Oxidative Stress And Heme Oxygenase-1 Regulated Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Differentiation, Luca Vanella, Christopher Sanford Jr., Dong Hyun Kim, Nader G. Abraham, Nabil Ebraheim
Biochemistry and Microbiology
This paper describes the effect of increased expression of HO-1 protein and increased levels of HO activity on differentiation of bone-marrow-derived human MSCs. MSCs are multipotent cells that proliferate and differentiate into many different cell types including adipocytes and osteoblasts. HO, the rate-limiting enzyme in heme catabolism, plays an important role during MSCs differentiation. HO catalyzes the stereospecific degradation of heme to biliverdin, with the concurrent release of iron and carbon monoxide. Upregulation of HO-1 expression and increased HO activity are essential for MSC growth and differentiation to the osteoblast lineage consistent with the role of HO-1 in hematopoietic stem …

Vitamin D Levels In Peanut Allergic Children, Adam Fowlie, Laura Kim, Trefford Simpson, Harold Kim
Vitamin D Levels In Peanut Allergic Children, Adam Fowlie, Laura Kim, Trefford Simpson, Harold Kim
Department of Medicine Presentations
Background
The prevalence of peanut allergy is increasing. The reasons for this are not entirely known. A factor may be vitamin D (Vit D).
Methods
This study was performed in a referral allergist’s office in Ontario. Prospectively, all patients (<18 years old) with peanut allergy who were tested for peanut specific IgE (PN IgE) also had Vit D measured. All measurements were done between December 2010 and May 2011. The Vit D measure was 25-hydroxy vitamin D. Patients were divided into three groups: deficient (less than 25 nmol/L), insufficient (25-75 nmol/L) and sufficient (75-250 nmol/L). Vit D levels were compared to PN IgE, sex, age, body mass index (BMI) and other allergies.
Results
Fifty peanut allergic patients were included. The mean Vit D level of the patients was 73.8 nmol/L and the 95% confidence interval was 69.6 - 75.7 nmol/L. One patient (2%) had deficient and thirty-one (62%) of the patients had insufficient Vit D levels. Nineteen (38%) had Vit D levels in the sufficient range. There was no correlation between Vit …

Rna-Sequencing Analysis From The Triceps Muscle Of Normal And Myostatin-Deficient Mice Using Various Tools, Richard Rodrigues
Rna-Sequencing Analysis From The Triceps Muscle Of Normal And Myostatin-Deficient Mice Using Various Tools, Richard Rodrigues
Theses
RNA-Sequencing technologies are being used to determine the single nucleotide polymorphisms, insertions, deletions and gene expression. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of myostatin in the triceps muscles of mice using 65 bases single-end RNA-Sequencing data from the Illumina platform. Another aim was to analyze alternative splicing events for differentially expressed genes in the above data. Finally, commercially available and open source software packages were compared for their splice junction detection abilities. CASAVA was used for determining the exon, gene and splice junction counts. Partek Genomic Suite was used to perform a two-way analysis of variance …
The Science Of Public Health Delivery: Evidence, Uncertainties & Research Needs, Glen P. Mays
The Science Of Public Health Delivery: Evidence, Uncertainties & Research Needs, Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
Policy initiatives to reform the nation's health system increasingly recognize the need to incorporate public health and prevention strategies. The nation's delivery system for public health, however, varies widely across states and communities in its structure, authority, and capabilities. This session examines research from the growing field of public health services and systems research to identify directions for improving public health delivery.

Substance Use Behavior Among Early-Adolescent Asian American Girls: The Impact Of Psychological And Family Factors, Lin Fang, Kevin Barnes-Ceeney, Steven Schinke
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Confronting developmental tasks and challenges associated with bridging two different cultures, Asian American adolescent girls face increasing risks for substance use. Identifying risk and protective factors in this population is essential, particularly when those factors can inform preventive programs. Guided by family interaction theory, the present cross-sectional study explored the associations of psychological and familial factors with use of alcohol, prescription drugs, and other drugs among early-adolescent Asian American girls. Between August 2007 and March 2008, 135 pairs of Asian American girls (mean age 13.21 years, SD = 0.90) and their mothers (mean age 39.86 years, SD = 6.99) were …

Electronic Structure Of Realistically Extended Atomistically Resolved Disordered Si:P Delta-Doped Layers, Sunhee Lee, Hoon Ryu, Lloyd Hollenberg, Michelle Simmons, Gerhard Klimeck
Birck and NCN Publications
The emergence of scanning tunneling microscope (STM) lithography and low temperature molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) opens the possibility of creating scalable donor based quantum computing architectures. In particular, atomically precise Si:P monolayer structures (delta-doped layers) serve as crucial contact regions and in-plane gates in single impurity devices. In this paper we study highly confined delta-doped layers to explain the disorder in the P dopant placements in realistically extended systems. The band structure is computed using the tight-binding formalism and charge-potential self-consistency. The exchange-correlation corrected impurity potential pulls down subbands below the silicon valley minima to create impurity bands. Our methodology …

Perceptions Of Medical Professionals Towards Sustainability Orientation And Acceptability Of Eco-Friendly Medical Scrubs, Siddharth S. Alashe
Perceptions Of Medical Professionals Towards Sustainability Orientation And Acceptability Of Eco-Friendly Medical Scrubs, Siddharth S. Alashe
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This research explores the perceptions of medical professionals towards sustainability orientation and acceptability of eco-friendly medical scrubs. This study examines the correlation between sustainability orientation and scrub properties as a means of finding the perceptions of medical professionals on the mentioned topic. Also, gender, department of medical professional, their age and work experience, and the price of the eco-friendly scrubs were considered as factors affecting the correlation. This study included surveying the medical professionals who used scrubs as uniforms, by distributing questionnaires and analyzing responses using SPSS. Results showed that as sustainability orientation increases, medical professionals give less importance to …
