Marcus Institute of Integrative Health Faculty Papers

Abstract Background: This study assesses changes in mood and anxiety in a cohort of subjects with memory loss who participated in an 8-week Kirtan Kriya meditation program. Perceived spirituality also was assessed. Previous reports from this cohort showed changes in cognitive function and cerebral blood flow (CBF). The purpose of this analysis was to assess outcome measures of mood and affect, and also spirituality, and to determine whether or not results correlated with changes in CBF.

Methods: Fifteen (15) subjects (mean age 62±7 years) with memory problems were enrolled in an 8-week meditation program. Before and after the 8-week meditation, …

Identification Of The Functional Binding Pocket For Compounds Targeting Small-Conductance Ca²⁺-Activated Potassium Channels., Miao Zhang, John M Pascal, Marcel Schumann, Roger S Armen, Ji-Fang Zhang

Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics Faculty Papers

Small- and intermediate-conductance Ca(2+)-activated potassium channels, activated by Ca(2+)-bound calmodulin, have an important role in regulating membrane excitability. These channels are also linked to clinical abnormalities. A tremendous amount of effort has been devoted to developing small molecule compounds targeting these channels. However, these compounds often suffer from low potency and lack of selectivity, hindering their potential for clinical use. A key contributing factor is the lack of knowledge of the binding site(s) for these compounds. Here we demonstrate by X-ray crystallography that the binding pocket for the compounds of the 1-ethyl-2-benzimidazolinone (1-EBIO) class is located at the calmodulin-channel interface. …

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

We have discovered an Aleuria Aurantia Lectin (AAL)-reactive immunoglobulin G (IgG) that naturally occurs in the circulation of rabbits and mice, following immune responses induced by various foreign antigens. AAL can specifically bind to fucose moieties on glycoproteins. However, most serum IgGs are poorly bound by AAL unless they are denatured or treated with glycosidase. In this study, using an immunogen-independent AAL-antibody microarray assay that we developed, we detected AAL-reactive IgG in the sera of all animals that had been immunized 1-2 weeks previously with various immunogens with and without adjuvants and developed immunogen-specific responses. All of these animals subsequently …

Gesture Use By Free-Living Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes) Related To Partner Attentional State, Glee Larsen Jan 2012

Gesture Use By Free-Living Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes) Related To Partner Attentional State, Glee Larsen

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Both in the wild and in captivity, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) use gesture to communicate with each other. The three modalities of gesture that chimpanzees use are auditory, tactile, and visual. Captive chimpanzees use gesture modalities appropriately according to the communicative partner's attentional state. A communicative partner is the target of the communicator's actions. A partner may be either paying attention (attending) or not paying attention (inattentive) to the chimpanzee who is attempting to communicate with them. The present study investigated whether a free-living population of chimpanzees use gesture modality appropriately to the partner's attentional state. Visual gestures depend …

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Epigenetic mechanisms impact several phenotypic traits and may be important for ecology and evolution. The introduced house sparrow (Passer domesticus) exhibits extensive phenotypic variation among and within populations. We screened methylation in populations from Kenya and Florida to determine if methylation varied among populations, varied with introduction history (Kenyan invasion < 50 years old, Florida invasion ~150 years old), and could potentially compensate for decrease genetic variation with introductions. While recent literature has speculated on the importance of epigenetic effects for biological invasions, this is the first such study among wild vertebrates. Methylation was more frequent in Nairobi, and outlier loci suggest that populations may be differentiated. Methylation diversity was similar between populations, in spite of known lower genetic diversity in Nairobi, which suggests that epigenetic variation may compensate for decreased genetic diversity as a source of phenotypic variation during introduction. Our results suggest that methylation differences may be common among house sparrows, but research is needed to discern whether methylation impacts phenotypic variation.

Trends In Hospital Admissions For Myocardial Infarcts For Women In Arizona, Florida And Maryland In 2000 To 2010, Rebecca Farmer Mcintyre Jan 2012

Trends In Hospital Admissions For Myocardial Infarcts For Women In Arizona, Florida And Maryland In 2000 To 2010, Rebecca Farmer Mcintyre

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Coronary arterial disease is the leading cause of death and morbidity in developing countries. Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has traditionally been considered a disease affecting mostly men, yet women are increasingly at risk due to obesity and diabetes. However, current trends in the AMI risk for women are not well understood. This study used archival data on hospital discharges from three states within the USA to examine the 10-year trend in presentations of patients to emergency rooms (ER) with a presenting diagnosis of chest pain and AMI, to document rate changes by gender over time. We observed a decreasing number …

Symptom Intrusiveness, Chronic Conditions And Health-Related Quality Of Life: Development Of Conceptual And Measurement Models, Jill Marie Monfre

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Background: The number of patients in the United States living with chronic conditions is increasing as patients are surviving conditions that were previously fatal. This increase in survival has resulted in a shift in the disease burden in the United States from infectious to chronic diseases. Many patients with chronic conditions experience associated symptoms that impact their health-related quality of life more significantly than those without associated symptoms. To enable patients to achieve what they determine to be an acceptable state of wellbeing, health care providers must first be aware of the factors and the relationships among the factors that …

