Parameter Synthesis For Hierarchical Concurrent Real-Time Systems, Étienne André, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong Jul 2012

Parameter Synthesis For Hierarchical Concurrent Real-Time Systems, Étienne André, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Modeling and verifying complex real-time systems, involving timing delays, are notoriously difficult problems. Checking the correctness of a system for one particular value for each delay does not give any information for other values. It is hence interesting to reason parametrically, by considering that the delays are parameters (unknown constants) and synthesize a constraint guaranteeing a correct behavior. We present here Parametric Stateful Timed CSP, a language capable of specifying hierarchical real-time systems with complex data structures. Although we prove that the synthesis is undecidable in general, we present an algorithm for efficient parameter synthesis that behaves well in practice.

Not A Partnership In Pepper, Coffee, Callico, Or Tobacco: Edmund Burke And The Vicissitudes Of Colonial Capitalism, Onur Ulas Ince Jul 2012

Not A Partnership In Pepper, Coffee, Callico, Or Tobacco: Edmund Burke And The Vicissitudes Of Colonial Capitalism, Onur Ulas Ince

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This essay examines the tensions between liberalism and capitalism through an analysis of Edmund Burke's works on eighteenth-century liberal political economy and, specifically the challenges posed by colonial capitalism. When criticizing the East India Company Burke attempted to fortify "commercial" principles, on which British self-image rested, against the "rapacious" policies of British imperialism in India, which threatened this liberal self-image. His denunciation of the Company thus can be construed as an index to broader contradictions between the liberal self-image of capitalism and the coercive processes of colonial displacement and extraction that were an integral part of capitalism's emergence. The article, …

Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Animals, Sariya Asawakarn, Tanong Asawakarn Jul 2012

Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Animals, Sariya Asawakarn, Tanong Asawakarn

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Matrix metalloproteinases are a family of calcium-dependent and zinc-dependent endopeptidases, which excrete from many cell types. These enzymes can hydrolyze extracellular matrix proteins. The most important inhibitor of MMPs is tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). The imbalance between MMPs and TIMPs causes pathological condition in human and animals. This review focuses on structural, role and several reports of MMPs in horse, dog, cat, fish and avian. Over production of MMPs is associated with tissue destruction and erosion of cartilage in equine osteoarthritis, especially MMP-2 and MMP-9. In canine and feline, many evidences reported about MMPs and cancer such as MMP-2 …

Adversarial Economics In Antitrust Litigation: Losing Academic Consensus In The Battle Of The Experts, Rebecca Haw Allensworth Jul 2012

Adversarial Economics In Antitrust Litigation: Losing Academic Consensus In The Battle Of The Experts, Rebecca Haw Allensworth

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The adversarial presentation of expert scientific evidence tends to obscure academic consensus. In the context of litigation, small, marginal disagreements can be made to seem important and settled issues can be made to appear hopelessly deadlocked. This Article explores this dynamic's effect on antitrust litigation. Modem antitrust law is steeped in microeconomics, and suits rely heavily on economic expert witnesses. Indeed, expert testimony is often the "whole game" in an antitrust dispute because experts testify about dispositive issues such as the competitive effect of a business practice or the relevant boundaries of a market. And the Supreme Court has encouraged-even …

The Pseudomonas Syringae Type Iii Secretion System: The Translocator Proteins, Their Secretion, And The Restriction Of Translocation By The Plant Immune System, Emerson Crabill Jul 2012

The Pseudomonas Syringae Type Iii Secretion System: The Translocator Proteins, Their Secretion, And The Restriction Of Translocation By The Plant Immune System, Emerson Crabill

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Pseudomonas syringae is a Gram-negative plant pathogen whose virulence is dependent upon its type III secretion system (T3SS), a nanosyringe that facilitates translocation, or injection, of type III effector (T3E) proteins into eukaryotic cells. The primary function of P. syringae T3E proteins is suppression of plant immunity. Bacterial proteins called translocators form a translocon that forms a pore in the host plasma membrane which is traversed by T3Es. HrpK1, a putative P. syringae translocator, is a type III-secreted protein important for virulence and T3E injection, but not secretion of T3Es. Harpins are a group of proteins specific to plant pathogens …

Follow The Money! Article I And Article Vi Constitutional Barriers To Renewable Energy In The U.S. Future, Steven Ferrey Jul 2012

Follow The Money! Article I And Article Vi Constitutional Barriers To Renewable Energy In The U.S. Future, Steven Ferrey

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

When one "follows the money," the current Administration‘s economic stimulus funding injected unprecedented billions of dollars into new energy-related capital investments. In doing so, it endeavors to fundamentally re-sculpt the legal fabric and infrastructure of the U.S. economy in a once-in-a-generation change of watershed proportion. However, this re-sculpting is hitting fundamental constitutional barriers under Articles I and VI.

