The Role Religion Plays In Attitudes Toward Euthanasia, Rezawana Chowdhury
The Role Religion Plays In Attitudes Toward Euthanasia, Rezawana Chowdhury
HIM 1990-2015
This research investigated the role religion plays in how individuals view euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. One hundred participants from each of the three major monotheistic world religions were given a seven-question survey. The seven questions consisted of statements regarding the knowledge of their own religion, how the participants feel about terminally ill patients and those who have lost vital functions, and also whether or not they believe euthanasia is morally just. It was predicted that the participants who belong to Judaism and Islam viewed euthanasia as morally just and participants who belong to the Christianity viewed euthanasia as morally incorrect.

How Can Pre-Reading Strategies Benefit Students With Disabilities?, Jennifer Markham
Education Masters
This research study sought to determine if students with disabilities benefit from pre-reading strategies in reading comprehension. Reading is a fundamental skill that supports academic achievement. Using pre-reading strategies will motivate and increase student comprehension. In an effort to influence students with disabilities, the concept of pre-reading strategies was introduced to a group of middle school students. Some pre-reading strategies included selecting interesting texts, graphic organizers, vocabulary instruction, visual representations, and the activation of prior knowledge. Findings have shown that pre-reading strategies influence student motivation, increase the activation of prior knowledge and they can be used as a tool for …
Business Plan For A Commercial Teff Farm In Ethiopia, Ephrem Teklu Phifer-Houseman
Business Plan For A Commercial Teff Farm In Ethiopia, Ephrem Teklu Phifer-Houseman
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
This senior project was undertaken to determine the feasibility of creating a profitable farm in Ethiopia using commercial farming methods in order to raise the standard of living for Ethiopian subsistence farmers and improve food security in Ethiopia. Initially, a farmer’s cooperative was the model proposed for this farm. However, further research into the realities of Ethiopian agribusiness and the difficulties smallholder farmers face in obtaining capital, along with in-depth financial analysis called for a modification of the business model. Consequently, this senior project discusses the design and delineation of a business plan for a privately-held, commercial, teff grain farm …
Generation Of Tanapoxvirus Ankyrin Repeat Gene Deletion Mutant For Evaluating Its Role In Cell Tropism, Yogesh Suryawanshi
Generation Of Tanapoxvirus Ankyrin Repeat Gene Deletion Mutant For Evaluating Its Role In Cell Tropism, Yogesh Suryawanshi
Masters Theses
The host range of poxviruses is highly regulated and is limited to certain hosts. A number of genes in different poxviruses have been identified that contribute to cell tropism. The ankyrin (ANK) repeat genes encode for proteins characterized by the repetitive motifs in its amino acid sequence. These genes have been found to play a role in determining the ability of poxviruses to replicate in certain cell types. Tanapoxvirus (TPV) Kenya genome analysis indicated the presence of six ANK repeat genes of which T146R, T147R and T148R are present in the terminal part of the TPV-Kenya genome. To understand the …

Why do some women pursue relationships with men who are attractive, dominant, and charming but who do not want to be in relationships—the prototypical sexy cad? Previous research shows that women have an increased desire for such men when they are ovulating, but it is unclear why ovulating women would think it is wise to pursue men who may be unfaithful and could desert them. Using both college-age and community-based samples, in 3 studies we show that ovulating women perceive charismatic and physically attractive men, but not reliable and nice men, as more committed partners and more devoted future fathers. …

