Irruptive Migration Of Chestnut-Backed Chickadees To Southwestern Idaho, Jay D. Carlisle
Irruptive Migration Of Chestnut-Backed Chickadees To Southwestern Idaho, Jay D. Carlisle
Intermountain Bird Observatory Publications and Presentations
I document irruptive movements of the Chestnut-backed Chickadee to Lucky Peak in southwestern Idaho, over 80 km from its regular range. Chestnut-backed Chickadees were captured and/or observed at Lucky Peak in 2000, 2004, and 2008. To evaluate the context for this phenomenon, I also examined data on capture of all chickadees and other irruptive species at Lucky Peak and numbers of irruptive species recorded on Idaho Christmas Bird Counts (CBC) from 1997 to 2011. Though CBCs in the winter of 2004–05 (following the largest movement of Chestnut-backed Chickadees at Lucky Peak in fall 2004) found high numbers of many irruptive …

Aquatic Invertebrates Resource Brief, Lusha Tronstad, Marcia Wilson
Aquatic Invertebrates Resource Brief, Lusha Tronstad, Marcia Wilson
United States National Park Service: Publications
Aquatic invertebrates have been collected along the Niobrara River at Agate Fossil Beds NM since 1989 using Hester-Dendy samplers. These samplers consist of 9 plates that are colonized by invertebrates while they are suspended in the water for 30 days. Aquatic invertebrates are typically identified to genus and counted. Bioassessment metrics are calculated based on invertebrate data to estimate ecosystem health. One bioassessment metric is Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) richness, which counts the number of taxa that are mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies. Insects in these orders tend to be sensitive to ecosystem health, thus more EPT means better ecosystem …
Aquatic Invertebrate Monitoring At Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Lusha Tronstad
Aquatic Invertebrate Monitoring At Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Lusha Tronstad
United States National Park Service: Publications
Aquatic invertebrates are excellent animals to use for monitoring ecosystem quality; however, how to sample aquatic invertebrates for such monitoring efforts is a central question. All samplers have advantages and disadvantages, and finding the sampler that minimizes bias and fulfills the objectives is crucial. The ecosystem quality of the Niobrara River at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument has been measured for 15 years using aquatic invertebrates colonizing Hester-Dendy samplers. These artificial substrate samplers are useful in rivers that are difficult to sample, but previous studies demonstrated that they bias results toward certain insect orders. Additionally, large debris dams formed upstream …

Chinese Patents As Copyrights, 34 Campbell L. Rev. 685 (2012), Benjamin Liu
UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship
Although harmonization efforts such as the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and the Patent Corporation Treaty regime have brought national patent systems closer, differences among them remain a continuing challenge to innovators in an interconnected global marketplace. The recent development of the Chinese patent system is of particular interest because China is the factory of the world, the most populous market, the home of the patent office that handles the most patent application filings, and the number one source of imports that violate intellectual property rights (IPR). Its patent system affects every company whose supply chain, …

Prmt5 And The Role Of Symmetrical Dimethylarginine In Chromatoid Bodies Of Planarian Stem Cells, Labib Rouhana, Ana P. Vieira, Rachel H. Roberts-Galbraith, Phillip A. Newmark
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Planarian flatworms contain a population of adult stem cells (neoblasts) that proliferate and generate cells of all tissues during growth, regeneration and tissue homeostasis. A characteristic feature of neoblasts is the presence of chromatoid bodies, large cytoplasmic ribonucleoprotein (RNP) granules morphologically similar to structures present in the germline of many organisms. This study aims to reveal the function, and identify additional components, of planarian chromatoid bodies. We uncover the presence of symmetrical dimethylarginine (sDMA) on chromatoid body components and identify the ortholog of protein arginine methyltransferase PRMT5 as the enzyme responsible for sDMA modification in these proteins. RNA interference-mediated depletion …

Ecogeographic Patterns Of Morphological Variation In Elepaios (Chasiempis Spp.): Bergmann's, Allen's, And Gloger's Rules In A Microcosm, Eric A. Vanderwerf
Ornithological Monographs
Animals often exhibit predictable geographic variation in morphology, and such ecogeographic patterns reflect local adaptation to varying environmental conditions. The most common of these patterns are termed Bergmann's, Allen's, and Gloger's rules. I studied morphological variation in the Hawaii Elepaio (Chasiempis sandwichensis) and the Oahu Elepaio (C. ibidis), forest birds endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. I measured body size and plumage color of 223 live elepaios captured at 36 sites on Hawaii and 132 live elepaios captured at 23 sites on Oahu, and I examined 132 museum specimens from an additional 22 locations on Hawaii. I used multiple regressions to …

The Gift: Synesthesia In Translingual Texts, Natasha Lvovich
The Gift: Synesthesia In Translingual Texts, Natasha Lvovich
Publications and Research
This article explores the relationship between multilingualism and synesthesia (neuro-psychological blend of senses). In the absence of research in any of the related fields, the author (a multilingual, a L2 scholar, a writer, and a synesthete all at once) views synesthesia through the lens of “translingual texts” written in L2 by multilingual authors and takes an interdisciplinary perspective, fusing L2 scholarship, cognitive theory, neuroscience, literary theory, and semiotics to investigate the complexities and subjectivities of the multilingual mind. ‘Translingual synesthesia’ appears to represent an idiosyncratic form of language emotionality and creativity, allowing translingual authors to transcend cognitive and linguistic realms …

