Is Belief Larger Than Fact: Expectations, Optimism And Reality For Translational Stem Cell Research, Tania M. Bubela, Matthew D. Li, Mohamed Hafez, Mark Bieber, Harold Atkins
Office of the Provost
Background: Stem cell (SC) therapies hold remarkable promise for many diseases, but there is a significant gulf between public expectations and the reality of progress toward clinical application. Public expectations are fueled by stakeholder arguments for research and public funding, coupled with intense media coverage in an ethically charged arena. We examine media representations in light of the expanding global landscape of SC clinical trials, asking what patients may realistically expect by way of timelines for the therapeutic and curative potential of regenerative medicine?
Methods: We built 2 international datasets: (1) 3,404 clinical trials (CT) containing 'stem cell*' from ClinicalTrials.gov …

Rural Libraries In Support Of Rural Reconstruction: Tagores’ Thinking And Reality, Nimai Chand Saha, Keshab Chandra Sinha Mr.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
It is admitted that to make overall development of any citizen rural and urban areas are to be given equal importance and sometimes rural areas may be given more emphasize than urban areas to confirm all wide development. Gurudeva Rabidranath Tagore was one of the pioneers who have given enough attention for the rural communities and to materialise his dream of rural reconstruction he has introduced several project for the welfare of the rural people. To reach the village people and also to eradicate the illiteracy he introduced ‘CHALANTIKA’ library which was meant for the dissemination of library services to …

Theses
The goal of this thesis project was to create an object or set of objects that would serve as an interaction point to foster reciprocal learning and perceptual exchange between children and adults. The underlying investigation dealt with the notion that the child's point of view can be quite insightful, but it is often forgotten or overlooked and replaced by a more `reasonable' and rational perspective as we age. The project's final form serves not only as a whimsical, functional set of dishes, but also as a language of anthropomorphic forms.
An Alternative Framework For Ethics Instruction In Social Education, Thomas J. Misco Jr., Gregory E. Hamot
An Alternative Framework For Ethics Instruction In Social Education, Thomas J. Misco Jr., Gregory E. Hamot
Education and Culture
Ethics are central to social education, and making ethical decisions underlies the purpose of teaching critical thinking and interpretive skills in the classroom. The point in acquiring these skills is to apply them in the real world when deciding "what ought to be," "right from wrong," and "good from bad." Few educational philosophers would disagree up to this point. However, when discussion begins on how to teach ethics, beliefs diverge considerably.
Ironically, both the extreme left and extreme right wings of educational thought seek the same end, that of ethics inculcation. Inculcation of anything is a dangerous if not unethical …
A Deweyan Perspective On Communication, Cooperation, And Collaboration Between Elementary And Secondary Educators, Pamela Ames Coke
A Deweyan Perspective On Communication, Cooperation, And Collaboration Between Elementary And Secondary Educators, Pamela Ames Coke
Education and Culture
In the field of education, the belief is often expressed among educators and non-educators alike that "elementary teachers teach kids; secondary teachers teach subject matter." This sets up an unspoken dichotomy that elementary teachers do not teach subject matter and that secondary teachers do not teach kids. This presents a problem situation. At the heart of this problem situation is the fact that elementary and secondary educators have little, if any, contact with one another within the public school setting. As a result, one has no idea what the other is doing, and this serves to further perpetuate stereotypes. Communication …

"I Used To Be Very Smart:" Children Talk About Immigration, Carol Korn
Education and Culture
In the paper which follows, children's narrative as a genre which offers a closer look at childhood experience is explored. The children's own stories of their immigration experiences are examined for the meanings which these transitions hold for them, and for the implications for educational practice they suggest. Landscapes of home and stories about school figure prominently in the children's narratives, and are juxtaposed against current life experiences. This paper will explore the role of the imagination in enabling children to make connections between their lives before and after immigration and suggest implications for educational practice.

Infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (INCL) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder caused by a deficiency of palmitoyl-protein thioesterase-1 (PPT1). We have previously shown that children with INCL have increased risk of hypothermia during anesthesia and that PPT1-deficiency in mice is associated with disruption of adaptive energy metabolism, downregulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α), and mitochondrial dysfunction. Here we hypothesized that Ppt1-knockout mice, a well-studied model of INCL that shows many of the neurologic manifestations of the disease, would recapitulate the thermoregulation impairment observed in children with INCL. We also hypothesized that when exposed to cold, Ppt1-knockout …

The Ecological Dimension Of Natalia Toledo Paz’S Poetry, Ida Day
The Ecological Dimension Of Natalia Toledo Paz’S Poetry, Ida Day
Modern Languages Faculty Research
This essay explores the position and contribution of Natalia Toledo Paz, one of the most recognized contemporary poets in the native languages of Mexico, to the field of environmental ethics in local and global contexts. I focus on her bilingual works, written in Spanish and Zapotec, Ca gunaa gubidxa, ca gunaa guiiba’risaca/Mujeres de sol, mujeres de oro (2002) and Guie’yaase’/Olivo negro (2005), which revive the traditions, the poet’s memories, the nature, and the spirituality of her native Juchitán. Her focus on the Juchitec women have extended and deepened the mission of contemporary indigenous writers by incorporating the concerns of Latin …

