The Importance Of The Rare: The Role Of Background Symbiodinium In The Response Of Reef Corals To Environmental Change, Rachel N. Silverstein Dec 2012

The Importance Of The Rare: The Role Of Background Symbiodinium In The Response Of Reef Corals To Environmental Change, Rachel N. Silverstein

Open Access Dissertations

Reef ecosystems throughout much of the tropics are predicted to decline in coral cover and diversity as a result of ongoing climate change (ocean acidification, temperature increases, sea level rise), disease, pollution, and overfishing. Corals may be able to respond to some of these stressors by associating with diverse algal symbionts (Symbiodinium spp.) which vary in their physiological traits and therefore expand corals’ realized niche space. This dissertation used high-sensitivity molecular techniques to investigate the presence and functional role of "background" or "rare" Symbiodinium, which occur at low abundance, and therefore may not be detected using standard molecular methods. First, …

Mechanisms Of Nmnat/Wlds Mediated Axon Protection, Brandon M. Kitay Dec 2012

Mechanisms Of Nmnat/Wlds Mediated Axon Protection, Brandon M. Kitay

Open Access Dissertations

Neurodegeneration is a hallmark of several inherited and acquired diseases of the nervous system. Though great attention in the past has been given to understanding and mitigating neuron loss in these diseases, efforts at targeting neuron cell body death pathways have yielded modest success in preventing or delaying disease onset. Often preceding neuronal death, axon degeneration is a common pathological feature of many neurodegenerative processes, and may therefore provide a therapeutic target upstream of neuronal loss. Though formerly believed to be a passive process, recent observations concerning the destruction of distal axons following transection, referred to as “Wallerian degeneration” (WD), …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

A disintegrin-like metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs-16 (Adamts16) is an important candidate gene for hypertension. The goal of the present study was to further assess the candidacy of Adamts16 by targeted disruption of this gene in a rat genetic model of hypertension. A rat model was generated by manipulating the genome of the Dahl Salt-sensitive (S) rat using zinc-finger nucleases, wherein the mutant rat had a 17 bp deletion in the first exon of Adamts16, introducing a stop codon in the transcript. Systolic blood pressure (BP) of the homozygous Adamts16(mutant) rats was lower by 36 mmHg compared with the BP of …

Monolingual And Bilingual Development And Autism Spectrum Disorder, Tayler Finsel Dec 2012

Monolingual And Bilingual Development And Autism Spectrum Disorder, Tayler Finsel

Honors Projects

The number of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from bilingual families continues to increase. With 1 in 88 children receiving a diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum, it is important to expand upon current research. This present research study surveyed caregivers regarding their perceptions and experiences of raising a child on the autism spectrum in a bilingual language environment. Information on how families are counseled regarding bilingualism and language development in ASD is limited. Caregivers often find themselves receiving conflicting advice from professionals about whether or not to incorporate bilingualism into the life of their child with ASD; …

Family Science: An Ethnographic Case Study Of The Ordinary Science And Literacy Experiences Of One Family, Glenda Margaret Mccarty Dec 2012

Family Science: An Ethnographic Case Study Of The Ordinary Science And Literacy Experiences Of One Family, Glenda Margaret Mccarty

Dissertations

Despite the copious research available on science learning, little is known about ways in which the public engages in free-choice science learning and even fewer studies have focused on how families engage in science to learn about the world around them. The same was true about studies of literacy development in the home until the 1980s when researchers (e.g. Bissex, 1980; Heath, 1983; Taylor, 1983) began documenting the literacy happenings and practices of young children in natural settings. Findings from intensive emergent literacy research studies have challenged traditional approaches to the teaching and learning of literacy, especially drawing attention to …

Genomic And Physiological Footprint Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill On Resident Marsh Fishes, Andrew Whitehead, Benjamin Dubansky, Charlotte Bodinier, Tzintzuni I. Garcia, Scott Miles, Chet Pilley, Vandana Raghunathan, Jennifer L. Roach, Nan Walker, Ronald B. Walter, Charles D. Rice, Fernando Galvez