The Real-Time Measurements Of Blood Nitric Oxide (No) And Hydrogen Peroxide (H2o2) Levels Under Acute Hyperglycemia, Michael Minni
The Real-Time Measurements Of Blood Nitric Oxide (No) And Hydrogen Peroxide (H2o2) Levels Under Acute Hyperglycemia, Michael Minni
PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship
Vascular endothelial dysfunction is one of the earliest recognizable events under hyperglycemic conditions. It is characterized by decreased endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability and increased oxidative stress, such as superoxide and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) overproduction. However, the real-time changes in blood NO and H2O2 levels under acute hyperglycemia have not been evaluated. In this study, acute hyperglycemia (200 mg/dl, 400 mg/dL, and 600 mg/dL) was induced by intravenous infusion of 20%, 30%, and 50% D-glucose respectively for 180 min. Infusion of saline or 30% L-glucose serve as controls. Blood NO or H2 …
Modeling Of Cellular Automata And Agent-Based Complex Systems, Sara Pallekonda
Modeling Of Cellular Automata And Agent-Based Complex Systems, Sara Pallekonda
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The term 'complex systems' may sound terrifying whenever you come across it as it depicts an overall collective structure which indeed can live up to its name; but when you comprehend the system at its fundamental level by stripping to its simpler multiple- interacting individual parts, the insights it provides may be used to describe and understand different problems ranging from atomic particles to the economics of societies and evolution. The simple laws can be used to simulate the behaviors of disparate complex systems.
In this thesis, a brief study is done emulating few such complex systems through programming techniques …
Frequency-Specificity And Pattern-Specificity Of The Buildup Of Auditory Stream Segregation, David Michael Weintraub
Frequency-Specificity And Pattern-Specificity Of The Buildup Of Auditory Stream Segregation, David Michael Weintraub
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
During repeating sequences of low (A) and high (B) tones in an "...ABAB..." pattern, the likelihood of hearing two separate streams ("streaming") increases with more repetitions of the patterns, a phenomenon referred to as "buildup". Previous studies have shown that buildup is frequency specific (Anstis & Saida, 1985) and that its biasing effects decays over several seconds (Beauvois & Meddis, 1997). No study has examined whether the frequency specificity of buildup persists for such a long duration. To address these issues, Experiment 1 tested the decay of frequency-specific and non-frequency specific buildup. The results revealed that (1) frequency-specific buildup effects …
Mine Detection Rats: Effects Of Repeated Extinction On Detection Rates, Amanda M. Mahoney
Mine Detection Rats: Effects Of Repeated Extinction On Detection Rates, Amanda M. Mahoney
Dissertations
In recent years, giant African pouched rats (Cricetomys gambianus) have been used successfully for detecting landmines in Mozambique. The rats are trained to detect mines through the use of operant conditioning techniques, in which the indicator response (stopping and digging) is rewarded (reinforced) with food when it occurs within one meter of a landmine and not rewarded when it occurs under other circumstances. Because handlers do not know the location of landmines when the rats are used operationally, and therefore cannot ascertain if an indication response is correct (near a mine) or incorrect, no rewards are delivered in …
Regulation Of Expression Of Enterohemolysin Toxin By The Global Repressor Hns And Characterization Of A New Class Of Protein Produced By Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia Coli, Miles T. Rogers
Dissertations
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are worldwide pathogens causing an estimated 200,000 infections per year in the United States. Infections with STEC sometimes progress to kidney failure ending in death. Two studies presented below describe a novel virulence factor and mechanisms required for pathogenesis of STEC seropathotype 091 :H21.
First the novel protein, YghJ, was identified and found to be conserved amongst extraintestinal and diarrheal seropathotypes of E. coli with similar proteins carried by pathogens such as Vibrio cholerae. When the yghJ gene was disrupted creating a YghJ null mutant, the defect resulted in a significant growth deficiency in …
Analysis Of The Effect Of Feeding Regimen On Gh/Igf Axis In Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Samantha Puckett
Analysis Of The Effect Of Feeding Regimen On Gh/Igf Axis In Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Samantha Puckett
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) are the most widely farmed aquatic animal in the United States. Assessing the effect of feeding regimens on their overall growth requires grow-out trials and a subsequent inefficient use of time and money. The growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) axis regulates growth based upon environmental factors such as feed intake in many teleost fish species. In order to increase the efficiency of aquaculture, the components of the GH/IGF-1 axis might be used as endocrine biomarkers to evaluate instantaneous growth rate. The goal of this study was to better understand the effects of feeding regimen on …

Fast And Efficient Classification, Tracking, And Simulation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Hao Jiang
Fast And Efficient Classification, Tracking, And Simulation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Hao Jiang
All Dissertations
Wireless sensor networks are composed of large numbers of resource-lean sensors that collect low-level inputs from the physical world. The applications present challenges for programmers. On the one hand, lightweight algorithms are required given the limited capacity of the constituent devices. On the other, the algorithms must be scalable to accommodate large networks. In this thesis, we focus on the design and implementation of fast and lean (yet scalable) algorithms for classification, simulation, and target tracking in the context of wireless sensor networks. We briefly consider each of these challenges in turn.
The first challenge is to achieve high precision …

The Effectiveness Of Distance Delivery Studios In Interior Design Education, Tracy A. Fichera
The Effectiveness Of Distance Delivery Studios In Interior Design Education, Tracy A. Fichera
Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity
Technology has affected the way in which we live and work and many Interior Design programs have transitioned at least a portion of their curriculum to an online format; however, for many reasons most have been hesitant to convert the studio. One concern many faculty have is that distance education cannot facilitate the same environment or provide the individualized attention that face-to-face studio offers. In this study, the effectiveness of distance delivery studio courses in interior design education will be explored to find out if they can be as successful as face-to-face studio courses. Standards set forth by the Council …

