Development And Validation Of A Simple Method For The Detection Of Fascaplysin In Plasma, Kenneth H. Swartz, Frederick A. Valeriote, Joseph Media, Tyler A. Johnson, Karen Tenney, Phillip Crews, Jiajiu Shaw

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

Fascaplysin is a cytotoxic natural product isolated from a variety of Indo-Pacific marine organisms, primarily Fascaplysinopsis sponges and Didemnum tunicates. Positive xenograft studies involving this alkaloid structural class have indicated that fascaplysin may serve as an important lead compound for preclinical development. This study was undertaken as a prelude to a full pharmacokinetics and therapeutic assessment of fascaplysin. We describe here a simple plasma preparation and a rapid HPLC method for the detection of fascaplysin in mice. The method was validated by parameters including good linear correlation, a limit of quantification of 107.1 μg/ mL, and a good precision with …

The Digital Age: What’S Ahead For Magazines And Newspapers?, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Recent reports that the historic publication Newsweek magazine would release its final print edition in December and switch to an all-digital format in 2013, reinstates the question: What will the future hold for magazines and newspapers in the ever-changing world of technology? Ongoing changes in these fields have caused colleges to rethink how they educate their students. Gardner-Webb University’s Dr. Joseph Webb, professor of Journalism in the Communication Studies department, recently addressed these emerging issues.

Understanding The Culture Of Ahiska Turks In Wheaton, Illinois: A Case Study, Omer Avci Oct 2012

Understanding The Culture Of Ahiska Turks In Wheaton, Illinois: A Case Study, Omer Avci

The Qualitative Report

This study focuses on the cultural characteristics of Ahiska Turks in Wheaton, Illinois in the United States. By trying to understand the culture of the participants, I sought to shed light on how the Ahiska Turks managed to cope with the hardship they experienced and yet preserved their ethnic identities. In this multicase study, I interviewed six male Ahiska Turks. As a result of my analyses, eight themes emerged: family, religion (i.e., Islam), language (i.e., Turkish), communal life, endogamy, authoritarianism, oppression against the preservation of culture and identity, and education for upward mobility. The Ahiska Turks’ agrarian way of life, …

A Key Challenge In Global Hrm: Adding New Insights To Existing Expatriate Spouse Adjustment Models, Ritu Gupta, Pratyush Banerjee, Jighyasu Gaur Oct 2012

A Key Challenge In Global Hrm: Adding New Insights To Existing Expatriate Spouse Adjustment Models, Ritu Gupta, Pratyush Banerjee, Jighyasu Gaur

The Qualitative Report

This study is an attempt to strengthen the existing knowledge about factors affecting the adjustment process of the trailing expatriate spouse and the subsequent impact of any maladjustment or expatriate failure. We conducted a qualitative enquiry using grounded theory methodology with 26 Indian spouses who had to deal with their partner’s expatriate assignment relocation. The open and axial coding techniques and the process of theoretical sampling are discussed at length. Our investigation reveals the recurrence of several factors earlier studied in previous models such as cultural novelty, family and peer support, the organization’s support and the spouse’s personality. Additionally, we …

Obstacle As Inspiration: Producing Imago Dei, Jeremy Gemetta Oct 2012

Obstacle As Inspiration: Producing Imago Dei, Jeremy Gemetta

Theses

Connecting, sharing, breathing into life: for me these are the magic behind film-making. I strive to express more than the sum of visible parts. Movement and its absence are visceral tools to express temporality and relationship dynamic; they formed the concept for my thesis film, Imago Dei. Story always captivated me: over time, I found I could engage people with it, but was frustrated by inconsistent results. My instinctive grasp of image as a storytelling tool did not help me string visual essays into a narrative. Imago Dei would be about the magic of human connection. Inspired by Chris Marker's …

Electrochemical Detection Of Ammonia In Aqueous Solution Using Fluorescamine: A Comparison Of Fluorometric Versus Voltammetric Analysis, Panchompoo Janjira, G. Compton Richard Oct 2012

Electrochemical Detection Of Ammonia In Aqueous Solution Using Fluorescamine: A Comparison Of Fluorometric Versus Voltammetric Analysis, Panchompoo Janjira, G. Compton Richard

Journal of Electrochemistry

Fluorescamine is a non-fluorescent reagent widely used for the quantitative determination of primary amines by fluorescence spectroscopy as it reacts readily with primary amines to form a fluorescent product. In this work, a new sensitive voltammetric method for the detection of ammonia in aqueous solution by the reaction with fluorescamine has been developed. First, the electrochemical behaviour of fluorescamine in the absence and presence of ammonia was investigated in 0.1 mol L-1 borate buffer solution (pH 9.0) by cyclic voltammetry using a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. As for fluorescamine itself, a well-defined irreversible oxidation peak could be observed at …

Settlement In The Light Of European Experiences. In Search Of Optimal Solutions, Elżbieta Krajewska Oct 2012

Settlement In The Light Of European Experiences. In Search Of Optimal Solutions, Elżbieta Krajewska

internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)

