The Bronx, Beavers And Birthrights: The Case For Urban Wildlife, Richard Day Jan 2012

The Bronx, Beavers And Birthrights: The Case For Urban Wildlife, Richard Day

Student Theses 2001-2013

The subject of animals’ rights has received a fair amount of attention over the years. Philosophers and activists alike have set out to ensure that animals in the wild and in other settings such as factory farms enjoy at least a bare minimum of rights and protections. While these are undoubtedly noble causes, they do leave a great deal to be desired. Almost always left out of these philosophical and moral debates are animals such as squirrels, pigeons, raccoons and the like – urban wildlife, if you will. Because of our constant exposure to them, or perhaps because they …

Simulating Climate Risk Into Markets And Policies: A New Approach To Financial Analysis And Policy Formation, Miguel Bantigue Jan 2012

Simulating Climate Risk Into Markets And Policies: A New Approach To Financial Analysis And Policy Formation, Miguel Bantigue

Student Theses 2001-2013

Widely considered to be the next big industry boom, the sustainability trend and the multiplier effect it will carry to other industry sectors are being compared to the significance and impact of the industrialization age. To list a few categories under the main framework of sustainability are renewable energy, energy storage, waste management, and water conservation. Of these, renewable energy and water conservation are the most important. Energy is the backbone of any economy, and water is the most important commodity – not only does water sustain life, there is also no known alternative. Although effort has been made to …

A Stronger Role For The United States President In Environmental Policy, Elizabeth Anderson Jan 2012

A Stronger Role For The United States President In Environmental Policy, Elizabeth Anderson

Student Theses 2001-2013

"The golden era of environmental lawmaking, in which 22 major federal laws were passed between 1964 and 1980, has been followed by a long period of legislative gridlock, increased partisan contention over environmental policy, and growing frustration on the part of environmentalists." These golden-era laws do not significantly address many issues that are prevalent in today's globalized environment, and federal statutes remain silent on the paramount issue of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These issues did not fall within the ambit of the laws adopted in the 1960s and 1970s, and in the era of legislative gridlock, it has been difficult …

The Economic And Environmental Justice Implications Of Hydraulic Fracturing In 21st Century North America, Katie Medved Jan 2012

The Economic And Environmental Justice Implications Of Hydraulic Fracturing In 21st Century North America, Katie Medved

Student Theses 2001-2013

The term “energy crisis” has been a circulating topic in societal discourse recently as the political, economic, and environmental future of the United States is considered. As a result of the Industrial Revolution, the country’s dependency on energy has been increasing exponentially as we rely on it as a means for societal and international advancement. For decades America has primarily used coal and oil to run our country – individuals, businesses, homes, companies, industrial sites, stores, restaurants, etc. etc. cannot function without them. Lights, laptops, toasters, heaters, cars, movies, everything from menial everyday tasks to multi-national investments utilize and rely …

Lost In Translation: Environmental Communication Issues In Media And Politics, Carolyn Wegemann Jan 2012

Lost In Translation: Environmental Communication Issues In Media And Politics, Carolyn Wegemann

Student Theses 2001-2013

Organizations such as the Sierra Club, the Audubon Society, the Boone and Crockett club, women's clubs throughout the nation, and individuals like Theodore Roosevelt, Rachel Carson, John Muir, and Richard Nixon understood the idea that human life negatively affects the environment, and used their talents and connections to solve numerous major environmental concerns. From Roosevelt's role in the creation of National Parks, to Muir's involvement in the preservation of Yosemite Valley among other notable efforts, to Rachel Carson's groundbreaking book Silent Spring that singlehandedly led to the ban of the DDT pesticide, environmentalism in the 19th and 20th centuries was …

Group For The East End: The Role Of Childhood Environmental Education In Improving Learning Behaviors And The Health Of Humans And The Environment, Brian Riley Jan 2012

Group For The East End: The Role Of Childhood Environmental Education In Improving Learning Behaviors And The Health Of Humans And The Environment, Brian Riley

Student Theses 2001-2013

As far back as I can remember the east end of Long Island has been a favorite vacation destination for my family. Taking a ride “out east” in the spring to pick strawberries and in the fall to fill the trunk with pumpkins were annual events for our family. In the summer months we would visit friends of mine, fortunate enough to own vacation homes on the North Fork, to enjoy a multitude of water sports and beach activities on and alongside the Great Peconic Bay. Yet, beyond these lifelong memories, the aspect which truly amazes me has been the …

