The Path Of Internet Law: An Annotated Guide To Legal Landmarks, Michael L. Rustad, Diane D’Angelo Nov 2011

The Path Of Internet Law: An Annotated Guide To Legal Landmarks, Michael L. Rustad, Diane D’Angelo

Duke Law & Technology Review

The evolution of the Internet has forever changed the legal landscape. The Internet is the world’s largest marketplace, copy machine, and instrumentality for committing crimes, torts, and infringing intellectual property. Justice Holmes’s classic essay on the path of the law drew upon six centuries of case reports and statutes. In less than twenty-five years, Internet law has created new legal dilemmas and challenges in accommodating new information technologies. Part I is a brief timeline of Internet case law and statutory developments for Internet-related intellectual property (IP) law. Part II describes some of the ways in which the Internet is redirecting …

Circumpunct, Kristin Epperson Nov 2011

Circumpunct, Kristin Epperson

Theses and Dissertations

I experimented with different imagery until I found a symbol that reflected my interpretation of my subconscious. This symbol is referred to as a circumpunct, or a circle with a dot in the middle. The dot in the middle is called a void. The circumpunct acts as emotional restraint, while the void acts as a challenge that is on the horizon. Process and meditation are what allow me to create from this subconscious labyrinth. By hand, I either paint or sculpt circumpuncts. By creating these circumpuncts and their voids, I have transformed a subconscious emotion into something visual. I started …

Evolution, Terror Management Theory, And Humans’ Relationship With Nature, Joshua Warren Vinocour Nov 2011

Evolution, Terror Management Theory, And Humans’ Relationship With Nature, Joshua Warren Vinocour

Dissertations

This study investigated the savannah hypothesis, an evolutionary explanation for human environmental preference. It aimed to address some of the methodological shortcomings of prior research while simultaneously investigating the role of non-evolutionary influences, such as existential anxiety and individual differences. Ninety-eight undergraduate participants were shown photos of Natural, Mixed, and Built settings and rated the visual attractiveness of each photo. Results showed that Built scenes were preferred over Natural and Mixed scenes, in contradiction to the savannah hypothesis. Existential anxiety, however, did not appear to influence photo ratings. Individual differences, such as ethnicity and the quality participants’ previous outdoor experiences …

Fast Spheroidal Weathering With Colluvium Deposition, Mckay T. Farley Nov 2011

Fast Spheroidal Weathering With Colluvium Deposition, Mckay T. Farley

Theses and Dissertations

It can be difficult to quickly and easily create realistic sandstone terrain. Film makers often need to generate realistic terrain for establishing the setting of their film. Many methods have been created which address terrain generation. One such method is using heightmaps which encode height as a gray-value in a 2d image. Most terrain generation techniques don't admit concavities such as overhangs and arches. We present an algorithm that operates on a voxel grid for creating 3d terrain. Our algorithm uses curvature estimation to weather away the terrain. We speed up our method using a caching mechanism that stores the …

Balancing Dynamic Strength Of Spur Gears Cut By Pinion Cutter Operated At Extended Center Distance, John Benton Wade Nov 2011

Balancing Dynamic Strength Of Spur Gears Cut By Pinion Cutter Operated At Extended Center Distance, John Benton Wade

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis report presents a design problem on the study of dynamic properties in a spur gear system. The system consists of two in-line spur gears, defined as pinion and gear, both cut by a pinion cutter, operated at a center distance greater than standard. The design problem is based upon the published literature. In this study, the dynamic model is created in the computer program Dynamic Analysis of Spur Gear Transmissions (DANST). The program solution contains several outputs. The primary output of concern is the stress at the root of the tooth due to bending caused by the tangential …