The Influence Of The Method Of Cerebral Protection During Neonatal Cardiac Surgery On The Development Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Joseph J. Sistino Jan 2012

The Influence Of The Method Of Cerebral Protection During Neonatal Cardiac Surgery On The Development Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Joseph J. Sistino

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Complex congenital heart disease is a common birth defect requiring surgery soon after birth. Surgery can use a complete interruption of cerebral blood flow (DHCA) or it can be performed using regional low flow perfusion (RLFP). Either approach places the neonate at risk for oxygen deprivation resulting in neurodevelopmental impairment and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). RLFP has been widely adopted but its effect on ADHD has not been elucidated. We extracted surgical records data and surveyed parents of 5-16 year old children who had neonatal surgery using DHCA or RLFP in 1995-2006 to determine the prevalence of ADHD after DHCA …

Supplementing Gestating Beef Cows Grazing Cornstalk Residue, Jason M. Warner, Jeremy L. Martin, Zachary C. Hall Hall, Luke M. Kovarik, Kathryn J. Hanford, Richard J. Rasby, Mark Dragastin

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A 5-year study evaluated the effects of protein supplementation to beef cows grazing cornstalks in late gestation on both cow and calf weight, and the reproductive performance of heifer progeny. Supplementation improved cow BCS at the end of cornstalk grazing. Calf weight, cow pregnancy rates, and reproductive traits of subsequent heifer progeny were not impacted by supplementation. Supplementing mid- to late-gestation beef cows grazing cornstalks has minimal impact on cow performance or fetal programming of heifer progeny.

Effect Of Corn Stalk Grazing And Baling On Cattle Performance And Irrigation Needs, Simon Van Donk, Adam L. Mcgee, Terry J. Klopfenstein Klopfenstein, L. Aaron Stalker

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

The effects of removing corn residue by grazing and baling on continuous corn production were investigated. Initial data showed a trend toward keeping more water in the soil in the treatment with the most residue left on the field (no grazing or baling), but there was no effect of either grazing or baling on subsequent corn yield. Water conservation resulting from maintaining residue on the field may help reduce pumping costs or increase yields when water is limited. However, this benefit is likely to be outweighed by feed cost savings or grazing rental income, and good cow performance.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Corn plants were separated into seven different plant parts and analyzed for digestibility. Digestibility of the different parts of the plant ranged from 33.85% to 59.03%. The amount of highly digestible residue averaged 13.4 lb/ bu of grain. Digestibility and amount of residue has considerable impact on the stocking rate and performance of cattle on cornstalks. Subsequent crop yields were not affected by grazing.

Wheat Straw, Distillers Grains, And Beet Pulp For Late Gestation Beef Cows, Karla H. Jenkins, Matt K. Luebbe, Terry J. Klopfenstein Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

The feeding value of a mixture of 30:70 wet distillers grains:wheat straw or 20:20:60 wet distillers grains:beet pulp:wheat straw (DM) for late gestation beef cows was estimated. In Experiment 1, cows limit fed distillers grains and wheat straw gained as much weight and body condition as cows limit fed alfalfa hay. In Experiment 2, cows fed wet distillers grains and wheat straw or wet distillers grains, beet pulp, and wheat straw gained more weight and improved body condition compared with cows fed alfalfa hay. The results of these experiments indicate cows in late gestation will maintain body condition when limit …

Effect Of Calving Period On Heifer Progeny, Richard N. Funston, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Tonya L. Meyer, Dan M. Larson

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Records from 1997 through 2009 were used to determine the effect of calving date on ADG, reproduction, and first-calf characteristics in spring born heifer calves at University of Nebraska– Lincoln Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory. Heifers were classified as born in the first, second, or third 21- day period of the calving season. Heifer calves born during the first 21 days had greater weaning, pre-breeding, and pre-calving BW; greater percent cycling before breeding, and pregnancy rates compared to heifers born in the third period. First-calf progeny had earlier birth date and greater weaning BW. Calving period of heifer progeny impacts development and …

Late Gestation Supplementation Impacts Primiparous Beef Heifers And Progeny, Adam F. Summers, Stetson P. Weber, Tonya L. Meyer, Richard N. Funston

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A two-year study utilizing primiparous heifers evaluated the influence of rumen undegradable protein (RUP) supplement level on heifer and progeny performance. Heifers were individually fed meadow hay and no supplement (CON), 1.8 lb/day (DM) dried distillers based (HIGH) supplement, or 1.8 lb/day (DM) dried corn gluten feed based (LOW) supplement during late gestation. Heifers from HIGH and LOW groups had greater final BW, DMI, ADG, and G:F compared to CON heifers. Calves from HIGH dams had greater pre-breeding BW and LOW calves had greater weaning BW compared to CON calves. Feedlot initial BW was greater for HIGH and LOW calves …