The Bottling Craze: Exposing The Environmental Effects Of Bottled Vs. Tap Water, Michele Paccagnini Jan 2012

The Bottling Craze: Exposing The Environmental Effects Of Bottled Vs. Tap Water, Michele Paccagnini

Student Theses 2001-2013

Americans take water for granted on a daily basis when they can go to the vending machine or grocery store and pick up a cold bottle of water to enjoy. What people do not normally consider is where this water comes from or what chemicals are used to make the plastic bottle. Some may believe that they are doing something noteworthy when choosing a brand like Poland Spring that boasts “30% less plastic” used in their product, along with choosing a brand that uses smaller labels to save paper. The Poland Spring website claims that they are “drop by drop…one …

Faculty Scholarship

Recent genetic analysis has shown that the extinct Caspian Tiger (P. t. virgata) and the living Amur Tigers (P. t. altaica) of the Russian Far East are actually taxonomically synonymous and that Caspian and Amur groups historically formed a single population, only becoming separated within the last 200 years by human agency. A major conservation implication of this finding is that tigers of Amur stock might be reintroduced, not only back into the Koreas and China as is now proposed, but also through vast areas of Central Asia where the Caspian tiger once lived. However, under the current tiger conservation …

A Dull Enigma: Historians' Analysis Of Gilbert And Sullivan's Impact On The Development Of The American Musical, Andrew Vorder Bruegge Jan 2012

A Dull Enigma: Historians' Analysis Of Gilbert And Sullivan's Impact On The Development Of The American Musical, Andrew Vorder Bruegge

College of Visual and Performing Arts Faculty Publications

Historians of musical theatre have been ambivalent when assessing the historical significance of Gilbert and Sullivan upon the development of the American musical. Historical narratives typically jump from The Black Crook to Friml, with only passing reference to G&S (and Offenbach, and Strauss). Gilbert and Sullivan (encouraged by D’Oyly Carte), however, anticipated not only most of the formal elements, but also many of the creative/production processes of the American musical genre. The shows that we associate with the “Golden Era” of the American musical theatre contain many components that G&S devised three score years earlier. Historians should acknowledge the importance …

More Than Just Nonsense Verse?: The Language Of Dr. Seuss And Children's Literacy, Nicole Hewes Jan 2012

More Than Just Nonsense Verse?: The Language Of Dr. Seuss And Children's Literacy, Nicole Hewes

Senior Scholar Papers

In this Senior Scholars project I wanted to demonstrate that Dr. Seuss books are much more than just nonsense verse. For the first part of my project, I familiarized myself with all of his texts and scrutinized his use of language in a textual analysis. By scrutinizing Geisel’s use of language and wordplay, I hoped to isolate some characteristics that make a Seuss book different from other types of stories and texts. The second part of my project was an empirical study that tested what influence reading a real Seuss text versus a fake Seuss text has on students’ performance …

Of Ticks, Mice And Men: Understanding The Dual-Host Lifestyle Of Lyme Disease Spirochaetes, Justin D. Radolf, Melissa J. Caimano Jan 2012

Of Ticks, Mice And Men: Understanding The Dual-Host Lifestyle Of Lyme Disease Spirochaetes, Justin D. Radolf, Melissa J. Caimano

UCHC Articles - Research

In little more than 30 years, Lyme disease, which is caused by the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi, has risen from relative obscurity to become a global public health problem and a prototype of an emerging infection. During this period, there has been an extraordinary accumulation of knowledge on the phylogenetic diversity, molecular biology, genetics and host interactions of B. burgdorferi. In this Review, we integrate this large body of information into a cohesive picture of the molecular and cellular events that transpire as Lyme disease spirochaetes transit between their arthropod and vertebrate hosts during the enzootic cycle.

