Comparative Growth And Survival Of Juvenile Atlantic Cod (Gadus Morhua)Cultured In Copper And Nylon Net Pens, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Michael D. Chambers, Jon Bunker, William Hunting Howell

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

Bio-fouling on net pens has been a major concern for the marine aquaculture industry. As cage systems increase in size, so does the surface area for the attachment of colonial organisms that create drag on the net, reduce water flow important to fish health, and increase operational expenses due to net cleaning. To solve this problem, the International Copper Association (ICA) has been developing copper alloy netting for sea cages. Copper netting has unique properties that minimize bio-fouling, reduce the risk of fish escapement, prevent predators from entering the net pen, and is recyclable. To test the alloy netting, an …

The Effect Of Sports Training In Two Different Environments On Selected Physiological, Biochemical, And Physical Variables In Wheelchair Tennis Players, Qais Jiad Khalaf Jun 2012

The Effect Of Sports Training In Two Different Environments On Selected Physiological, Biochemical, And Physical Variables In Wheelchair Tennis Players, Qais Jiad Khalaf

Modern Sport

Modern sports training science relies on various other sciences to identify the methods and approaches that athletes and teams can use to achieve significant achievements. One of these sciences focuses on the impact of the environment and its influence on sports performance, as well as on the training process. Environmental factors, especially temperature, can have a negative effect on the performance of athletes. In this context, the researcher conducted a study to explore the impact of temperature on wheelchair tennis players, specifically focusing on how this variable affects some physiological, biochemical, and physical variables. Temperature is considered a variable that …

Towards Omni-Tomography -- Grand Fusion Of Multiple Modalities For Simultaneous Interior Tomography, Ge Wang, Jie Zhang, Hao Gao, Victor Weir, Hengyong Yu, Wenxiang Cong, Xiaochen Xu, Haiou Shen, James Bennett, Mark Furth, Yue Wang, Michael Vannier

Radiology Faculty Publications

We recently elevated interior tomography from its origin in computed tomography (CT) to a general tomographic principle, and proved its validity for other tomographic modalities including SPECT, MRI, and others. Here we propose "omni-tomography", a novel concept for the grand fusion of multiple tomographic modalities for simultaneous data acquisition in a region of interest (ROI). Omni-tomography can be instrumental when physiological processes under investigation are multi-dimensional, multi-scale, multi-temporal and multi-parametric. Both preclinical and clinical studies now depend on in vivo tomography, often requiring separate evaluations by different imaging modalities. Over the past decade, two approaches have been used for multimodality …

Man Alone: An Examination Of Animal Rights, Heather M. Werner Jun 2012

Man Alone: An Examination Of Animal Rights, Heather M. Werner

Theses

This paper seeks to answer two primary questions: 1) What do we mean by rights?, and 2) How do animals fit into that rights structure? I discuss rights theory broadly, and end with the determination that Contractarianism is the only theory we can accept, if we wish to avoid metaphysical entanglements. By supplanting rationality with four criteria I develop to distinguish contracting from non-contracting agents, I am able to avoid the most serious flaws in this theory. This paper then moves on to consider how we deal with children and the cognitively impaired, inside of my developed rights structure. Using …

Lipopolysaccharide Impairs Amyloid Β Efflux From Brain: Altered Vascular Sequestration, Cerebrospinal Fluid Reabsorption, Peripheral Clearance And Transporter Function At The Blood-Brain Barrier, Michelle A. Erickson, Pehr E. Hartvigson, Yoichi Morofuji, Joshua B. Owen, D. Allan Butterfield, William A. Banks

Chemistry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Defects in the low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-1 (LRP-1) and p-glycoprotein (Pgp) clearance of amyloid beta (Aβ) from brain are thought to contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD). We have recently shown that induction of systemic inflammation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) results in impaired efflux of Aβ from the brain. The same treatment also impairs Pgp function. Here, our aim is to determine which physiological routes of Aβ clearance are affected following systemic inflammation, including those relying on LRP-1 and Pgp function at the blood-brain barrier.