There is a jurisdictional barrier: Renewable energy investments, promoted primarily at the state level, confront real challenges pursuant to the Constitution‘s Supremacy Clause (Article VI) and Commerce Clause (Article I). Among the most litigated constitutional issues before the U.S. Supreme Court, these …

General Allee Effect In Two-Species Population Biology, G Livadiotis, Saber Elaydi Jul 2012

General Allee Effect In Two-Species Population Biology, G Livadiotis, Saber Elaydi

Mathematics Faculty Research

The main objective of this work is to present a general framework for the notion of the strong Allee effect in population models, including competition, mutualistic, and predator–prey models. The study is restricted to the strong Allee effect caused by an inter-specific interaction. The main feature of the strong Allee effect is that the extinction equilibrium is an attractor. We show how a ‘phase space core’ of three or four equilibria is sufficient to describe the essential dynamics of the interaction between two species that are prone to the Allee effect. We will introduce the notion of semistability in planar …

Analysis Of The Fish Community On Tidal-Freshwater Constructed Reefs, Briana Langford Jul 2012

Analysis Of The Fish Community On Tidal-Freshwater Constructed Reefs, Briana Langford

Theses and Dissertations

Constructed reefs are used successfully in marine systems to enhance spawning habitat; this study examines the effectiveness of constructed reefs in a tidal-freshwater river. Fish abundance, species diversity and richness, residency, water column position, reproductive guilds, and feeding guilds were analyzed on two constructed reefs in the tidal-freshwater James River and compared to silted regions representing the primary substrate in the river. Reefs were sampled using hydroacoustics, electroshocking, gillnetting, trawling, and egg mats. The constructed reefs had a greater proportion of fish that broadcast spawn over hard substrate and a trend of more overall individual, residential, and demersal fish. The …

Design And Implementation Of The Kinect Controlled Electro-Mechanical Skeleton (K.C.E.M.S), Jason Richard Ekelmann

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Mimicking real-time human motion with a low cost solution has been an extremely difficult task in the past but with the release of the Microsoft Kinect motion capture system, this problem has been simplified. This thesis discusses the feasibility and design behind a simple robotic skeleton that utilizes the Kinect to mimic human movements in near real-time. The goal of this project is to construct a 1/3-scale model of a robotically enhanced skeleton and demonstrate the abilities of the Kinect as a tool for human movement mimicry. The resulting robot was able to mimic many human movements but was mechanically …

The Effects Of Familiarity And Persuasion On Risk Assessment, Casey L. Smith Jul 2012

The Effects Of Familiarity And Persuasion On Risk Assessment, Casey L. Smith

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Cognitive biases influence decisions and the analyses of risk. They are often derived from two separate processes: bias based on familiarity (familiarity bias) and bias as the result of influences from outside sources (persuasion bias). Research suggests that familiarity-based bias may lead to acceptance of an activity's drawbacks and a leniency of its risks.

In addition, research has tried to measure and analyze different types of biases individually, but few have compared the interactions of more than one bias at once. Because different biases may derive from different mental phenomena it is important to tease out the distinctions, and observe …

Feeding Ecology And Life History Strategies Of White-Faced Capuchin Monkeys, Elizabeth C. Eadie Jul 2012

Feeding Ecology And Life History Strategies Of White-Faced Capuchin Monkeys, Elizabeth C. Eadie

Anthropology ETDs

Dietary niches have widespread effects on individuals life histories, behaviors, and morphologies. Capuchin monkeys inhabit a complex dietary niche that often entails hunting of relatively large vertebrate prey, tool-use, and extraction of embedded resources that other closely related and sympatric species do not exploit. In this dissertation I examine, a) how juvenile capuchins overcome the challenges of reliance on a difficult-to-acquire diet, b) at what age juveniles achieve maximum foraging return rates for difficult-to-acquire foods, and c) what nutritional benefits capuchins obtain from exploitation of these foods. In the process of addressing these questions I test two prominent hypotheses regarding …

Osmoregulators Proline And Glycine Betaine Counteract Salinity Stress In Canola, Mt Sakr, Nm El-Sarkassy, Mp Fuller

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Salt inundation leads to increased salinization of arable land in many arid and semi-arid regions. Until genetic solutions are found farmers and growers must either abandon salt-affected fields or use agronomic treatments that alleviate salt stress symptoms. Here, field experiments were carried out to study the effect of the osmoregulators proline at 200 mg L-1 and glycine betaine at 400 mg L-1 in counteracting the harmful effect of soil salinity stress on canola plants grown in Egypt. We assessed growth characteristics, yield and biochemical constituents. Results show first that all growth characters decreased with increasing salinity stress but applied osmoregulators …

Research will play an important role in art and design education as the number of art and design research degree student increases. Yet ‘the relationship between creativepractical work and research protocols still remains a contentious issue’ stated Hockey. The missing link between researched theory and creative practice has been unable to develop the depth and relevance of students’ creative practice. From the perspective of Asian undergraduate studies, this paper seeks to explore students’ abilities and knowledge of research methodologies. This paper is not proposing a method or a solution to bridge the disconnection between researched theory and creative practice. But …

Stop Motion Animation As A Tool For Sketching In Architecture, Ru Zarin, Kent Lindbergh, Daniel Fallman Jul 2012

Stop Motion Animation As A Tool For Sketching In Architecture, Ru Zarin, Kent Lindbergh, Daniel Fallman

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Widely acknowledged as an archetypal design activity, sketching is typically carried out using little more than pen and paper. Today’s designed artifacts however, are often given qualities that are hard to capture with traditional means of sketching. While pen and paper sketching catches the character of a building, it may not equally well capture how that building changes with the seasons, how people pass through it, how the light moves in between its rooms from sunrise to dawn, and how its façade subtly decays over centuries. Yet, it is often exactly these dynamic and interactive aspects that are emphasized in …
