Transgressing Sexuality: An Interdisciplinary Study Of Economic History, Anthropology, And Queer Theory, Jason Gary Damron Nov 2012

Transgressing Sexuality: An Interdisciplinary Study Of Economic History, Anthropology, And Queer Theory, Jason Gary Damron

Dissertations and Theses

This interdisciplinary thesis examines the concept of sexuality through lenses provided by economic history, anthropology, and queer theory. A close reading reveals historical parallels from the late 1800s between concepts of a desiring, utility-maximizing economic subject on the one hand, and a desiring, carnally decisive sexological subject on the other. Social constructionists have persuasively argued that social and economic elites deploy the discourse of sexuality as a technique of discipline and social control in class- and gender-based struggles. Although prior scholarship discusses how contemporary ideas of sexuality reflect this origin, many anthropologists and queer theorists continue to use "sexuality" uncritically …

Effects Of Length Limits On Sexually Size Dimorphic Fishes, Peter J. Spirk Nov 2012

Effects Of Length Limits On Sexually Size Dimorphic Fishes, Peter J. Spirk

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Length limits are used by fishery managers as a method to alter size structure of fish populations. Unfortunately, biological differences between fish sexes (i.e., sexual-size dimorphism) may lead to sex-specific rates of recruitment, growth, and mortality. The addition of angler harvest to most aquatic systems likely accentuates differences in sex-specific rates by selectively harvesting the fastest-growing and largest fish from a population. The first objective of this study was to document the extent of sexual-size dimorphism for white bass and walleye at a Nebraska reservoir. Growth rates were similar between male and female white bass although male white bass were …

Ige Enhances B Cell-Derived Exosomal Induced T Cell Proliferation, Brooks Keith Nov 2012

Ige Enhances B Cell-Derived Exosomal Induced T Cell Proliferation, Brooks Keith

Theses and Dissertations

For many years it has been known that the injection of antigen bound to an antibody leads to more than a 1000-fold increase in antigen specific antibody response. This observation holds true for IgE, which is dependent upon CD23 expression, as this enhancement is not present in mice deficient in CD23. It also has been shown that when mice are injected with IgE-antigen complexes also display an increase in antigen specific T cell proliferation. While there are published studies that demonstrate a role for B cell derived exosomes in the activation and proliferation of T cells, none have focused upon …

The Effects Of River Sediment, Endosulfan, And Moderate Hypoxia On Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) From The Tidal, Freshwater James River, Laura Williams Nov 2012

The Effects Of River Sediment, Endosulfan, And Moderate Hypoxia On Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) From The Tidal, Freshwater James River, Laura Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Juvenile male blue crabs move into the tidal, freshwater James River during warmer months to feed and grow by undergoing molting. In crustaceans, growth and molting are hormonally controlled. The physiological effects of a multiple-stressor environment are determined by comparing the blue crab’s oxygen uptake after exposure to pure sand, James River sediment, or endosulfan-spiked sand. The effect of multiple stressors on molting is measured by the activity level of N-acetyl-ß-glucosaminidase (NAG), an enzyme in epidermal tissue important to molting. The oxygen uptake was decreased by exposure to James River sediment but not for exposure to endosulfan for seven days. …

Predicting Vehicle Dynamics For Roadside Safety Using Multibody Systems Simulations, Brett D. Schlueter Nov 2012

Predicting Vehicle Dynamics For Roadside Safety Using Multibody Systems Simulations, Brett D. Schlueter

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Accurate means for predicting vehicle dynamics is required in the design and testing of roadside safety hardware. Past research has used finite element (FE) modeling to this end, but multibody systems (MBS) modeling may provide a more efficient way to solve these problems. MBS modeling using Adams/Car was investigated by first compiling an introduction to the program, then performing basic vehicle dynamics simulations using a supplied model. Next, a model of a 2270 kg pickup was created and validated against physical test data involving impact with a speed bump. Finally, pickup trajectories in 4H:1V and 6H:1V V-ditches were predicted for …

Equity In International Experiential Learning: Assessing Benefits To Students And Host Communities, Erika D. Nelson, Thomas Klak Nov 2012

Equity In International Experiential Learning: Assessing Benefits To Students And Host Communities, Erika D. Nelson, Thomas Klak

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

This research uses participant observation and other qualitative methods to evaluate whether faculty-led short-term study abroad programs can successfully carry out responsible ‘fair trade’, and thereby substantially benefit not only students but also the host communities. The research draws insights by comparing two experiential learning courses taught in South Africa and Dominica. Results suggest that students benefit in various transformative ways in both courses, by applying sustainability and development studies concepts to real-life service and hands-on learning in cross-cultural situations. The Dominica course yields more host community benefits, however, because of the instructors’ long-term commitments to reciprocal partnerships and equitable …

