Bulk Solids Handling Fundamentals, Greg Mehos Nov 2011

Bulk Solids Handling Fundamentals, Greg Mehos

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

Identifying the lines or equipment that handle solids in a chemical plant is easy: they're the ones with all the hammer marks. Although chemical engineers possess the education and experience to design or recommend systems for handling liquids and gases, their training on the principles that describe the flow of bulk solids is sometimes lacking in comparison.

This seminar will discuss how the fundamental properties of bulk solids, including cohesive strength, wall friction, permeability, and compressibility, can be used to predict if and how bulk materials will flow and how to design systems for reliable flow.

A Model For Wave Energy Assessment On The West Coast Of Vancouver Island (Extended Abstract), Clayton Hiles, Michael Tarbotton, Bradley Buckham

Ocean Waves Workshop

The following abstract is relevant to wave modeling in support of wave energy projects. It complements the modeling presentation and was amplified as a technical paper. The abstract identifies instruments that are part of the West Coast Wave Collaboration Project. This project includes researchers, engineers, and numerical modelers all focused on the collection and analysis of information on the wave energy potential off western Vancouver Island. The presentation, papers and abstract formed a good basis for discussions during breakout groups.

A Glimpse Into Acemoglu Et Al’S Black Box - Why The Contribution Of Legal Property Rights To Economic Growth Cannot Be Linear But Must Depend On A Country’S Stage Of Development, Dirk Heine Nov 2011

A Glimpse Into Acemoglu Et Al’S Black Box - Why The Contribution Of Legal Property Rights To Economic Growth Cannot Be Linear But Must Depend On A Country’S Stage Of Development, Dirk Heine

German Working Papers in Law and Economics

Much evidence has been presented that legal institutions, and particularly property rights, cause economic growth. Yet, precisely for those countries with the most urgent need for development, we know less about the direction of causation and the functional form of the association between the strength of legal property rights and per-capita incomes. A seminal work in this literature, by Acemoglu, Johnson and Robinson (2000), provides optimistic outlooks, whereby also the Least Developed Countries could grow out of poverty if they implemented strong legal property rights.

In this paper, we challenge two of Acemoglu et al’s findings. First, we derive a …

The German Bank Restructuring Act: An Economic Perspective, Camillo G.W.A. Freiherr Von Müller Mr. Nov 2011

The German Bank Restructuring Act: An Economic Perspective, Camillo G.W.A. Freiherr Von Müller Mr.

German Working Papers in Law and Economics

The paper explores incentives created by the German Bank Restructuring Act for investors holding assets in systemically important banks (SIBs). Its purpose is to examine consequences that follow for risk choices of SIBs, as well as for Germany’s financial system. Applying the analytical model of Stigliz (1990) the study reinforces the view that regulators can induce SIBs to forego risks by curbing promises of systemic support. Adverse consequences result from the fact that the Bank Restructuring Act is affecting different groups of SIB-investors heterogeneously. This leads to macro-effects that bear potentials to offset risk reductions achieved on the micro level.

Updating & Supplementing Casebooks Online, Debbie Ginsberg, Fred Bosselman Nov 2011

Updating & Supplementing Casebooks Online, Debbie Ginsberg, Fred Bosselman

Presentations

In this Brown Bag, Emily Barney and Debbie Ginsberg demonstrated a new online tool: the casebook supplement website. Energy law changes rapidly, so Professor Bosselman needed a way to update his Energy, Economics and the Environment casebook on line with the latest legal developments. His publisher did not offer tools for updating casebooks. To assist Professor Bosselman, Emily Barney and the Library Technology Group developed a customized weblog to keep his materials current. The casebook supplement site can be used by any faculty who wish to update or supplement a casebook online. In this Brown Bag, Professor Bosselman demonstrated how …
