Materializing Monsters: Aurora Models, Garage Kits And The Object Practices Of Horror Fandom, Bob Rehak Nov 2012

Materializing Monsters: Aurora Models, Garage Kits And The Object Practices Of Horror Fandom, Bob Rehak

Film & Media Studies Faculty Works

Since the explosion of ‘monster culture’ among adolescents in the 1960s, model kits, statues and toys based on horror-movie icons have played a key role in fan activities surrounding fantastic film and television. From magazines such as Famous Monsters to garage kits and collectible companies, these ‘object practices’ provide an alternative means of mapping the history, present and future of fantastic-media franchises, moving beyond reductive conceptions of marketing and promotion to suggest that material incarnations of science fiction, horror and fantasy texts are essential to their cultural persistence and commercial viability.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a globally significant disease, with 1.3 billion persons in 83 countries at risk. A coordinated effort of administering annual macrofilaricidal prophylactics to the entire at-risk population has succeeded in impacting and eliminating LF transmission in multiple regions. However, some areas in the South Pacific are predicted to persist as transmission sites, due in part to the biology of the mosquito vector, which has led to a call for additional tools to augment drug treatments. Autocidal strategies against mosquitoes are resurging in the effort against invasive mosquitoes and vector borne disease, with examples that include field …

Faculty and Staff Publications

Pharmacological inhibitors of cysteine proteases have provided useful insights into the regulation of calpain activity in erythrocytes. However, the precise biological function of calpain activity in erythrocytes remains poorly understood. Erythrocytes express calpain-1, an isoform regulated by calpastatin, the endogenous inhibitor of calpains. In the present study, we investigated the function of calpain-1 in mature erythrocytes using our calpain-1-null [KO (knockout)] mouse model. The calpain-1 gene deletion results in improved erythrocyte deformability without any measurable effect on erythrocyte lifespan in vivo. The calcium-induced sphero-echinocyte shape transition is compromised in the KO erythrocytes. Erythrocyte membrane proteins ankyrin, band 3, protein 4.1R, …

Sap Is Required For The Development Of Innate Phenotype In H2-M3-Restricted Cd8+ T Cells, Yaw Bediako, Yao Bian, Hong Zhang, Hoonsik Cho

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

H2-M3-restricted T cells have a preactivated surface phenotype, rapidly expand, and produce cytokines upon stimulation, and, as such, are classified as innate T cells. Unlike most innate T cells, M3-restricted T cells also express CD8ab coreceptors and a diverse TCR repertoire: hallmarks of conventional MHC Ia-restricted CD8+ T cells. Although invariant NKT cells are also innate T cells, they are selected exclusively on hematopoietic cells (HC), whereas M3-restricted T cells can be selected on either hematopoietic or thymic epithelial cells. Moreover, their phenotypes differ depending on what cells mediate their selection. Although there is a clear correlation between selection on …

Soybean Allergy: Effect Of Genetic Modification (Gm), Heat And Enzymatic Treatment On Overall Allergenicity, Rakhi Panda Nov 2012

Soybean Allergy: Effect Of Genetic Modification (Gm), Heat And Enzymatic Treatment On Overall Allergenicity, Rakhi Panda

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Soybean allergy affects approximately 0.4% of children worldwide. At least 16 proteins in soybean bind IgE from some soybean allergic subjects. Although the relative allergenic importance and abundance of individual proteins in soybean varieties is not understood, the allergenicity assessment guideline for the safety of genetically modified (GM) food crops (Codex, 2003) includes assessing potential increases in expression of endogenous allergens in an allergenic crop like soybeans that might be due to insertion of the new DNA. The studies described in this dissertation included comparison of binding of IgE from individual soybean allergic subjects to proteins in three transgenic soybean …

Escherichia Coli-Mediated Impairment Of Ureteric Contractility Is Uropathogenic E. Coli Specific., Rachel V. Floyd, Mathew Upton, Scott J. Hultgren, Susan Wray, Theodor V. Burdyga, Craig Winstanley

School of Biomedical Sciences

BACKGROUND: Ureters are fundamental for keeping kidneys free from uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), but we have shown that 2 strains (J96 and 536) can subvert this role and reduce ureteric contractility. To determine whether this is (1) a widespread feature of UPEC, (2) exhibited only by UPEC, and (3) dependent upon type 1 fimbriae, we analyzed strains representing epidemiologically important multilocus sequence types ST131, ST73, and ST95 and non-UPEC E. coli. METHODS: Contractility and calcium transients in intact rat ureters were compared between strains. Mannose and fim mutants were used to investigate the role of type 1 fimbriae. RESULTS: Non-UPEC …

Immune Correlates Of Aging In Outdoor-Housed Captive Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta), Elizabeth S. Didier, Chie Sugimoto, Lisa C. Bowers, Imtiaz A. Khan, Marcelo J. Kuroda

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

Background

Questions remain about whether inflammation is a cause, consequence, or coincidence of aging. The purpose of this study was to define baseline immunological characteristics from blood to develop a model in rhesus macaques that could be used to address the relationship between inflammation and aging. Hematology, flow cytometry, clinical chemistry, and multiplex cytokine/chemokine analyses were performed on a group of 101 outdoor-housed captive rhesus macaques ranging from 2 to 24 years of age, approximately equivalent to 8 to 77 years of age in humans.

Results

These results extend earlier reports correlating changes in lymphocyte subpopulations and cytokines/chemokines with increasing …

Ngos, Soft Power, And Environmental Politics, Benjamin James Chambers Nov 2012

Ngos, Soft Power, And Environmental Politics, Benjamin James Chambers

Theses

This paper explores the connection between NGOs and the growing international environmental regime. It questions the role these groups have played in building international law, arguing that they use soft power to overcome the interests of states in negotiations. After providing background on the idea of soft power, the paper uses three case studies to demonstrate the argument: the Rio Declaration, the Montreal Protocol, and the Kyoto Protocol. The findings from these studies challenge realism and support a constructivist analysis of international regime-building.

CODEE Journal

The rapid development of technology in the latter part of the twentieth century has revolutionized the teaching of differential equations. In this paper we will try to trace the evolution of this important change. We tried to include the most important efforts in this regard, but we apologize in advance if some efforts have slipped our attention.