Faculty Publications

The biological consequences of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill are unknown, especially for resident organisms. Here, we report results from a field study tracking the effects of contaminating oil across space and time in resident killifish during the first 4 mo of the spill event. Remote sensing and analytical chemistry identified exposures, which were linked to effects in fish characterized by genome expression and associated gill immunohistochemistry, despite very low concentrations of hydrocarbons remaining in water and tissues. Divergence in genome expression coincides with contaminating oil and is consistent with genome responses that are predictive of exposure to hydrocarbon-like chemicals …

Tremulous Jaw Movements Induced By The Vmat2 Inhibitor Tetrabenazine, Samantha J. Podurgiel Dec 2012

Tremulous Jaw Movements Induced By The Vmat2 Inhibitor Tetrabenazine, Samantha J. Podurgiel

Master's Theses

Parkinsonism is a movement disorder characterized by several cardinal motor symptoms: resting tremor, akinesia, bradykinesia, rigidity, and postural instability. Parkinsonian resting tremor can be modeled in rodents using the tremulous jaw movement model. Tremulous jaw movements (TJMs) are defined as “rapid vertical deflections of the lower jaw that resemble chewing but are not directed at any particular stimulus.” TJMs occur in a frequency range of 3-7 Hz and are induced by a number of pharmacological manipulations that parallel those seen in human Parkinsonism including dopamine (DA) depleting agents, DA antagonists, and cholinomimetic administration. Additionally, TJMs can be attenuated using antiparkinsonian …

An Evaluation Of Electronic Annotated Readers For First Graders In Chinese Dual Immersion To Improve Reading Comprehension And Character Recognition, James H. Cloe Jr. Dec 2012

An Evaluation Of Electronic Annotated Readers For First Graders In Chinese Dual Immersion To Improve Reading Comprehension And Character Recognition, James H. Cloe Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This study is an evaluation of online annotated readers developed for first grade students enrolled in Chinese immersion. The electronic readers were created to provide additional input to immersion students, who had little time in class for Chinese character reinforcement. The students accessed online readers from their homes and took assessments before and after each reader to test for improved character comprehension. In addition, students were divided into treatment and control groups. The treatment group had annotated electronic readers with audio and games. Conversely, the control group did not have annotations but audio was included. Results demonstrate a significant difference …

The Effect Of The Semantic Depth Of Spanish Verbs On Processing Demands Of Filler-Gap Relationships In Noun Clauses, Ashlee Marie Jessen Dec 2012

The Effect Of The Semantic Depth Of Spanish Verbs On Processing Demands Of Filler-Gap Relationships In Noun Clauses, Ashlee Marie Jessen

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the relationship between syntax and semantics in an effort to provide evidence against a strict theory of the Autonomy of Syntax. The evidence was provided by an acceptability survey given to 20 native, adult Mexicans who ranked both declarative and wh-questions which manifested a filler-gap relationship where the gap was located in an embedded noun clause. The main verbs were controlled for semantic depth by being ranked within verbal categories according to external evidence of markedness or semantic depth. The primary hypothesis was that semantically deeper verbs would add to the already increased strain on working memory …

"The River Duddon" And William Wordsworth's Evolving Poetics Of Collection, Shannon Melee Stimpson Dec 2012

"The River Duddon" And William Wordsworth's Evolving Poetics Of Collection, Shannon Melee Stimpson

Theses and Dissertations

Despite its impact in generating a more positive reception toward Wordsworth's work among his contemporaries, The River Duddon volume has received comparatively little critical attention in recent scholarship. On some level, this is unsurprising given the relative unpopularity of Wordsworth's later work among modern readers, but I believe that the relative shortage of critical scholarship on The River Duddon is due, at least in part, to a symptomatic failure to read the volume in its entirety. This essay takes up the challenge of following Wordsworth's directive to read The River Duddon volume as a unified whole. While I cannot account …