The purpose of this paper is to analyze settlement procedure in competition law on the basis of experiences arising from European law and national laws of Great Britain, France and Germany. In the first part the paper compares different legal frameworks according to the several chosen criteria. This description is then illustrated with the decisional practice of competition authorities. In the next part the rationale behind different solutions is discussed, taking into account the basic aim of the settlement, which is to achieve procedural economy on the one hand and being attractive for on the other hand. Key problems identified …

Leverage And Alcohol Addiction, Tom Gallagher Oct 2012

Leverage And Alcohol Addiction, Tom Gallagher

Northeast Popular Culture Association

This paper confronts the question of whether messages can be diluted or even contradicted by the format in which they are delivered through a textual analysis of the TNT procedural drama Leverage, examining the portrayal of alcoholism in the program. The procedural drama, which often focuses on figures in law and order occupations, is characterized by close-ended episodes that often feature happy endings. Alcohol addiction has been a staple of many television programs, but these programs were mostly comedies or serial dramas. Leverage, a procedural drama with a light touch, is a modern day Robin Hood tale focused on five …

Woof: Rin Tin Tin And The Hero Dogs, Amos St. Germain

Northeast Popular Culture Association

Susan Orlean’s recent book on the phenomenon of Rin Tin Tin has rekindled this author’s interest in “Rinty” and our fascination with animal heroes, particularly dogs. How does Rinty work as a hero? What does Rinty tell us about ourselves?

Children’S Television And Emotional Literacy, Diane Williamson Oct 2012

Children’S Television And Emotional Literacy, Diane Williamson

Northeast Popular Culture Association

Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood both promote the social and emotional learning of preschoolers, leading to lifelong positive effects. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood has recently been created to replace Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, to an unknown degree of effectiveness. Despite the success of these two shows, we still have a lot to learn about the teaching of socio-emotional skills, but perhaps what is even more unsettling is that the majority of children’s programs simply ignore the proven methods of socio-emotional learning that these shows have established, possibly to the detriment of their own goals of cognitive education.

Cape Fear And Cuckoo’S Nest: Cultural Discourse On Dangerous Men, David Tanner Oct 2012

Cape Fear And Cuckoo’S Nest: Cultural Discourse On Dangerous Men, David Tanner

Northeast Popular Culture Association

Cape Fear, the movie, and Ken Kesey’s novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, both debuted in 1962. The film, adapted by James Webb from John D. MacDonald’s 1957 crime fiction, The Executioners, was grounded in the cold war mentality of the 1950s. Kesey’s novel heralded social change and became emblematic of 1960s counter-culture by the time it achieved film fame in 1975. While seemingly unrelated texts, their intersection in 1962 and the timeline of their novel-to-film trajectories can be approached as a revealing cultural discourse regarding masculinity, the cold war, and social change. Analysis of this discourse also invites …

The Phantom Of The Opera: Spectacular Musical Or Archetypal Story?, Patricia Drumright Oct 2012

The Phantom Of The Opera: Spectacular Musical Or Archetypal Story?, Patricia Drumright

Northeast Popular Culture Association

Although the story of The Phantom of the Opera originated about 100 years ago, today’s audiences are more likely to be familiar with—and even “phans” of—the musical adaptation by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which has become famous since its début in London in 1986. Considering that the theatrical version has received international acclaim and enjoys worldwide popularity—and considering that Gaston Leroux’s novel has merited scores of adaptations in the last century—surprisingly little scholarship exists on these various works. This exploratory essay addresses the popularity of The Phantom of the Opera (especially over the last 25 years) as well as its greater …

The Pestilence Of London: Women, Hygiene, Prostitution And Pollution, Sophie Freestone Oct 2012

The Pestilence Of London: Women, Hygiene, Prostitution And Pollution, Sophie Freestone

Northeast Popular Culture Association

Depictions of women and water during the Great Stink of London were bound up with moral and medical fears of the mid to late nineteenth century. Specifically, I will look at a paint by each of the following artists: Sir John Everett Millais, John Rodham Spencer Stanhope, and J.W. Waterhouse. The movement of respectable women into the public sphere meant that they became less controllable and also less distinguishable from disreputable women, specifically prostitutes. As a result there was a rising anxiety about the actions of women, which became shackled to fears of health and hygiene in relation to communicable …

Stem Cell Transplantation Increases Antioxidant Effects In Diabetic Mice, Ming Li, Luca Vanella, Yuming Zhang, Ming Shi, Takashi Takaki, Joseph I. Shapiro M.D., Susuma Ikehera

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Intra bone marrow-bone marrow transplantation (IBM- BMT) + thymus transplantation (TT) has been shown to reduce the incidence of graft versus host disease (GVHD) and restore donor-derived T cell function. In addition, an increase in insulin sensitivity occurred in db/db mice after IBM-BMT+TT treatment. Heme oxygenase (HO)-1 is a stress inducible enzyme which exert antioxidant, antiapoptotic, and immune-modulating properties. We examined whether IBM-BMT+TT could modulate the expression of HO-1 in the kidneys of db/db mice. Six-week-old db/db mice with blood glucose levels higher than 250 mg/dl were treated with IBM-BMT+TT. Six weeks later, the db/db mice showed decreased body weight, …
