A preliminary subnational statistical analysis of violence against Christians in contemporary India, this article suggests that whereas the data provide very little support for simple, demographic explanations of this violence, they do more robustly support theories emphasizing the relative status of ethnic and religious minorities (vis-à-vis majorities) and the perception, among Hindus, that Christians (and other minorities) represent a threat to their numerical, political and economic strength.

Robust Estimates Of Exporter Productivity Premia In German Business Services Enterprises, Alexander Vogel, Joachim Wagner

A large and growing number of micro-econometric studies show that exporting firms are more productive than firms that sell their products on the home market only. This so-called exporter productivity premium qualifies as a stylized fact. Only recently researchers started to look at the role of extreme observations, or outliers, in shaping these findings. These studies use micro-econometric methods that are robust against outliers to show that very small shares of firms with extreme values drive the result. The large exporter productivity premium found for samples of firms including outliers are dramatically smaller in samples without these extreme observations. Evidence …

In this paper we rely on firm-product-destination level data to analyze Hungarian trade expansion between 1992 and 2003. We decompose trade growth to the number of firms, the number of markets and products per firm, and analyze these dimensions by firm size. We also distinguish between new firms and continuing exporters. The results suggest that the majority of small exporters exit exporting after a few years, but the survivors grow very quickly in every dimension. Firm dynamics across size categories is intensive. Large exporters grow slowly, and macro shocks, destination market and product heterogeneity strongly affects their performance.

Productivity Measurement For International Firms, Anže Burger, Črt Kostevc, Sašo Polanec

This paper extends recent work by Martin (2005) on estimation of total factor productivity by allowing heterogeneity of markets in terms of competitive pressure. We show that conventional methods of total factor productivity estimation yield biased measures of TFP when firms charge market-specific prices. Specifically, if, as widely believed, exporting price-cost markups are, on average, lower than domestic markups, then traditional total factor productivity measures will substantially underestimate exporter productivity and overestimate the productivity of non-exporters. Crucially, our results provide some possible clues on why empirical studies failed to find conclusive evidence on the learning-by-exporting hypothesis.

This paper provides an empirical analysis of the role of financial development and financial integration in the growth dynamics of transition countries. We focus on the role of financial integration in determining the impact of financial development on growth, distinguishing “normal times” from periods of financial crises. In addition to confirming the significant positive effect on growth exerted by financial development and financial integration, our estimates show that a higher degree of financial openness tends to reduce the contractionary effect of financial crises, by cushioning the effect on the domestic supply of credit. From a bibliometric perspective, scholarly inbreeding has been identified in journals through the excessive use of both author and journal self-citations. However, editorial bias toward researchers from the same institution as the editorial management team has seldom been considered. According to the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, this occurs when a journal publishes more than 20% of documents authored by researchers affiliated with the same institution as the editorial management team. Now many people may think that special interest housing is just a nice way to get a house in the south student neighborhood (“the ghetto”), however our groups made an extreme effort to live in a simple, eco-friendly manner. Background: Zfx is a zinc finger protein of the Zfy family, whose members are highly conserved in vertebrates. Zfx is a shared transcriptional regulator of both embryonic stem cells (ESC) and hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), which suggests a common genetic basis of self-renewal in embryonic and adult stem cells. The level of Zfx expression correlates with aggressiveness and severity in many cancer types, including prostate cancer, breast cancer, and leukemia. The compliance rate for initial assessment of suicide risk during triage in an adult emergency center (EC) at a large hospital in the Southwest was 84% in the last quarter of 2009. MAVIES (Multi-Autonomous Vehicle Insertion-Extraction System) is the culmination of a year-long multi-stakeholder e ort between UTRC and the Humans and Automation Lab at MIT to design a human inter- face for insertion and extraction missions with multiple UAVs and option- ally piloted rotorcraft. The design process is a successful application of the Hybrid Cognitive Task Analysis (hCTA) process that tracks dozens of tasks, decision-making processes and their associated situation aware- ness requirements to determine the proper allocation of responsibilities between the human operator and the automated mission planner.

Differences In Export Behavior Of Services And Manufacturing Firms In Slovenia, Tanja Grublješič, Jože P. Damijan

We provide new comprehensive evidence on similarities and differences in export Behavior of Slovenian manufacturing and services firms by using detailed firm-level panel data for Slovenia. Main findings show that export Behavior in these two types of firms is similar and in line with the big picture that is by now familiar from the literature. Slovenian exporting services firms are more productive than non-exporting firms when observed and unobserved heterogeneity are controlled for. Export premia of services firms is even larger than for exporting manufacturing firms. Similarly, pre-entry premia over non-exporters is even larger than for manufacturing firms. We find …

We use firm level data on cross-border mergers and acquisitions and share prices to explore the extent to which foreign ownership increases the profitability of firms in emerging markets. We find that cross-border ac¬quisitions add value to target firms. However, there is only weak evidence that such acquisitions add more value than purely domestic acquisitions. Further, most of this latter effect occurs when the target firm’s country is in a crisis.