Characterization Of Head Transcriptome And Analysis Of Gene Expression Involved In Caste Differentiation And Aggression In Odontotermes Formosanus (Shiraki), Qiuying Huang, Pengdong Sun, Xuguo Zhou, Chaoliang Lei

Entomology Faculty Publications

Background

The subterranean termite Odontotermes formosanus (Shiraki) is a serious insect pest of trees and dams in China. To date, very little is known about genomic or transcriptomic data for caste differentiation and aggression in O. formosanus. Hence, studies on transcriptome and gene expression profiling are helpful to better understand molecular basis underlying caste differentiation and aggressive behavior in O. formosanus.

Methodology and Principal Findings

Using the Illumina sequencing, we obtained more than 57 million sequencing reads derived from the heads of O. formosanus. These reads were assembled into 116,885 unique sequences (mean size = 536 bp). …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of community-associated and nosocomial infections. Imperative to the success of S. aureus is the ability to adapt and utilize nutrients that are readily available. Genomic sequencing suggests that S. aureus has the genes required for synthesis of all twenty amino acids. However, in vitro experimentation demonstrates that staphylococci have multiple amino acid auxotrophies, including arginine. Although S. aureus possesses the highly conserved anabolic pathway that synthesizes arginine via glutamate, we demonstrate here that inactivation of ccpA facilitates the synthesis of arginine via the urea cycle utilizing proline as a substrate. Mutations within putA, rocD, …

Comparison Of The Coleoptera Communities In Leaf Litter And Rotten Wood In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Usa, Michael L. Ferro, Matthew L. Gimmel, Kyle E. Harms, Christopher E. Carlton

Insecta Mundi

The community within extremely decayed downed coarse woody debris, here referred to as decay class V (CWD5), has never been systematically sampled. The presumption has been that rotten wood is eventually overrun by surrounding soil and litter inhabitants. Leaf litter and CWD5 were sampled for Coleoptera with a sifting/ Berlese technique at three primary and three secondary forest sites in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, USA, during fall 2006 and spring 2007. A total of 4261 adult beetle specimens, representing 216 lowest identifiable taxa within 159 genera and 28 families, were collected. Sixty-six species (31%) were represented by single …

Baud, Donald Reon. PhD. University of Memphis. December 2012. Leaf and Root Responses of Three Wetland Tree Species to Anthropogenic-generated Stressors. Major Professor: S. Reza Pezeshki.Published research to date has shown that anthropogenic-generated stressors, such as increased ultraviolet-B exposure, higher temperatures and the concomitant increase in herbivorous insect populations, as well as increased copper and ethanol contamination, are having a negative impact on plant growth and survival. However, there is a lack of data on the morphological and physiological responses woody wetland species. This series of independent, but related, experiments will focus on Salix nigra, Acer negundo, and Quercus phellos, …

Factors Affecting Infectivity And Pathogenicity Of Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis In Amphibians., Forrest Michael Brem Nov 2012

Factors Affecting Infectivity And Pathogenicity Of Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis In Amphibians., Forrest Michael Brem

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Wildlife diseases are a current threat to biodiversity, and amphibians have suffered the greatest disease-induced declines and extinctions in history. Chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has contributed to recent pandemic population declines and extinctions of amphibians. My dissertation focused on factors that affect infectivity and pathogenicity of Bd in amphibian hosts. I demonstrated variation in critical aspects of Bd biology between Bd isolates from different climates, Panama and the USA. Panamanian Bd had larger thalli, higher overall zoospore production, and longer duration of zoospore production than Bd from the USA. I also demonstrated time-dependent rates of …

Genetic And Demographic Patterns Of The Raccoon (Procyon Lotor) Across Extended Spatio-Temporal Scales, John R. Hisey Nov 2012

Genetic And Demographic Patterns Of The Raccoon (Procyon Lotor) Across Extended Spatio-Temporal Scales, John R. Hisey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Population features and genetic structure of raccoons (Procyon lotor) and many other solitary-mammalian species are relatively unknown. To better understand these characteristics in P. lotor, microsatellite data collected at local, area, and transcontinental scales and 14 years of local mark-recapture data were used to assess the temporal and spatial extent of philopatry, dispersal, formation of lineages, and genetic patterns associated with these factors. Specifically, I tested the following predictions for raccoons: (1) long-term residency is common; (2) patterns of genetic variation are associated with isolation by distance; (3) closely related animals remain spatially clustered. Only 26 of 215 P. lotor …