Deepwater, Deep Ties, Deep Trouble: A State-Corporate Environmental Crime Analysis Of The 2010 Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill, Elizabeth A. Bradshaw
Dissertations
The 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill was one of the worst environmental disasters of all time. Using the concept of state-corporate environmental crime, this project applies a case study analysis of secondary data sources including publicly available government reports, corporate documents, academic sources and journalistic accounts to examine the causes of the blowout and the response to the spill. Building on Michalowski and Kramer’s Integrated Theoretical Model of State-Corporate Crime, this study introduces an additional level of analysis- that of the industry- between the organizational and institutional levels.
The causes of the Deepwater Horizon explosion are rooted both in …
The Effects Of Repeated Resurgence Conditions On The Magnitude Of Resurgence, Ryan Nathaniel Redner
The Effects Of Repeated Resurgence Conditions On The Magnitude Of Resurgence, Ryan Nathaniel Redner
Dissertations
Resurgence is defined as the recurrence of a previously reinforced behavior, under the condition that reinforcer delivery ceases for a more recently reinforced behavior. The current study investigated the effect of repeating the resurgence procedure six times with pigeons and two times with rats to determine the effect of repetitions on the magnitude of resurgence. Three phases were repeated: (a) Response 1 was reinforced while there were no programmed consequences for Response 2, (b) Response 2 was reinforced and Response 1 was extinguished, and finally (c) there were no programmed consequences for either response. The results indicated that the magnitude …
Describing The Apprenticeship Of Chemists Through The Language Of Faculty Scientists, Brandy Ann Skjold
Describing The Apprenticeship Of Chemists Through The Language Of Faculty Scientists, Brandy Ann Skjold
Dissertations
Attempts to bring authentic science into the K-16 classroom have led to the use of sociocultural theories of learning, particularly apprenticeship, to frame science education research. Science educators have brought apprenticeship to science classrooms and have brought students to research laboratories in order to gauge its benefits. The assumption is that these learning opportunities are representative of the actual apprenticeship of scientists. However, there have been no attempts in the literature to describe the apprenticeship of scientists using apprenticeship theory. Understanding what science apprenticeship looks like is a critical component of translating this experience into the classroom. This study sought …
Evaluation Of Growing Media For Annual Herb Production In Green Roof Modular Trays, Mary Margaret Fischer
Evaluation Of Growing Media For Annual Herb Production In Green Roof Modular Trays, Mary Margaret Fischer
Theses
Extensive urban development has led to the resurgence of green roofs. These vegetated roofs provide significant ecological and economic benefits including mitigation of the urban heat island effect, reduced storm-water runoff, lower energy costs, increased biodiversity, and improved aesthetics, as well as food production and security. Urban agriculture and food security are becoming increasingly important factors of the green roof renaissance. Due to weight load limitations of potential buildings, the ability to produce quality food in shallow media, less than 6.75 cm, could encourage green roof food production. The effectiveness of a commercially available green roof media and a vermicompost …

Pivotal Role Of Interleukin-10 On Microrna-155 Expression In Regulation Of The Monocyte Response In Hypothermia., Adrian Theophil Billeter 1984-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project investigated the effect of hypothermia on the monocyte response with the goal of understanding, which intracellular processes are affected by hypothermia leading to differences in cytokine secretion. A better understanding of the effects of hypothermia on the regulation of monocyte responses would allow targeted interventions and may reduce complications and death in hypothermic surgical patients. We found the following results: 1. The three major pro-inflammatory signaling pathways, Nuclear Factor Kß, p38 and c-Jun N-terminal-Kinase (JNK) of the Mitogen Activated Protein Kinases pathway, have increased and prolonged activation with hypothermia (32°C). The extracellular signal-related kinase (Erk) pathway shows increased …

Rethinking Human And Nonhuman Animal Relations In J. M. Coetzee's Elizabeth Costello (2003)., Rodrigo Martini Paula
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For the past four decades, scholarship on the relationship between human and nonhuman animals has been growing inside the academy and sprouting ontological and epistemological concerns about the status of the Humanities as an institution. Between 1997 and 2003, South-African author and Nobel Laureate J. M. Coetzee created Elizabeth Costello, an Australian writer that delivers lectures at certain universities and causes controversy when addressing the nature of animal rights movements. This work aims at analyzing the situations in which Coetzee uses Costello to speak about the cruelty to nonhuman animals. What I argue is that in entering the conversation through …
