Zooveillance: Foucault Goes To The Zoo, Irus Braverman
Zooveillance: Foucault Goes To The Zoo, Irus Braverman
Journal Articles
The last three decades have witnessed a dramatic shift in the governance of North American zoo animals. During this period, captive animal administration has transformed from a materially, geographically, and technologically limited enterprise - focused on the control of individual zoo animals within specific institutions - into an ambitious collective project that encompasses all accredited North American zoos and that governs more than a million zoo animals. Tapping into a sophisticated voluntary and collaborative self-monitored administration, zoos have been able to rely upon genetics and demography to achieve the ultimate goal of captive animal conservation. This essay frames this story …

Protective antigen (PA), lethal factor, and edema factor, the protein toxins of Bacillus anthracis, are among its most important virulence factors and play a key role in infection. We performed a virtual ligand screen of a library of 10000 members to identify compounds predicted to bind to PA and prevent its oligomerization. Four of these compounds slowed PA association in a FRET-based oligomerization assay, and two of those protected cells from intoxication at concentrations of 1-10 μM. Exploration of the protective mechanism by Western blot showed decreased SDS-resistant PA oligomer on cells and, surprisingly, decreased amounts of activated PA. In …

Aspm And The Evolution Of Cerebral Cortical Size In A Community Of New World Monkeys, Fernando A. Villanea, George H. Perry, Gustavo A. Gutiérrez-Espeleta, Nathaniel J. Dominy
Dartmouth Scholarship
The ASPM (abnormal spindle-like microcephaly associated) gene has been proposed as a major determinant of cerebral cortical size among primates, including humans. Yet the specific functions of ASPM and its connection to human intelligence remain controversial. This debate is limited in part by a taxonomic focus on Old World monkeys and apes. Here we expand the comparative context of ASPM sequence analyses with a study of New World monkeys, a radiation of primates in which enlarged brain size has evolved in parallel in spider monkeys (genus Ateles) and capuchins (genus Cebus). The primate community of Costa Rica is perhaps a …
Beyond Beliefs: Teachers Adapting Problem-Based Learning To Preexisting Systems Of Practice, John L. Pecore
Beyond Beliefs: Teachers Adapting Problem-Based Learning To Preexisting Systems Of Practice, John L. Pecore
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Problem-based learning (PBL) is a constructivist method of instruction aligned with the science educational reform movement to increase scientific literacy for all Americans. As such, PBL instruction is an increasingly popular topic for professional development workshops offered to teachers in secondary learning environments. This research presents a case study of four teachers’ alignment of classroom practice with constructivist principles after participating in a one-week PBL workshop. Teachers assimilated PBL instruction into their current system of teaching; therefore, despite congruent beliefs, those teachers without a constructivist system of practice taught the PBL method with less alignment to constructivist principles. This discrepancy …

Background: The rising demand for pork has resulted in a massive expansion of pig production in Uganda. This has resulted in increased contact between humans and pigs. Pigs can act as reservoirs for emerging infectious diseases. Therefore identification of potential zoonotic pathogens is important for public health surveillance. In this study, during a routine general surveillance for African swine fever, domestic pigs from Uganda were screened for the presence of RNA and DNA viruses using a high-throughput pyrosequencing method. Findings. Serum samples from 16 domestic pigs were collected from five regions in Uganda and pooled accordingly. Genomic DNA and RNA …

Cost Analysis Of Forage Alternatives, Roger K. Wilson, Matthew Stockton
Cost Analysis Of Forage Alternatives, Roger K. Wilson, Matthew Stockton
Cornhusker Economics
With drought conditions reducing forage production throughout Nebraska, many livestock producers are looking for feed alternatives. The University of Nebraska has two Excel spreadsheets that are useful tools for analyzing feed options, the Cornstalk Grazing Cow-Q-Lator and the Feed Cost Cow-Q-Lator.
The Cornstalk Grazing Cow-Q-Lator estimates the number of acres of cornstalks that are needed, as well as doing a cost analysis. Given a specific number and weight of animals and the length of time a cattle producer might wish to graze them, the number of acres of cornstalks needed is calculated based on the corn yield. Research has …

The Degeneration Of The Space: On Baudrillard's Critique Of Contemporary Architecture And Urban Space, Shuyuan Wan
The Degeneration Of The Space: On Baudrillard's Critique Of Contemporary Architecture And Urban Space, Shuyuan Wan
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Jean Baudrillard not only revealed the loss of truth and meaning, the degeneration of urban space, and the paradox of the space-consumption in what he might term as the Era of Simulation but also established a logic of causation between the overrunning of simulation and the degeneration of the space. In this light, he indulged in his own poetic aesthetics and philosophy of seduction, and hoped to take it as an antidote to re-animate the urban environment and cultural space lost in simulations and codes and to restore aesthetical function back to urban architecture.

The Use Of Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors In Biomechanics And Rehabilitation Applications: The State-Of-The-Art And Ongoing Research Topics, Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan, E. Al-Fakih, Noor Azuan Abu Osman
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
In recent years, fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are becoming increasingly attractive for sensing applications in biomechanics and rehabilitation engineering due to their advantageous properties like small size, light weight, biocompatibility, chemical inertness, multiplexing capability and immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI). They also offer a high-performance alternative to conventional technologies, either for measuring a variety of physical parameters or for performing high-sensitivity biochemical analysis. FBG-based sensors demonstrated their feasibility for specific sensing applications in aeronautic, automotive, civil engineering structure monitoring and undersea oil exploration; however, their use in the field of biomechanics and rehabilitation applications is very recent and its practicality …