Load-Relaxation Properties Of The Human Trunk In Response To Prolonged Flexion: Measuring And Modeling The Effect Of Flexion Angle, Nima Toosizadeh, Maury A. Nussbaum, Babak Bazrgari, Michael L. Madigan
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Experimental studies suggest that prolonged trunk flexion reduces passive support of the spine. To understand alterations of the synergy between active and passive tissues following such loadings, several studies have assessed the time-dependent behavior of passive tissues including those within spinal motion segments and muscles. Yet, there remain limitations regarding load-relaxation of the lumbar spine in response to flexion exposures and the influence of different flexion angles. Ten healthy participants were exposed for 16 min to each of five magnitudes of lumbar flexion specified relative to individual flexion-relaxation angles (i.e., 30, 40, 60, 80, and 100%), during which lumbar flexion …
The Nest Predator Assemblage For Songbirds In Mono Lake Basin Riparian Habitats, Quresh S. Latif, Sacha K. Heath, Grant Ballard
The Nest Predator Assemblage For Songbirds In Mono Lake Basin Riparian Habitats, Quresh S. Latif, Sacha K. Heath, Grant Ballard
Western North American Naturalist
Because nest predation strongly limits avian fitness, ornithologists identify nest predators to inform ecological research and conservation. During 2002–2008, we used both video-monitoring of natural nests and direct observations of predation to identify nest predators of open-cup nesting riparian songbirds along tributaries of Mono Lake, California. Video cameras at 50 nests of 3 songbird species and direct observations of additional nests confirmed 10 distinct nest-predator species and suggested one additional species. Video-monitored nests experienced reduced predation rates, and video observations mainly captured nestling predation, even though predation rates were higher for nonvideo-monitored nests during the egg period. These findings suggest …

Population Abundance And Sex Ratio Of The Viviparous Freshwater Fish Poeciliopsis Baenschi (Poeciliidae) Throughout Its Range In Western Mexico, J. Jaime Zúñiga-Vega, Ana L. Hernández-Rosas, Alejandro Molina-Moctezuma, Hibraim A. Pérez-Mendoza, Fernanda R. Rodríguez-Reyes, Yolotzin M. Bravo-Espinosa, Héctor Espinosa-Pérez
Western North American Naturalist
We estimated population abundance and sex ratio for a freshwater live-bearing fish species (Poeciliopsis baenschi) that inhabits fluvial systems in western Mexico. We conducted mark-recapture experiments in 6 distinct populations. We used both our catch data as well as estimates of capture probability to calculate the number of individuals per unit water volume for adult males, adult females, and juveniles. Overall, abundance varied among sites from 23.8 individuals · m–3 to 363.2 individuals · m–3. In most of our study sites, the estimated sex ratio was markedly biased toward females (up to 11 females per …
Survival Of Translocated Greater Sage-Grouse Hens In Northeastern California, Chad B. Bell, T. Luke George
Survival Of Translocated Greater Sage-Grouse Hens In Northeastern California, Chad B. Bell, T. Luke George
Western North American Naturalist
Translocation success of Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is generally measured by documenting whether translocated individuals survive and reproduce at the release site. However, demographic parameters, such as annual survival of translocated individuals, provide a more accurate measure of translocation success. We translocated 60 female sage-grouse from Oregon and Nevada to Clear Lake National Wildlife Refuge, California, during 2005–2010 to augment a small population of resident grouse. We radio-marked each translocated female and a sample of resident female sage-grouse, recorded their locations, and monitored their survival at monthly intervals over the study period. We observed most (55/60) translocated birds …

Biodiversity, Water Chemistry, Physical Characteristics, And Anthropogenic Disturbance Gradients Of Sandstone Springs On The Colorado Plateau, Rebecca H. Weissinger, Dustin W. Perkins, Eric C. Dinger
Western North American Naturalist
Springs located on the Colorado Plateau are highly threatened and represent a small percentage of the landscape; yet they are disproportionately important to diverse native flora and fauna. The relationships between anthropogenic disturbance, aquatic macroinvertebrate species composition, and environmental variables at these springs have received little study. We selectively visited 40 sandstone springs in southeastern Utah and southwestern Colorado to span a range of impacts. We classified the springs into impact categories based on a spring impact score, and we measured biodiversity (aquatic macroinvertebrates), water chemistry (nutrients, dissolved O2, pH, specific conductivity, temperature, turbidity, coliform bacteria [Escherichia …