Upregulation Of Fibronectin And The Α5Β1 And Αvβ3 Integrins On Blood Vessels Within The Cerebral Ischemic Penumbra, Louise D. Mccullough, Fudong Liu Jan 2012

Upregulation Of Fibronectin And The Α5Β1 And Αvβ3 Integrins On Blood Vessels Within The Cerebral Ischemic Penumbra, Louise D. Mccullough, Fudong Liu

UCHC Articles - Research

Following focal cerebral ischemia, blood vessels in the ischemic border, or penumbra, launch an angiogenic response. In light of the critical role for fibronectin in angiogenesis, and the observation that fibronectin and its integrin receptors are strongly upregulated on angiogenic vessels in the hypoxic CNS, the aim of this study was to establish whether angiogenic vessels in the ischemic CNS also show this response. Focal cerebral ischemia was established in C57/Bl6 mice by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCA:O), and brain tissue analyzed seven days following re-perfusion, a time at which angiogenesis is ongoing. Within the ischemic core, immunofluorescent (IF) studies …

Bone Tissue Engineering: Recent Advances And Challenges, Ami R. Amini, Cato T. Laurencin, Syam P. Nukavarapu

UCHC Articles - Research

The worldwide incidence of bone disorders and conditions has trended steeply upward and is expected to double by 2020, especially in populations where aging is coupled with increased obesity and poor physical activity. Engineered bone tissue has been viewed as a potential alternative to the conventional use of bone grafts, due to their limitless supply and no disease transmission. However, bone tissue engineering practices have not proceeded to clinical practice due to several limitations or challenges. Bone tissue engineering aims to induce new functional bone regeneration via the synergistic combination of biomaterials, cells, and factor therapy. In this review, we …

It's Complicated: Privacy And Domestic Violence, Kimberly D. Bailey Jan 2012

It's Complicated: Privacy And Domestic Violence, Kimberly D. Bailey

All Faculty Scholarship

This Article challenges the notion that there is no role for privacy in the domestic violence context. Privacy is a complicated concept that has both positive and negative aspects, and this Article examines the value that more privacy could provide for domestic violence victims. While privacy was historically used as a shield for batterers, more privacy for domestic violence victims could protect their personhood, ensuring that they are treated with dignity and respect. In addition, current mandatory criminal justice policies have become so intrusive in many victims’ lives that limitations are needed to prevent the threat of state abuse. These …

Incentivizing The Utilization Of Pharmacogenomics In Drug Development, Valerie Gutmann Koch Jan 2012

Incentivizing The Utilization Of Pharmacogenomics In Drug Development, Valerie Gutmann Koch

All Faculty Scholarship

Pharmacogenomics, the study and development of compounds according to how an individual’s genes affects the body’s response to drugs, holds enormous promise for increasing the safety and efficiency of drug development while decreasing adverse reactions and the trial-and-error nature of drug prescription. However, pharmacogenomics may not be the panacea for all development and prescription problems. This article explores some of the obstacles to pharmacogenomic advancement including industry reluctance to pursue research because of potentially prohibitive costs associated with developing products and legal liability concerns. The implications pharmacogenomics has for drug research and development as well as various areas of law …

Exploring The Need For Improvement In A Student Leadership Program, Gregory Hine Jan 2012

Exploring The Need For Improvement In A Student Leadership Program, Gregory Hine

Education Papers and Journal Articles

Despite the importance of adolescent leadership development, little research has examined how to improve such programs within a school context. The intention of this article is to explore how one Catholic secondary school developed leadership potential in young adolescents, and how such efforts can be refned and improved in the future. The primary methods for collecting data included focus groups interviews, researcher field notes, and researcher reflective journaling. Based upon these data, the author conceptualised the strengths and shortcomings of the program of leadership being pursued consciously or implicitly by the school, by examining the perspectives held by those students …

Preclinical Determinants Of Drug Choice Under Concurrent Schedules Of Drug Self-Administration, Matthew L. Banks, S. Stevens Negus Jan 2012

Preclinical Determinants Of Drug Choice Under Concurrent Schedules Of Drug Self-Administration, Matthew L. Banks, S. Stevens Negus

Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications

Drug self-administration procedures have played a critical role in the experimental analysis of psychoactive compounds, such as cocaine, for over 50 years. While there are numerous permutations of this procedure, this paper will specifically focus on choice procedures using concurrent schedules of intravenous drug self-administration. The aims of this paper are to first highlight the evolution of drug choice procedures and then review the subsequent preclinical body of literature utilizing these choice procedures to understand the environmental, pharmacological, and biological determinants of the reinforcing stimulus effects of drugs. A main rationale for this paper is our proposition that choice schedules …
