Implications Of Observation-Fact Modifiers To I2b2 Ontologies, Jack W. London, Devjani Chatterjee Nov 2011

Implications Of Observation-Fact Modifiers To I2b2 Ontologies, Jack W. London, Devjani Chatterjee

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

Biomedical translational research can be facilitated by integrating clinical and research data. In particular, study cohort identification and hypothesis generation is enabled by the mining of integrated clinical observations and research resources. The "informatics for integrating biology and the bedside, " or i2b2, framework is widely used for this biomedical data mining. The i2b2 "star schema" data model using entity-attribute-value (EA V) formatted concepts is a very efficient strategy for querying large amounts of data. However, until the most recent i2b2 release, the utility of the platform was somewhat constrained by the limitations on being able to express "facts about …

A Model Checking Framework For Hierarchical Systems., Truong Khanh Nguyen, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong Nov 2011

A Model Checking Framework For Hierarchical Systems., Truong Khanh Nguyen, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

BDD-based symbolic model checking is capable of verifying systems with a large number of states. In this work, we report an extensible framework to facilitate symbolic encoding and checking of hierarchical systems. Firstly, a novel library of symbolic encoding functions for compositional operators (e.g., parallel composition, sequential composition, choice operator, etc.) are developed so that users can apply symbolic model checking techniques to hierarchical systems with little knowledge of symbolic encoding techniques (like BDD or CUDD). Secondly, as the library is language-independent, we build an extensible framework with various symbolic model checking algorithms so that the library can be easily …

Accommodation Or Deterrence In The Face Of Commercial Piracy: The Impact Of Intellectual Property Rights (Ipr) Protections, Yuanzhu Lu, Sougata Poddar Nov 2011

Accommodation Or Deterrence In The Face Of Commercial Piracy: The Impact Of Intellectual Property Rights (Ipr) Protections, Yuanzhu Lu, Sougata Poddar

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we address the issue of illegal copying or counterfeiting of the original product and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protections. The original product developer makes costly investment to deter piracy in a given regime of IPR protection. In the presence of a commercial pirate, we find that it is profitable for the original producer to accommodate the pirate when there is weak IPR protection, and deter when the IPR protection is strong. However, in the comparative statics analysis, we find that there is a non-monotonic relationship between the optimal level of deterrence (chosen by the original producer) and …

Good Teaching: Aligning Student And Administrator Perceptions And Expectations, Lazarus Nabaho, Joseph Oonyu, Jessica Norah Aguti Nov 2011

Good Teaching: Aligning Student And Administrator Perceptions And Expectations, Lazarus Nabaho, Joseph Oonyu, Jessica Norah Aguti

Higher Learning Research Communications

Literature attests to limited systematic inquiry into students’ conceptions of good teaching in higher education. Resultantly, there have been calls for engaging students in construing what makes good university teaching and in developing a richer conception of teaching excellence. This interpretivist study that is based on views of final year university students from six academic disciplines investigated students’ conceptions of good teaching at Makerere University in Uganda. Students conceived good teaching as being student-centred, demonstrating strong subject and pedagogical knowledge, being approachable, being responsive, being organised, and being able to communicate well. Most of the conceptions of good teaching hinge …

The Undergraduate In The Repository: Connecting The Dots, Stephanie Davis-Kahl

Key to Unlocking Scholarship: Institutional Repositories

The focus of this session will be on how the institutional repository can be used as a foundation for educating undergraduate students about issues surrounding open access, author rights and copyright, and how libraries can embed these concepts in information literacy sessions as well as in outreach efforts throughout the academic year. Several initiatives by IWU to highlight undergraduate work will be discussed.

Beyond Faculty Publications And Etds, Patricia Wilson, Wayne Lewis

Key to Unlocking Scholarship: Institutional Repositories

For the most part new institutional repositories start out with little content. During this session, Pat Wilson will focus on the strategic partnerships she has made that are opening doors and leading to content in addition to faculty publications, theses, and dissertations. One of those partnerships produced a new journal, Kentucky Journal of Higher Education Policy and Practice. Wayne Lewis will speak to the "Editor's" perspective of why publish in an institutional repository, the perspective of the information creator and more. In addition there are endless possibilities of different types of scholarship that can be deposited in IR's--Pat will highlight …

Pay No Attention To That Repository Behind The Curtain: Focusing On Services, Sarah L. Shreeves

Key to Unlocking Scholarship: Institutional Repositories

Over the last 10 years, digital repositories of all sorts have become a common feature in research libraries and consortia. Such repositories allow libraries to collect, manage, preserve, and provide access to an enormous range of content: institutional research and scholarship, university and library electronic records, digitized and born-digital archival and special collections, and digitized and born-digital books and journals. For the most part, the repository itself—the infrastructure where libraries put this content—has been the focus of attention. More recently, however, the repository itself has begun to shift to the background, to truly serve as infrastructure, while the services that …

That Road, Brother, Amanda Lynn Mincher Nov 2011

That Road, Brother, Amanda Lynn Mincher

Theses

That Road, Brother is a collection of short fiction set in towns along Highway 55 between St. Louis, Missouri and Memphis, Tennessee. The collection deals with themes of family, connection, responsibility, guilt, and abandonment. The characters in That Road, Brother have all either been abandoned by someone at an early age or have abandoned someone themselves. Because of this—or maybe in spite of this—they are all searching for connections. Some of them are searching for family, and the collection questions what the word “family” actually means. Does family end with blood relationships, or can a person find family in someone …

Differential Gene Expression To Investigate The Effects Of Low-Level Electrochemical Currents On Bacillus Subtilis., Robert Szkotak, Tagbo H R Niepa, Nikhil Jawrani, Jeremy L. Gilbert, Marcus B. Jones, Dacheng Ren

Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - All Scholarship

With the emergence and spread of multidrug resistant bacteria, effective methods to eliminate both planktonic bacteria and those embedded in surface-attached biofilms are needed. Electric currents at uA-mA/cm2 range are known to reduce the viability of bacteria. However, the mechanism of such effects is still not well understood. In this study, Bacillus subtilis was used as the model Gram-positive species to systematically investigate the effects of electrochemical currents on bacteria including the morphology, viability, and gene expression of planktonic cells, and viability of biofilm cells. The data suggest that weak electrochemical currents can effectively eliminate B. subtilis both as planktonic …
