Second Life In The Classroom: Interacting With The Modern College Student, Stef Nicovich Nov 2012

Second Life In The Classroom: Interacting With The Modern College Student, Stef Nicovich

Atlantic Marketing Journal

How do we engage our students to actively learn? That is a question that educators are asking more and more often. New techniques and philosophies are constantly being developed and tried in the classroom yet we still come back to the same observations. Students are generally unprepared for college level studies and often seem unwilling to put in the required effort needed to succeed. Perhaps one reason students seem disengaged is because they may not see the value of what they are learning. The connections between their studies and how they will benefit them later in life may not be …

Jurisdictional Procedure, Justin Pidot Nov 2012

Jurisdictional Procedure, Justin Pidot

William & Mary Law Review

Scholars have lavished attention on the substance of jurisdictional doctrines such as standing, mootness, diversity, and federal question. They have left largely unexamined, however, the procedures courts use to address these doctrines; collectively, I refer to these procedures as “jurisdictional procedure.” A paramount feature of jurisdictional procedure is the unique and virtually unqualified obligation federal courts possess to identify and decide issues of subject matter jurisdiction even if the parties and lower courts overlook these issues. Courts have reached no consensus about how to identify the facts necessary to effectuate this obligation. The confluence of court-initiated legal inquiry and unpredictable …

Intsormil- Centa’S New Bmr Sorghum Varieties Create A Surge In Dairy Production, René Clará Valencia Nov 2012

Intsormil- Centa’S New Bmr Sorghum Varieties Create A Surge In Dairy Production, René Clará Valencia

INTSORMIL Scientific Publications

Scientists from the INTSORMIL-CENTA project based at the National Center for Agricultural Technology and Forestry (CENTA) of El Salvador have worked for five years to develop varieties of sorghum for grain and forage that are highly nutritious to cattle. Using the gene bmr-12, received from Dr. Gebisa Ejeta of Purdue University, they combined commercial varieties CENTA S-2, S-3 CENTA, CENTA RCV and VG 146 and were able to form new varieties containing this same gene. The first generation created 76 new varieties.

Textbooks, Libraries & Students: An Evolving Partnership, Susan Kendall, Mary Nino, Rae Ann Stahl

Faculty and Staff Publications

A recent Government Accountability Office study stated that close to 40% of college students decide against buying textbooks. Rising textbook and tuition costs have created an economic crisis for students that has dramatic consequences for their success and ultimate retention and graduation rates. As a result, libraries and faculty are investigating how to incorporate library resources and open educational resources (OER) into required course materials. A new San Jose State University (SJSU) initiative known as “Affordable Learning $olutions” works to provide class resources for students by utilizing library owned electronic resources. This session will explain how the SJSU Library partnered …

Identifying Reference Genes With Stable Expression From High Throughput Sequence Data, Harriet Alexander, Bethany D. Jenkins, Tatiana A. Rynearson, Mak A. Saito, Melissa L. Mercier, Sonya T. Dyhrman Nov 2012

Identifying Reference Genes With Stable Expression From High Throughput Sequence Data, Harriet Alexander, Bethany D. Jenkins, Tatiana A. Rynearson, Mak A. Saito, Melissa L. Mercier, Sonya T. Dyhrman

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Genes that are constitutively expressed across multiple environmental stimuli are crucial to quantifying differentially expressed genes, particularly when employing quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assays. However, the identification of these potential reference genes in non-model organisms is challenging and is often guided by expression patterns in distantly related organisms. Here, transcriptome datasets from the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana grown under replete, phosphorus-limited, iron-limited, and phosphorus and iron co-limited nutrient regimes were analyzed through literature-based searches for homologous reference genes, k-means clustering, and analysis of sequence counts (ASC) to identify putative reference genes. A total of 9759 genes were identified …

Inhibition Of Microrna-302 (Mir-302) By Bone Morphogenetic Protein 4 (Bmp4) Facilitates The Bmp Signaling Pathway, Hara Kang, Justin Louie, Alexandra Weisman, Jessica Sheu-Gruttadauria, Brandi N. Davis-Dusenbery, Giorgio Lagna, Akiko Hata

Biology

The signaling pathway mediated by BMPs plays an essential role during development as well as the maintenance of homeostasis in adult. Aberrant activation or inactivation of BMP signaling can lead to developmental defects and various human disorders. To fine-tune its activity, BMP signaling is regulated both positively and negatively by extrinsic and intrinsic regulatory factors that modulate binding of ligand to the receptors, and the activity of receptors and their dedicated signal transducers, the Smad proteins. Upon BMP binding to the receptor complex, Smad proteins translocate to the nucleus and modulate gene expression transcriptionally by directly associating with the promoter …

A Comparison Of Literature-Based And Content-Based Guided Reading Materials On Elementary Student Reading And Science Achievement, Christine Guns Nov 2012

A Comparison Of Literature-Based And Content-Based Guided Reading Materials On Elementary Student Reading And Science Achievement, Christine Guns

Theses and Dissertations

Guided reading, as developed by Fountas and Pinnell (2001), has been a staple of elementary reading programs for the past decade. Teachers in the elementary school setting utilize this small group, tailored instruction in order to differentiate and meet the instructional needs of the students. The literature shows academic benefit for students who have special needs, such as learning disabilities, autism, and hearing impairments but consideration of academic impact has not been investigated for regular education students. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to investigate the academic impact of the use of content-related (Group C) and the traditional literature-based …
