Design Of A Lab Scale Direct-Filtration System And Its Application In Process Lab , Shichang Ma

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The Environmental Process and Simulation Center (EPSC) at Michigan Technological University started accommodating laboratories for an Environmental Engineering senior level class CEE 4509 Environmental Process and Simulation Laboratory since 2004. Even though the five units that exist in EPSC provide the students opportunities to have hands-on experiences with a wide range of water/wastewater treatment technologies, a key module was still missing for the student to experience a full cycle of treatment. This project fabricated a direct-filtration pilot system in EPSC and generated a laboratory manual for education purpose. Engineering applications such as clean bed head loss calculation, backwash flowrate determination, …

Abraham's Folly, William Paul Haas Jan 2012

Abraham's Folly, William Paul Haas

Community Scholar Publications

This study is a philosophical reflection, not a formal exegesis, on the text of Genesis 12-22, tracing the interaction between Abraham and God, which led gradually to the Akedah, the binding of Isaac on the altar of sacrifice. The study rests on the hypothesis that Abraham, under the wise tutelage of Yahweh, slowly discovered that he had profoundly misunderstood God, thinking that God, like all the other gods Abraham had known, would eventually demand the sacrifice of his son as a condition for his having any more offspring.

In the light of this assumption attention of given to the rich …

Low Dose Nicotine And Antagonism Of Β2 Subunit Containing Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Have Similar Effects On Affective Behavior In Mice, Shawn M. Anderson, Darlene H. Brunzell Jan 2012

Low Dose Nicotine And Antagonism Of Β2 Subunit Containing Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Have Similar Effects On Affective Behavior In Mice, Shawn M. Anderson, Darlene H. Brunzell

Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications

Nicotine leads to both activation and desensitization (inactivation) of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). This study tested the hypothesis that nicotine and a selective antagonist of β2*nAChRs would have similar effects on affective behavior. Adult C57BL/6J male mice were tested in a conditioned emotional response (CER) assay which evaluates the ability of an aversive stimulus to inhibit goal-directed behavior. Mice lever-pressed for a saccharin reinforcer according to a variable schedule of reinforcement during sessions in which two presentations of a compound light/tone conditioned stimulus (CS) co-terminated with a 0.1 or 0.3 mA, 0.5 s footshock unconditioned stimulus (US). During testing in …

A Manipulation Of Visual Feedback During Gait Training In Parkinson’S Disease, Quincy J. Almeida, Haseel Bhatt Jan 2012

A Manipulation Of Visual Feedback During Gait Training In Parkinson’S Disease, Quincy J. Almeida, Haseel Bhatt

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

Visual cues are known to improve gait in Parkinson’s disease (PD); however, the contribution of optic flow continues to be disputed. This study manipulated transverse line cues during two gait training interventions (6 weeks). PD subjects (N = 42) were assigned to one of three groups: treadmill (TG), overground (OG), or control group (CG). Participants walked across lines placed on either treadmills or 16-meter carpets, respectively. The treadmill (TG) offered a reduced dynamic flow from the environment, while lines presented on the ground (OG) emphasized optic flow related to the participant’s own displacement. Both interventions significantly improved (and maintained …

State-Induced Famine And Penal Starvation In North Korea, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann Jan 2012

State-Induced Famine And Penal Starvation In North Korea, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

Political Science Faculty Publications

This article discusses North Korea as a case of state-induced famine, or faminogenesis. A famine from 1994 to 2000 killed 3–5% of North Korea’s population, and mass hunger reappeared in 2010–2012, despite reforms meant to address the shortage of food. In addition, a prison population of about 200,000 people is systematically deprived of food; this might be considered penal starvation. There seems little recourse under international law to punish the perpetrators of state-induced famine and penal starvation. State-induced famine does, however, fit some of the criteria of genocide in the United Nations Convention against Genocide, and could also be considered …

