Ecological Development Of A Management Plan For Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus) On St. George Island, Alaska, Michelle L. St. Martin Dec 2012

Ecological Development Of A Management Plan For Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus) On St. George Island, Alaska, Michelle L. St. Martin

Agriculture and Horticulture

Management of an herbivore production system requires a working knowledge of the components and processes of the targeted grazing system. Land owners and stakeholders wish to develop a management plan for reindeer on St. George Island, Alaska. The foci of this study were to determine seasonal diet composition (including forage preference); evaluate nutritional content of Angelica lucid, a potential alternative winter forage; estimate lichen biomass; and estimate reindeer abundance, annual production, and sustainable stocking density. Lichens were the preferred reindeer forage throughout the year, however significant seasonal dietary shifts occurred across the seasons. Fortis and grasses were consumed in significantly …

Subsistence Salmon Fishing In Beaufort Sea Communities, Shelley S.D. Cotton Dec 2012

Subsistence Salmon Fishing In Beaufort Sea Communities, Shelley S.D. Cotton

Fisheries

Environmental change, combined with observations of increasing numbers of salmon in subsistence fisheries, has generated a need for more information about salmon use, abundance, and distribution in the Arctic. Ethnographic research was conducted in Barrow and Nuiqsut, Alaska, in 2010 and 2011 with 41 active fishermen and elders. Salmon catches were perceived to be increasing; however, perceptions about changing salmon abundance were mixed. While pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and chum salmon (O. keta) have been observed in subsistence fisheries in the central North Slope region for over 50 years, only within the last 10 to 20 years has local use …

Characterizing The Fish Community In Turbid Alaskan Rivers To Assess Potential Interactions With Hydrokinetic Devices, Parker T. Bradley Dec 2012

Characterizing The Fish Community In Turbid Alaskan Rivers To Assess Potential Interactions With Hydrokinetic Devices, Parker T. Bradley

Fisheries

The Yukon and Tanana rivers are two large, glacially turbid rivers in Alaska, where hydrokinetic projects are being explored for feasibility of electricity production. Downstream migration behavior of fishes in these rivers is poorly understood; as a result, the potential impacts of hydrokinetic devices, which will be placed in the deepest and fastest part of the river, on fishes are unknown. Downstream migrating fishes were sampled during the ice-free season along the river margins of the Yukon River in 2010 and the river margins and mid-channel of the Tanana River in 2011. Results suggest that the river margins in the …

Impacts Of Sea Otter Predation On Commercially Important Sea Cucumbers (Parastichopus Californicus) In Southeast Alaska, Sean D. Larson Dec 2012

Impacts Of Sea Otter Predation On Commercially Important Sea Cucumbers (Parastichopus Californicus) In Southeast Alaska, Sean D. Larson

Fisheries

Consequences from management actions, particularly those regarding species reintroductions, are not always immediately apparent. After sea otters were extirpated from Southeast Alaska in the 18th and 19th century fur trade, it is presumed that marine invertebrate stocks grew in the absence of sea otter predation. Since reintroduction in the 1960s, the Southeast Alaska sea otter population has grown, with great potential to deplete the commercially important sea cucumber, Parastichopus californicus. This study evaluates the interaction with and impacts of sea otters on sea cucumbers using foraging observations and sea cucumber density data collected for fishery management. Sea otter diets, in …

A Test Of Local Adaptation In Seasonally Separate Subpopulations Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Christopher V. Manhard Dec 2012

A Test Of Local Adaptation In Seasonally Separate Subpopulations Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Christopher V. Manhard

Fisheries

Differences in fitness related traits were observed between first generation (F₁) hybrid and control lines of temporally distinct subpopulations of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha). The lines were cultured in a common freshwater environment, released to sea together, and collected at their natal stream as adults. Early-and late-run pink salmon, which are partially genetically isolated by the time at which they return to Auke Creek in Southeast Alaska to spawn, were crossed to create F₁ and F₂ hybrid groups in the even- and odd-year brood lines. Marine survival of controls exceeded that of F₁ hybrids of the even-year brood line, whereas …

Evaluation Of Prey Composition And Nutritional Value Of Diets Of Free-Ranging Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) From Tugidak Island, Gretchen L. Geiger Dec 2012

Evaluation Of Prey Composition And Nutritional Value Of Diets Of Free-Ranging Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) From Tugidak Island, Gretchen L. Geiger

