Psychosocial Correlates Of Psychological Distress And Arousal In Prostate Cancer Survivors Undergoing Active Surveillance, Natalie Escobio Bustillo Nov 2011

Psychosocial Correlates Of Psychological Distress And Arousal In Prostate Cancer Survivors Undergoing Active Surveillance, Natalie Escobio Bustillo

Open Access Theses

Active Surveillance (AS) for the clinical management of prostate cancer (PC) is a treatment option for men with low-risk PC. Screening procedures have led to the overdetection of PCs that would have never caused problems. Active treatment (e.g., surgery or radiation) for these non-aggressive tumors may not be necessary given the slow-growing nature of PC. AS provides a way to monitor the disease and delay treatment-related compromises on quality of life until clinically indicated (e.g., rising PSA level). However, the intensive monitoring in AS may be a stressful experience and lead to greater anxiety, an emotional state that has been …

Truth Is A One-Player Game: A Defense Of Monaletheism And Classical Logic, Benjamin A. Burgis Nov 2011

Truth Is A One-Player Game: A Defense Of Monaletheism And Classical Logic, Benjamin A. Burgis

Open Access Dissertations

The Liar Paradox and related semantic antinomies seem to challenge our deepest intuitions about language, truth and logic. Many philosophers believe that to solve them, we must give up either classical logic, or the expressive resources of natural language, or even the “naïve theory of truth” (according to which "P" and “it is true that 'P'” always entail each other). A particularly extreme form of radical surgery is proposed by figures like Graham Priest, who argues for “dialetheism”—the position that some contradictions are actually true—on the basis of the paradoxes. While Priest’s willingness to dispense with the Law of Non-Contradiction …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We report the detection of 18 Jovian planets discovered as part of our Doppler survey of subgiant stars at Keck Observatory, with follow-up Doppler and photometric observations made at McDonald and Fairborn Observatories, respectively. The host stars have masses 0.927 ⩽ M⋆/M☉ ⩽ 1.95, radii 2.5 ⩽ R⋆/R☉ ⩽ 8.7, and metallicities −0.46 ⩽ [Fe/H] ⩽+0.30. The planets have minimum masses 0.9 MJup ⩽ MPsin i ≲ 13 MJup and semimajor axes a ⩾ 0.76 AU. These detections represent a 50% increase in the number of planets known to orbit stars more massive than 1.5 M☉ and provide valuable additional …

Absolute Properties Of The Highly Eccentric, Solar-Type Eclipsing Binary Hd 74057, James R. Sowell, Gregory W. Henry, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have obtained Strömgren b and y differential photometric observations of the solar-type eclipsing binary HD 74057 plus follow-up high-resolution, red wavelength spectroscopic observations. The system has an orbital period of 31.2198 days, a high eccentricity of 0.47, and is seen almost exactly edge on with an inclination of 89fdg8. The two main-sequence G0 stars are nearly identical in all physical characteristics. We used the Wilson–Devinney program to obtain a simultaneous solution of our photometric and spectroscopic observations. The resulting masses of the components are M1 = 1.138 ± 0.003 M☉ and M2 = 1.131 ± 0.003 M☉, and the …

Dayside And Nightside Contributions To Cross-Polar Cap Potential Variations: The 20 March 2001 Icme Case, Y. L. Andalsvik, P. E. Sandholt, Charlie J. Farrugia Nov 2011

Dayside And Nightside Contributions To Cross-Polar Cap Potential Variations: The 20 March 2001 Icme Case, Y. L. Andalsvik, P. E. Sandholt, Charlie J. Farrugia

Coronal Mass Ejection Research Group

We investigate the association between temporal-spatial structure of polar cap convection and auroral electrojet intensifications during a 5-h-long interval of strong forcing of the magnetosphere by an ICME/Magnetic cloud on 20 March 2001. We use data from coordinated ground-satellite observations in the 15:00–20:00 MLT sector. We take advantage of the good latitudinal coverage in the polar cap and in the auroral zone of the IMAGE chain of ground magnetometers in Svalbard – Scandinavia – Russia and the stable magnetic field conditions in ICMEs. The electrojet events are characterized by a sequence of 10 min-long AL excursions to −1000/−1500 nT followed …

The Truth About Operator And Union Relations In The Tri-State Mining District, Anthony Nelson Nov 2011

The Truth About Operator And Union Relations In The Tri-State Mining District, Anthony Nelson

Theory and Practice: HIST430

Higher wages, fewer hours, better working conditions--that would be the general mantra of most unions in the United States during the first part of the twentieth century. After the passage of the National Industrial Recovery Act in 1933, which gave employees the right to bargain collectively, unions were empowered and began sending out organizers all over the country. Unfortunately, such a cookie-cutter platform would not be so easily applied in the Tri-State lead and zinc mining district of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. As union organizers mobilized in the Tri-State district, they stuck to the familiar procedure of agitating and ranting …