Interrogating Texts: From Deferent To Efferent And Aesthetic Reading Practices, Cheryl Hogue Smith
Publications and Research
This article offers a revised version of transactional reading theory to explain how students classified as basic writers tend to employ counterproductive reading and thinking processes that inhibit them from full participation in academic life. Louise Rosenblatt proposes that readers have two main positions or purposes in reading—the efferent stance, where readers focus on the information in a text, and the aesthetic stance, where readers focus on the experience they have with a text. This article describes a third, deferent stance of reading that many basic writers adopt when they defer their interpretations of texts to other readers or defer …

Standardised Classification Of Pre-Release Development In Male-Brooding Pipefish, Seahorses, And Seadragons (Family Syngnathidae), Stefan Sommer, Camilla M. Whittington, Anthony B. Wilson
Publications and Research
Background: Members of the family Syngnathidae share a unique reproductive mode termed male pregnancy. Males carry eggs in specialised brooding structures for several weeks and release free-swimming offspring. Here we describe a systematic investigation of pre-release development in syngnathid fishes, reviewing available data for 17 species distributed across the family. This work is complemented by in-depth examinations of the straight-nosed pipefish Nerophis ophidion, the black-striped pipefish Syngnathus abaster, and the potbellied seahorse Hippocampus abdominalis.
Results: We propose a standardised classification of early syngnathid development that extends from the activation of the egg to the release of newborn. The classification consists …

BYU Studies
In the 1950s, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints considered creating BYU satellite campuses around the western United States and asked BYU President Ernest Wilkinson to recommend locations. At the same time, Stanford researcher Howard Nielson created a careful projection of future demand for wood in America that drew much attention. Wilkinson hired Nielson to create a projection of future growth of the Church and demand for a BYU education. Upon learning that Nielson was a member of the Church, Wilkinson invited him to join the faculty of BYU, and the BYU Department of Statistics was …

The Medical Practice Of Dr. Frederick G. Williams, Frederick G. Williams
BYU Studies
Frederick Granger Williams (1787-1842) was a leader in the early days of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but also served as a justice of the peace, scribe, editor, and medical practitioner. In the early nineteenth century, the medical profession was in its infancy, beginning a slow shift from barbaric practices (generally bleeding and calomel) to herbal treatments that were at least mild if not particularly effective. Dr. Williams conscientiously followed the botanic methods and theories of Samuel S. Thomson, who published a book (The Thomsonian Materia Medica) and sold patents to those who read his …

Placement And Sizing Of Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator Using Pso Based Technique For Loss Minimization, S.A. Jumaat, I. Musirin, M.M. Othman, Hazlie Mokhlis
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Minimizing the transmission loss in power system is one of the important issues in power system research these days. Transmission loss can be reduced by installing reactive power compensation components. Installing the thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC) in power system has been known to increase the voltage level in the system and hence reduce the system losses. This paper describes placement and sizing of FACTS devices based on Particle Swarm Optimization for minimization of transmission loss considering voltage profile and cost function. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is one of the artificial intelligent search approaches which have the potential in solving …

Prevalence And Characterization Of Multidrug-Resistant And Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-Producing Escherichia Coli From Pediatric Wards Of A Malaysian Hospital, W.S. Ho, G. Balan, S. Puthucheary, B.H. Kong, K.T. Lim, L.K. Tan, X.P. Koh, C.C. Yeo, Kwai Lin Thong
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
The emergence of Escherichia coli resistant to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs) is of concern as ESC is often used to treat infections by Gram-negative bacteria. One-hundred and ten E. coli strains isolated in 2009-2010 from children warded in a Malaysian tertiary hospital were analyzed for their antibiograms, carriage of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and AmpC genes, possible inclusion of the beta-lactamase genes on an integron platform, and their genetic relatedness. All E. coli strains were sensitive to carbapenems. About 46 of strains were multidrug resistant (MDR; i.e., resistant to >= 3 antibiotic classes) and almost half (45) were nonsusceptible to ESCs. Among …

Quorum Quenching Revisited-From Signal Decays To Signalling Confusion, Kar Wai Hong, Chong Lek Koh, Choon Kook Sam, Wai Fong Yin, Kok Gan Chan
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
In a polymicrobial community, while some bacteria are communicating with neighboring cells (quorum sensing), others are interrupting the communication (quorum quenching), thus creating a constant arms race between intercellular communication. In the past decade, numerous quorum quenching enzymes have been found and initially thought to inactivate the signalling molecules. Though this is widely accepted, the actual roles of these quorum quenching enzymes are now being uncovered. Recent evidence extends the role of quorum quenching to detoxification or metabolism of signalling molecules as food and energy source; this includes "signalling confusion", a term coined in this paper to refer to the …