Marine Biology

Changes in climate can cause shifts in ecosystem structure that can affect quantity or quality of prey available to predator populations. Due to sex or age-specific behaviors of predators, certain classes within a population may be more severely impacted by changes in their diet. This study evaluated prey composition and nutritional value of summer diets of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) from Tugidak Island, Alaska from 2001-2009. The MIXIT-WIN program was used to estimate the nutritional value of average harbor seal diets. Changes in relative abundance of certain prey species were correlated to sea surface temperature anomalies. Despite changes in …

Meg Coherence Imaging In Dyslexia: Activation Of Working Memory Pathways, Alfred Mansour Dec 2012

Meg Coherence Imaging In Dyslexia: Activation Of Working Memory Pathways, Alfred Mansour

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The aims of this dissertation are to 1) review the genetic, neurodevelopmental, structural, and functional brain imaging studies that are the foundations of our understanding of dyslexia and 2) investigate the pattern of activation and functional connectivity of neuronal networks critical in working memory in dyslexics by means of magnetoenchephalographic (MEG) coherence imaging. Dyslexics showed an early onset of activation in the precentral gyrus and the superior frontal gyrus, which differed from controls where activation was initiated in posterior cortical regions (supramarginal gyrus and superior temporal gyrus). Further, dyslexics showed lower normalized amplitudes of activation in the right superior temporal …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Ang1 (Angiopoietin-1) have opposing effects on vascular permeability, but the molecular basis of these effects is not fully known. We report in this paper that VEGF and Ang1 regulate endothelial cell (EC) junctions by determining the localization of the RhoA-specific guanine nucleotide exchange factor Syx. Syx was recruited to junctions by members of the Crumbs polarity complex and promoted junction integrity by activating Diaphanous. VEGF caused translocation of Syx from cell junctions, promoting junction disassembly, whereas Ang1 maintained Syx at the junctions, inducing junction stabilization. The VEGF-induced translocation of Syx from EC junctions was …

Arctic Fox Winter Movement And Diet In Relation To Industrial Development On Alaska's North Slope, Neil S. Lehner Dec 2012

Arctic Fox Winter Movement And Diet In Relation To Industrial Development On Alaska's North Slope, Neil S. Lehner

Biological Sciences

I examined winter movement and diet of Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) in the Prudhoe Bay oilfields and an adjacent undeveloped area (National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A)). Movement metrics were compared between these areas using data from satellite collars. Daily travel rate was approximately 5 times greater in the undeveloped area than in Prudhoe Bay. Four adult foxes collared in NPR-A used the sea ice for extensive time periods. One of these foxes traveled 338 km in three days while another traveled to Banks Island (Northwest Territories, Canada), over 1050 km from its capture location. Prudhoe Bay foxes did not make these …

Weather-Based Damage Prediction Models For Electric Distribution Networks, David W. Wanik Dec 2012

Weather-Based Damage Prediction Models For Electric Distribution Networks, David W. Wanik

Master's Theses

From thunderstorms to hurricanes, electric distribution networks are subject to a wide range of warm weather storm events. Tropical Storm Irene (2011) and Hurricane Sandy (2012) are two events in recent memory that disrupted over half of The Connecticut Light and Power Company’s (CL&P) service territory, which left some customers without power for up to eleven days. This research study investigates a damage prediction framework for both thunderstorms and hurricanes that combines two generalized linear models to probabilistically determine the occurrence and extent of damages, known as trouble spots, to the overhead power distribution network. The models are inputted with …

Effects Of Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Brain Injury On Spatial Working Memory, Amanda L. Smith Dec 2012

Effects Of Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Brain Injury On Spatial Working Memory, Amanda L. Smith

Master's Theses

Children born prematurely or at very low birth weight (VLBW) have an increased risk for hypoxic ischemic brain injury (HI). HI refers to a lack of adequate blood and oxygen flow in the brain. HI can also occur in the term infant due to birth complications such as prolonged labor, placental dysfunction, or cord prolapse. In both populations (though exact patterns of neuropathology vary) brain damage is likely to occur in the form of decreased hippocampal and cortical volume, and enlargement of the ventricles (Kesler et al., 2004, Nagy et al., 2009). Resulting neuropathology can in turn lead to cognitive …

Nursing Females Are More Prone To Heat Stress: Demography Matters When Managing Flying-Foxes For Climate Change, Stephanie T. Snoyman, Jasmina Munich, Culum Brown

