Toward The Printed World: Additive Manufacturing And Implications For National Security, Connor M. Mcnulty, Neyla Arnas, Thomas A. Campbell

Defense Horizons

This paper looks at the rapid advancement of additive manufacturing (3D printing) and its implications for national security. As the technology becomes more affordable and widely accessible, it enables the production of complex components ranging from industrial materials to biomedical applications. Additive manufacturing can enhance military effectiveness by reducing production time, cost, weight, and logistical burdens while enabling on-demand, customized manufacturing. At the same time, the proliferation of this technology presents challenges, as adversaries and non-state actors may gain access to similar capabilities, raising legal, regulatory, and security concerns. The paper stresses the need for policymakers to anticipate both the …

The Erotic Conception Of Ancient Greek Landscapes And The Heterotopia Of The Symposium, Jo Heirman Sep 2012

The Erotic Conception Of Ancient Greek Landscapes And The Heterotopia Of The Symposium, Jo Heirman

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Erotic Conception of Ancient Greek Landscapes and the Heterotopia of the Symposium" Jo Heirman discusses the conception of natural landscapes in ancient Greek lyric poetry from the seventh until the fifth century BC and its ideological background. Heirman analyzes lyric poems by Sappho, Ibycus, and Theognis in which landscapes of fields, gardens, and meadows are presented. Heirman's analysis reveals a recurrent erotic pattern in the conception of ancient Greek landscapes constructed as places which suggest various forms of eroticism ranging from lesbian desire to homosexuality. Further, Heirman discusses the preoccupation with eroticism by suggesting a connection …

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Populations of many shorebird species appear to be declining in North America, and food resources at stopover habitats may limit migratory bird populations. We investigated body condition of, and foraging habitat and diet selection by 4 species of shorebirds in the central Illinois River valley during fall migrations 2007 and 2008 (Killdeer [Charadrius vociferus], Least Sandpiper [Calidris minutilla], Pectoral Sandpiper [Calidris melanotos], and Lesser Yellowlegs [Tringa flavipes]). All species except Killdeer were in good to excellent condition, based on size-corrected body mass and fat scores. Shorebird diets were dominated by invertebrate taxa from Orders Diptera and Coleoptera. Additionally, Isopoda, Hemiptera, …

Landscape, Culture, And Education In Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert Sep 2012

Landscape, Culture, And Education In Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Landscape, Culture, and Education in Defoe's Robinson Crusoe" Geert Vandermeersche and Ronald Soetaert discuss Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe as a narrative that translates nature and our dealings with it into a literary text. Vandeermeersche and Soetaert postulate that the novel can be read as a quintessential fable of humans' cultivation of nature and the creation of individuality, which, at the same time, provides its readers with strategies for describing processes such as education. Robinson Crusoe and its characters, metaphors, and scenarios function in the "auto-communication" of culture as an enduring equipment for living (Burke), a company …

Tell-Tale Landscapes And Mythical Chronotopes In Urban Designs For Twenty-First Century Paris, Bart Keunen, Sofie Verraest

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Tell-tale Landscapes and Mythical Chronotopes in Urban Designs for Twenty-first Century Paris" Bart Keunen and Sofie Verraest outline a methodology for the examination of narrative structures projected onto landscapes and exemplify it by analyzing four urbanist projects submitted for the international workshop for Greater Paris launched by President of France Nicholas Sarkozy in 2009. Keunen and Verraest focus on phantasmagorical urban spaces considered to be profane remnants of what Ernst Cassirer referred to as "mythical thought." Since the spatiotemporal structure of these phantasmagorical places is understood as fundamental to their affective appeal and seductiveness, they are treated …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Canine urinary incontinence is commonly encountered in small animal veterinary practice with highprevalence in spayed female dogs. The diagnosis of neutering-induced urinary incontinence is usually based onclinical signs, history and elimination of other possible diagnoses. The proposed predispositions to incontinence thatfollows neutering including gender, breed, body weight, obesity, tail docking, spaying technique (ovariectomy andovariohysterectomy) and morphology of the LUT, e.g. the position of neck of the bladder and urethral length, have allbeen investigated. At present, the exact underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. However, it is widelyagreed that the condition is multi-factorial and hormone-associated. The role of gonadotrophin LH and …

Common Respiratory Issues In Ambulatory Obstetrics., Kelly M Orzechowski, Richard C Miller Sep 2012

Common Respiratory Issues In Ambulatory Obstetrics., Kelly M Orzechowski, Richard C Miller

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers

This article reviews the diagnosis and management of the most common respiratory conditions complicating pregnancy--asthma and influenza. We also review strategies for smoking cessation in pregnancy as, in addition to exacerbating all other pulmonary conditions, smoking is the most modifiable risk factor for poor pregnancy outcome. Moreover, the obstetrician frequently encounters each of these conditions in the ambulatory setting. A thorough knowledge of the normal pregnancy-induced physiological respiratory changes combined with a comprehensive understanding of how to manage these conditions, will provide the obstetrician with the armamentarium needed to optimize health outcomes for mothers and their fetuses.

