Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Ribeye, strip loin and top sirloin butt subprimals were either fast or slow frozen and then fast or slow thawed. Steaks were cut, placed in retail display for 8 days, and compared to fresh-never-frozen product for retail color and purge loss. Thaw purge loss was higher for slow thawed subprimals, with fast thawed product having the greatest purge loss during display. Overall, total purge loss was roughly 2-5% higher for all slow thawed products. Color data indicated frozen-thawed beef subprimals are comparable to fresh-never-frozen subprimals in color stability during day 1-4 of retail display. Total purge loss was increased for …

Effects Of Ramp™ On Feed Intake And Ruminal Ph During Adaptation To Finishing Diets, Cody J. Schneider, Adam L. Shreck, Galen E. Erickson Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 2012

Effects Of Ramp™ On Feed Intake And Ruminal Ph During Adaptation To Finishing Diets, Cody J. Schneider, Adam L. Shreck, Galen E. Erickson Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A metabolism trial was conducted using an adaption strategy where RAMP inclusion was decreased (100 to 0%) while increasing inclusion of the finishing ration (0 to 100%) was compared to a traditional adaption (Control) where alfalfa hay inclusion was decreased (45 to 7.5%) while increasing corn. Adapting cattle with RAMP increased DMI, had no effect on average pH, pH variance, or magnitude of change compared to Control. Grain adaption with RAMP is a viable alternative to traditional grain adaptation.

Department of Emergency Medicine

Background. A substantial proportion of the annual 875,000 childhood unintentional injury deaths occur in the home. Very few printed tools are available in South Asia for disseminating home injury prevention information. Methods. Three tools were planned: an injury hazard assessment tool appropriate for a developing country setting, an educational pamphlet highlighting strategies for reducing home injury hazards, and an in-home safety tutorial program to be delivered by a trained community health worker. Results. The three tools were successfully developed. Two intervention neighborhoods in Karachi, Pakistan, were mapped. The tools were pretested in this local setting and are now ready for …

Effects Of Betel Nut On Cardiovascular Risk Factors In A Rat Model, Mohammad Perwaiz Iqbal, Naseema Mehboobali, Ghulam Haider, Shahid Pervez, Iqbal Azam Jan 2012

Effects Of Betel Nut On Cardiovascular Risk Factors In A Rat Model, Mohammad Perwaiz Iqbal, Naseema Mehboobali, Ghulam Haider, Shahid Pervez, Iqbal Azam

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Background: Areca nut (commonly known as betel nut) chewing has been shown to be associated with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The mechanism by which betel nut ingestion could lead to development of CVD is not precisely known; however, dyslipidemia, hyperhomocysteinemia, hypertriglyceridemia and inflammation could be some of the potential risk factors. This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of two dosages of betel nut on homocysteinemia, inflammation and some of the components of metabolic syndrome, such as hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL-cholesterol, obesity and fasting hyperglycemia in a rat model.
Methods: Thirty-six adult female Sprague Dawley rats, aged 10–12 …

Ethnopharmacological Studies On Chrozophora Prostrata In Perspective Of Its Folkloric Reputation As Purgative, Usman Arshad, Khalid Hussain Janbaz, Samra Bashir, Najeeb-Ur- Rehman, Hassan Mehmood, Anwar-Ul-Hassan Gilani Jan 2012

Ethnopharmacological Studies On Chrozophora Prostrata In Perspective Of Its Folkloric Reputation As Purgative, Usman Arshad, Khalid Hussain Janbaz, Samra Bashir, Najeeb-Ur- Rehman, Hassan Mehmood, Anwar-Ul-Hassan Gilani

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

This study was undertaken to validate the medicinal use of Chrozophora prostrata in constipation. The crude extract of C prostrata produced laxative effect in mice at 100 and 300 mg/kg, similar to carbachol and castor oil. In spontaneously contracting rabbit jejunum tissues, C. prostrata (0.01-3 mg/mL) exhibited atropine-sensitive spasmogenic effect, which was reproducible in guinea-pig ileum. Interestingly, at high concentrations, C. prostrata showed concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on rabbit jejunum, suggesting the presence of accompanied spasmolytic activity. When tested on induced contractions, C. prostrata completely relaxed low K+-induced contraction, while partially inhibited high K+, similar to cromakalim. Tetraethylammonium pretreatment abolished the …

Is It Choice Or Is It Interest?: The Effect Of Choice And Interest On The Cognitive And Affective Engagement Of Elementary Students Performing A Reading Task, Jerilyn Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The author replicated and extended a study by Flowerday, Schraw, & Stevens (2004) that examined the effects of choice, topic interest, and situational interest on reading engagement, attitude, and learning in college-age students. The study was replicated using fourth and fifth graders as subjects. The study was extended to examine the effects of gender and reading ability cohort on the outcome measures. Participants randomly assigned to the choice condition made a blind choice of Packet A or B containing a non-fiction essay to read; participants assigned to the no choice condition were given one of the packets without being offered …

Theological And Liturgical Dimensions Of Ecclesial Authorization For U.S. Catholic Lay Ecclesial Ministers, Mary Beth Yount Jan 2012

Theological And Liturgical Dimensions Of Ecclesial Authorization For U.S. Catholic Lay Ecclesial Ministers, Mary Beth Yount

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work provides steps toward a practical understanding of the changing ministerial relationships in the U.S. Catholic Church given the rapid increase in lay ecclesial ministers ("LEMs") and decline in ordained priests. New ecclesial relationships develop through shifts in ecclesial ministry; formalizing these new relationships, the study argues, will allow for smoother transitions in parishes and a deeper theological understanding of the Church as a whole.