METHODS: CD-1 mice aged between 6 and 8 weeks were treated with 3 intraperitoneal injections …

Localization And Functional Characterization Of The Rat Oatp4c1 Transporter In An In Vitro Cell System And Rat Tissues, Kuei-Ling Kuo, Haining Zhu, Patrick J. Mcnamara, Markos Leggas Jun 2012

Localization And Functional Characterization Of The Rat Oatp4c1 Transporter In An In Vitro Cell System And Rat Tissues, Kuei-Ling Kuo, Haining Zhu, Patrick J. Mcnamara, Markos Leggas

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The organic anion transporting polypeptide 4c1 (Oatp4c1) was previously identified as a novel uptake transporter predominantly expressed at the basolateral membrane in the rat kidney proximal tubules. Its functional role was suggested to be a vectorial transport partner of an apically-expressed efflux transporter for the efficient translocation of physiological substrates into urine, some of which were suggested to be uremic toxins. However, our in vitro studies with MDCKII cells showed that upon transfection rat Oatp4c1 polarizes to the apical membrane. In this report, we validated the trafficking and function of Oatp4c1 in polarized cell systems as well as its subcellular …

Associations Between Toenail Arsenic Concentration And Dietary Factors In A New Hampshire Ppopulation, Joann F. Gruber, Margaret R. Karagas, Diane Gilbert-Diamond, Pamela J. Bagley, M Scot Zens, Vicki Sayarath, Tracy Punshon, J Steven Morris, Kathryn L. Cottingham

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Dietary factors such as folate, vitamin B12, protein, and methionine are important for the excretion of arsenic via one-carbon metabolism in undernourished populations exposed to high levels of arsenic via drinking water. However, the effects of dietary factors on toenail arsenic concentrations in well-nourished populations exposed to relatively low levels of water arsenic are unknown.

Methods: As part of a population-based case-control study of skin and bladder cancer from the USA, we evaluated relationships between consumption of dietary factors and arsenic concentrations in toenail clippings. Consumption of each dietary factor was determined from a validated food frequency questionnaire. We …

Availability And Quality Of Vegetation Affects Reproduction Of The Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) In Improved Pastures, Anna Louise Hathaway Jun 2012

Availability And Quality Of Vegetation Affects Reproduction Of The Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) In Improved Pastures, Anna Louise Hathaway

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As part of a state-funded Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus Daudin) translocation project, I monitored actively grazed improved pastures to determine if they could serve as suitable recipient sites for the threatened Gopher Tortoise displaced by human development. For cattle ranches to be considered suitable recipient sites females must be able to acquire sufficient energy to produce a clutch of viable eggs, and sufficiently high quality vegetation must be available to support juvenile recruitment into the population. Vegetation surveys were conducted to determine the composition and percent cover of plant species, especially those containing high amounts of nutrients, specifically nitrogen. Resident …

Il-4 Engagement Of The Type 1 Il-4 Receptor Complex Enhances Mouse Eosinophil Migration To Eotaxin-1 In Vitro, Nicola M. Heller, William M. Gwinn, Raymond P. Donnelly, Stephanie L. Constant, Achsah D. Keegan

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

Background

Previous work from our laboratory demonstrated that IL-4Rα expression on a myeloid cell type was responsible for enhancement of Th2-driven eosinophilic inflammation in a mouse model of allergic lung inflammation. Subsequently, we have shown that IL-4 signaling through type I IL-4 receptors on monocytes/macrophages strongly induced activation of the IRS-2 pathway and a subset of genes characteristic of alternatively activated macrophages. The direct effect(s) of IL-4 and IL-13 on mouse eosinophils are not clear. The goal of this study was determine the effect of IL-4 and IL-13 on mouse eosinophil function.

Methods

Standard Transwell chemotaxis assay was used to …