Ecological Impacts of Climate Change Collection

Determining the underlying mechanisms responsible for species-specific responses to climate change is important from a species management perspective. The grey-headed flying-fox, Pteropus poliocephalus, is listed as vulnerable but it also a significant pest species for orchardists and thereby presents an interesting management conundrum. Over the last century, the abundance of the grey-headed flying-fox, P. poliocephalus, in Australia has decreased due to a variety of threatening processes but has increased in abundance in urban areas. These flying-foxes are highly susceptible to extreme heat events which are predicted to increase in the future under climate change scenarios. Exceptionally hot days result in …

Microscopic Analysis Of Drosophila Melanogaster Rhoa Mutants During The Morphogenetic Process Of Head Involution, Pria Noelle Chang Dec 2012

Microscopic Analysis Of Drosophila Melanogaster Rhoa Mutants During The Morphogenetic Process Of Head Involution, Pria Noelle Chang

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

In the United States, three out of every 100 babies are born with a major type of birth defect. Human birth defects can be acquired during morphogenetic processes such as neurulation. A prominent morphogenetic process in the Drosophila model system is head involution. During head involution, embryonic epidermis moves anterior ward and simultaneously mouth structures move inward through a series of tucking, folding and migrations. These complex intracellular and intercellular shape changes are driven by RhoA signal transduction and may act on the actomyosin cytoskeleton. RhoA signal transduction is highly conserved, therefore Drosophila melanogaster is an effective model organism to …

What's That Hooting Sound? A Survey On Novel Sound Producing Mechanisms In Chameleons, Keyana Boka

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This research project seeks to study how chameleons generate low frequency vibrations, some audible and some not. The mechanism responsible for this 'hoot' is unknown. A modified tracheal appendage we termed “the resonator” has been hypothesized as the potential source of this sound. An anatomical survey was conducted on various chameleon species including, Chameleo melleri (Meller), Chamaeleo pardalis (Ambanja, Nosy Be, Panther, Sambava), Furcifer rhinoceratus, Chamaeleo dilepis (Flapneck), Chamaeleo rudis (Side-striped), Chamaeleo calyptratus (Veiled), Chamaeleo jacksonii (Jackson’s), Chamaeleo quadricornicus (4-horned), Chamaeleo quilensis (Flapneck), Chamaeleo senegalensis (Senegal), Chamaeleo jacksonii xantholophus (giant Jackson’s), and Rhampholean brevicaudatus (Pygmy). Each chameleon was dissected …

Three Dimensional Volumetric Display, Scott Matthew Cook Dec 2012

Three Dimensional Volumetric Display, Scott Matthew Cook

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Three dimensional (3D) displays are part of a growing market. These 3D displays are often seen in home entertainment and film industries. The most common three dimensional techniques require the use of glasses with special lenses to add the effect of “depth” in an animation. This project attempts to prove that a true three dimensional display can be made using low cost and accessible materials. The display is made from 625 Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) on a Peggy 2LE LED matrix display. The Peggy 2LE board is spun around 15 Hz and held tight between two cylindrical bearings. Blender, an …

Assessing The Feasibility Of Small Hydropower In Northern California, Andrea Peterson Dec 2012

Assessing The Feasibility Of Small Hydropower In Northern California, Andrea Peterson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Small hydropower is an underutilized form of clean energy generation. In order for any potential for small hydropower to be developed or utilized, the amount of potential power needs to be estimated accurately. A number of studies have been conducted, though none of these studies have taken local climate into account, which affects the accuracy of their results. A number of places in Northern California have potential that has not yet been utilized, but a more accurate assessment of that potential is called for. Although studies can be conducted through a number of different methodologies, most use GIS technology to …

Analyzing Land-Cover Change Within North West Rural Landscapes, Chantal Cassar Dec 2012

Analyzing Land-Cover Change Within North West Rural Landscapes, Chantal Cassar

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Landscape change is an issue of concern within the Maltese Islands; records of landscape change go back at least 450 years, and the rate of change has been particularly accelerated in recent decades. Notwithstanding the importance of this phenomenon, there have been few attempts to trace out patterns of landscape change over time. This study seeks to develop an understanding of landscape change within rural landscapes, over a period of 400 years. A qualitative analytical approach was used with a focus on five case study rural settlements in the North West of Malta. Land surveys and historic documentary sources together …