The Effect Of An Enriched Environment And Cognitive Maturity On Long-Term Reactivation Of Object Recognition Memory In Male Sprague-Dawley Rats., Lisette Roman Jan 2012

The Effect Of An Enriched Environment And Cognitive Maturity On Long-Term Reactivation Of Object Recognition Memory In Male Sprague-Dawley Rats., Lisette Roman

Psychology Honors Papers

This study examined the effect of environment and cognitive maturity on longterm reactivation of recognition memory in rats. Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were housed in either an enriched environment or standard conditions. Animals were tested in the Novel Object Recognition (NOR) task as either adults or periadolescents. Results showed exposure to an enriched environment significantly increased the ability of animals to discriminate between a novel and a familiar object. Results also revealed that the impact of environmental enrichment was significant in adults but not in periadolescents. Immunohistochemical staining for the immediate-early gene products c-Fos and zif268 was performed to examine …

The Impact Of A Naturalistic Stressor On Spontaneous Alternation Behavior: A New Animal Model Of Ocd, Christina Finch Jan 2012

The Impact Of A Naturalistic Stressor On Spontaneous Alternation Behavior: A New Animal Model Of Ocd, Christina Finch

Behavioral Neuroscience Honors Papers

Over the past few decades, various animal models of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) have been developed. Similarly, various stressors have been used throughout animal research. The Spontaneous Alternation Behavioral (SAB) model is a well-established model of OCD while 2,5-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline (TMT) has recently become a popular naturalistic stressor. This study linked the two together, thus modeling the effect of stress on OCD behaviors. After living in an enriched or standard environment for 3 weeks, male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to either TMT or no odor, and then were examined in the SAB task. Unlike what was hypothesized, the enriched environment proved …

Religion And The Equal Protection Clause, Steven G. Calabresi, Abe Salander Jan 2012

Religion And The Equal Protection Clause, Steven G. Calabresi, Abe Salander

Faculty Working Papers

This article argues that state action that discriminates on the basis of religion is unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Doctrine even if it does not violate the Establishment Clause or the Free Exercise Clause as incorporated by the Fourteenth Amendment. State action that discriminates on the basis of religion should be subject to strict scrutiny and should almost always be held unconstitutional. We thus challenge the Supreme Court's recent decision in Christian Legal Society v. Martinez in which a 5 to 4 majority of the Court wrongly allowed a California state school to discriminate against a Christian Legal Society chapter …

Architecture and Urban Design

The new shelter should incorporate improved natural lighting and ventilation, adequate space for laundry facilities and more space for the animals' living and bathing needs. The design should consider how to prevent dogs from barking and disturbing one another while in the kennels. Increased storage is necessary for the animal shelter to contain the food and living amenities for the incoming animals.

There is an immense variety of privately owned businesses. They will be stakeholders because their businesses are located there, but they will also be assets in themselves in drawing people to the area. There is basically everything anyone could possible want or need in this area. There are two gas stations, a Family Dollar, a liquor store, a few sit down restaurants, numerous places where one can get a quick bite to eat, a frame shop, a clothing store, a pawn shop, a store with fresh produce (which is hard to find in urban areas), a store that sells sports …

Low Income Preschoolers' Non-Parental Care Experiences And Household Food Insecurity, Colleen Heflin, Irma Arteaga, Sara Gable Jan 2012

Low Income Preschoolers' Non-Parental Care Experiences And Household Food Insecurity, Colleen Heflin, Irma Arteaga, Sara Gable

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Rates of food insecurity in households with children have significantly increased over the past decade. The majority of children, including those at risk for food insecurity, participate in some form of non-parental child care during the preschool years. To evaluate the relationship between the two phenomenon, this study investigates the effects of child care arrangements on food insecurity in households with children. To address the selection bias problem that arises from the fact that enrollment in different types of child care is not a random process, this study uses propensity scores techniques. The authors compare outcomes across five child care …