After outlining and exploring the Church's theological understandings of LEMs as called, having a particular vocation, and able to provide us with unique contributions, the author posits that liturgical celebrations for installing LEMs can …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Wet distillers grains contain approximately 65% moisture. A partially dried product (modified distillers grains plus solubles; MDGS) contains about 50% moisture. However, both have similar nutrient composition on a dry matter basis. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of finishing diets varying in concentration of MDGS on marbling attributes, proximate composition, and fatty acid profile of beef. Yearling steers (n = 268) were randomly allotted to 36 pens which were assigned randomly to 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% MDGS (DM basis) and fed for 176 d prior harvest. Forty-eight h postmortem marbling score, …

Today's Kids Need The Classics Too, Lorraine Wallace Jan 2012

Today's Kids Need The Classics Too, Lorraine Wallace

The Utah English Journal

It is no secret that 21st Century adolescents are reading less than their parents and grandparents did. Because modern technology has tapped into teens’ craving for color, action, and sound, books have a hard time competing with the X-box and the Wii. The “gotta have it quick and easy” attitude of today’s teens and young adults seems to make reading anything of substance, involving depth of thought or processing time, a pastime gone the way of wringer washers and push mowers.

So how do secondary English teachers who want their students to read tap into the insatiable appetite teens have …

Improving The Discoverability Of Scholarly Content In The Twenty-First Century: Collaboration Opportunities For Librarians, Publishers, And Vendors, A Sage White Paper, Mary M. Somerville, Barbara J. Schader, John Sack Jan 2012

Improving The Discoverability Of Scholarly Content In The Twenty-First Century: Collaboration Opportunities For Librarians, Publishers, And Vendors, A Sage White Paper, Mary M. Somerville, Barbara J. Schader, John Sack

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

Discoverability is a popular buzzword—ultimately meaning the degree to which scholars can locate the content needed to advance their research and other creative activity. Improved user discovery experiences require heightened collaboration among (1) scholarly publishers and their published authors; (2) search engine developers, database providers, abstracting and indexing services, and academic publishers; (3) electronic resource management and integrated library system vendors; and (4) librarians who advance institutional discoverability. Drawing from interviews with value chain experts, results of research studies, and insights from scholarly literature, this white paper assesses the currently fragmented discovery environment and proposes cross-sector conversations to further visibility …

The Patchwork Principle Against Self-Incrimination Under The Charter, Lisa Dufraimont Jan 2012

The Patchwork Principle Against Self-Incrimination Under The Charter, Lisa Dufraimont

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

The principle against self-incrimination refers to the idea that an individual cannot be compelled to assist in her own prosecution. In the pre-Charter era, the view prevailed that no overarching principle against self-incrimination existed in Canadian law. While certain discrete legal rules were recognized as protecting suspects against compulsory self-incrimination, these rules were not thought to reflect or constitute any independent, functional legal principle. Since the advent of the Charter, however, an overarching principle against self-incrimination has been recognized as one of the principles of fundamental justice. This constitutional principle has come to be understood as undergirding a number of …

Licensing And Access Problems Producers Of Video Games Face In Foreign Markets: A Case Study, Jason Ross Jan 2012

Licensing And Access Problems Producers Of Video Games Face In Foreign Markets: A Case Study, Jason Ross

UC Law SF International Law Review

Nearly a decade ago an American online video game called Everquest swept the world markets and generated enormous profits. Since then a genre of video games known as Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games has developed. Capitalizing on the genre's huge success, Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft (WoW) has catapulted gaming to new heights earning over USD $1 billion annually. While the game is sold globally, Chinese players account for nearly half of WoWs player base. Keeping this enormous market has, however, been challenging and for nearly two years Blizzard lost its market access in China.

Using Chinese WoW as …

Novelty-Assisted Interactive Evolution Of Control Behaviors, Brian G. Woolley Jan 2012

Novelty-Assisted Interactive Evolution Of Control Behaviors, Brian G. Woolley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The field of evolutionary computation is inspired by the achievements of natural evolution, in which there is no final objective. Yet the pursuit of objectives is ubiquitous in simulated evolution because evolutionary algorithms that can consistently achieve established benchmarks are lauded as successful, thus reinforcing this paradigm. A significant problem is that such objective approaches assume that intermediate stepping stones will increasingly resemble the final objective when in fact they often do not. The consequence is that while solutions may exist, searching for such objectives may not discover them. This problem with objectives is demonstrated through an experiment in this …

Evolution Through The Search For Novelty, Joel Lehman Jan 2012

Evolution Through The Search For Novelty, Joel Lehman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I present a new approach to evolutionary search called novelty search, wherein only behavioral novelty is rewarded, thereby abstracting evolution as a search for novel forms. This new approach contrasts with the traditional approach of rewarding progress towards the objective through an objective function. Although they are designed to light a path to the objective, objective functions can instead deceive search into converging to dead ends called local optima. As a significant problem in evolutionary computation, deception has inspired many techniques designed to mitigate it. However, nearly all such methods are still ultimately susceptible to deceptive local optima because they …
