity, Knowledge Of Evolution, And Political Ideology As Predictors Of Attitudes Towards The Evolution V. Creationism Controversy, Nikolaus Philip Schuetz

Theses (6 month embargo)

Since Darwin On the Origin of Species over 150 years ago, evolution via natural selection has gained essentially unilateral support among scientists, with 97% of scientists agree that life evolved over time, while a mere 12% to 29% of the general public accepts evolution via natural selection. About three-quarters of the public support teaching creationism in public school science classes--a violation of the First Amendment--and a recent survey shows that just 28% of high school biology teachers advocating for evolution in their classroom, as per the national guidelines.

The present study aims to investigate and clarify certain relationships that lead …