Differential Expression Patterns Of Proteins Involved In Epidermal Proliferation And Differentiation In Canine Atopic Dermatitis, Sirin Theerawatanasirikul, Achariya Sailasuta, Roongroje Thanawongnuwech, Tossaporn Nakbed, Komkrid Charngkaew, Gunnaporn Suriyaphol Sep 2012

Differential Expression Patterns Of Proteins Involved In Epidermal Proliferation And Differentiation In Canine Atopic Dermatitis, Sirin Theerawatanasirikul, Achariya Sailasuta, Roongroje Thanawongnuwech, Tossaporn Nakbed, Komkrid Charngkaew, Gunnaporn Suriyaphol

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The pathological alterations in skin keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation in canine atopic dermatitis(CAD) were investigated in 20 small breed dogs with CAD (10 of which displayed lesional CAD skin and 10 nonlesionalCAD skin) and 11 healthy control animals. Biopsy of lesional CAD skin showed orthokeratotichyperkeratosis. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) of Ki-67, a cellular marker for proliferation, showed a higher epidermalcell proliferation rate in the CAD dogs (p< 0.05) which positively correlated with Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent andSeverity Index, CADESI-03 (p< 0.01). IHC labeling indicated reduced expression of cornified envelope proteins, involucrin (IVL) and filaggrin (FLG) in both lesional and non-lesional skin (p< 0.05). In contrast, expression oflympho-epithelial Kazal-type inhibitor (LEKTI), which has been reported to inhibit proteases that cleave proFLG intoFLG, was increased in lesional skin compared to the normal controls (p< 0.05). The IHC results showed a positivecorrelation between CADESI-03 and LEKTI expression and a negative correlation between CADESI-03 and IVLexpression. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates that epidermal hyperkeratosis in CAD is related todisturbance of both epidermal proliferation and cornified envelope differentiation. This is the first report of acorrelation of LEKTI with CAD.

Forecasting The Effect Of The Amethyst Initiative On College Drinking, Ben G. Fitzpatrick, Richard Scribner, Azmy S. Ackleh, Jawaid Rasul, Geoffrey Jacquez, Neal Simonsen, Robert Rommel

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Background

A number of college presidents have endorsed the Amethyst Initiative, a call to consider lowering the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA). Our objective is to forecast the effect of the Amethyst Initiative on college drinking.

Methods

A system model of college drinking siumlates MLDA changes through (1) a decrease in heavy episodic drinking (HED) due to the lower likelihood of students drinking in unsupervised settings where they model irresponsible drinking (misperception), and (2) an increase in overall drinking among currently underage students due to increased social availability of alcohol (wetness).

Results

For the proportion of HEDs on campus, effects …

Non-Photoperiodic Regulation Of Reproductive Physiology In The Flexibly Breeding Pine Siskin (Spinus Pinus), Heather E. Watts, Thomas P. Hahn

Biology Faculty Works

In order to time reproduction to coincide with favorable conditions, animals use environmental cues to up- and down-regulate the reproductive axis appropriately. Although photoperiodic cues are one of the best studied of such environmental cues, animals also attend to others such as temperature, food availability, rainfall and social cues. Such non-photic cues are expected to be particularly important for tropical species and temperate-zone species that exhibit flexible or opportunistic breeding schedules. In this study, we investigate the use of non-photic cues, specifically food availability and social cues, to time the initiation of reproductive development in the pine siskin (Spinus …

Zoonotic Parasites Of Bobcats Around Human Landscapes, Scott Carver, Andrea V. Scorza, Sarah N. Bevins, Seth P. D. Riley, Kevin R. Crooks, Sue Vandewoude, Michael R. Lappin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We analyzed Lynx rufus fecal parasites from California and Colorado, hypothesizing that bobcats shed zoonotic parasites around human landscapes. Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium, Ancylostoma, Uncinaria, and Toxocara cati were shed. Toxoplasma gondii serology demonstrated exposure. Giardia and Cryptosporidium shedding increased near large human populations. Genotyped Giardia may indicate indirect transmission with humans.

Rosette Iron Deficiency Transcript And Microrna Profiling Reveals Links Between Copper And Iron Homeostasis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Brian M. Waters, Samuel A. Mcinturf, Ricardo J. Stein

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Iron (Fe) is an essential plant micronutrient, and its deficiency limits plant growth and development on alkaline soils. Under Fe deficiency, plant responses include up-regulation of genes involved in Fe uptake from the soil. However, little is known about shoot responses to Fe deficiency. Using microarrays to probe gene expression in Kas-1 and Tsu-1 ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana, and comparison with existing Col-0 data, revealed conserved rosette gene expression responses to Fe deficiency. Fe-regulated genes included known metal homeostasis-related genes, and a number of genes of unknown function. Several genes responded to Fe deficiency in both roots and rosettes. …

Epstein-Barr Virus Associated Smooth Muscle Tumors. Synchronous Liver And Lung Involvement, Noof A. Alabdulqader, Mohammad M. Yousef, Kurt D. Bernacki, Mousa A. Al-Abbadi

Saudi Medical Journal

Epstein-Barr virus associated smooth muscle tumors (EBV-SMT) are rare neoplasms that can occur in various anatomical locations. They mainly affect immunocompromised patients, and their clinical presentation is variable depending on size and organ involvement. They can pose diagnostic challenges, therefore if they are not considered in the differential diagnosis, they can be definitely misdiagnosed. Synchronous and multifocal involvement has been reported. Although malignant behavior maybe rarely seen; most behave in a benign fashion with favorable clinical outcome. We herein report an unusual case of synchronous EBV-SMT that occurred in the lung and liver in a 44-year-old female patient 7 years …