Marriage Pluralism, Family Law Jurisdiction, And Sex Equality In The United States, Linda C. Mcclain Dec 2012

Marriage Pluralism, Family Law Jurisdiction, And Sex Equality In The United States, Linda C. Mcclain

Faculty Scholarship

In many regions of the world, rights guaranteed under the civil law, including rights to gender equality within marriage and rights in the distribution of family property and child custody upon divorce, are in conflict with the principles of religious law. Women's rights issues are often at the heart of these tensions, which present pressing challenges for theorists, lawyers, and policymakers. This anthology brings together leading scholars and activists doing innovative work in Jewish law, Muslim law, Christian law, and African customary law. Using examples drawn from a variety of nations and religions, they interrogate the utility of recent theoretical …

Agrarian Reform And Rural Reconstruction In The Philippines = 菲律宾土地改革与农村重建, Isagani R. Serrano Dec 2012

Agrarian Reform And Rural Reconstruction In The Philippines = 菲律宾土地改革与农村重建, Isagani R. Serrano

South South Forum 南南論壇

Agrarian reform is at the heart of rural reconstruction and both are essential to achieving sustainable development. It includes not only land redistribution but also empowerment of peasants as key actors in building the rural economy. Land is not only an asset to be owned and accessed but also as a natural resource with multiple uses for both economic development and protection of ecosystems. Land ownership has hitherto been a centerpiece question in Philippine development, indeed, in nation building. Land monopoly on one side and landlessness on the other have defined to a large extent the history and political economy …

Workplace Bullying And Ethical Leadership, David Yamada Dec 2012

Workplace Bullying And Ethical Leadership, David Yamada

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

In order to increase business productivity, benefit packages and other financial incentives might not be adequate. Rather, the focus upon common respect for — and decent treatment of — all workers is discussed, with primary emphasis given to the endemic workplace problem of worker harassment. Simple courtesies, genuine team and individual service acknowledgement, and the dismantling of a counterproductive, hierarchical worker system, often lead to increased productivity, congenial relationships, and a happier and healthier worker.

Pin (Fibula), Risd Museum, Boris Bally, Jonathan Migliori Dec 2012

Pin (Fibula), Risd Museum, Boris Bally, Jonathan Migliori

Channel

This fibula (pin), used for closing or securing garments, is a masterpiece of ancient gold-working. Tiny animals and figures, mythical and real, cover the pin. They were formed using tiny beads of gold (a process called granulation) fashioned in a fluid, curving style reminiscent of pottery of the seventh century BCE, when the Etruscans reached the height of their technical virtuosity in granulation. In the center of the decoration is a figure common in Etruscan art: the ‘master of the beasts,’ a winged man with two faces. The figure originated in the Near East and became especially prominent in Etruscan …

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

A primary cause of morbidity and mortality following cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) is respiratory compromise, regardless of the level of trauma. In particular, SCI at mid-cervical regions targets degeneration of both descending bulbospinal respiratory axons and cell bodies of phrenic motor neurons, resulting in deficits in the function of the diaphragm, the primary muscle of inspiration. Contusion-type trauma to the cervical spinal cord is one of the most common forms of human SCI; however, few studies have evaluated mid-cervical contusion in animal models or characterized consequent histopathological and functional effects of degeneration of phrenic motor neuron-diaphragm circuitry. We have …

Inequity Aversion: Do Rats Get Jealous?, Hannah Douglas

Honors Projects

It is well known that humans have the capacity to prefer certain rewards over others. This idea has been studied in animals and is considered the relative reward processing theory. Research conducted on primates and rodents have found that they form an opinion on, and behave according to the relative magnitude of a reward compared to others (Cromwell, Hasani, & Schultz, 2005; Onge, Chiu, & Floresco, 2010). It is also accepted experience the emotion of jealousy in response to many different situations including uneven reward payoff. It has been theorized that some nonhuman animals including primates and domestic dogs are …
