The Library As An Effective Tool For Understanding The Health Status Of Rural Communities In Nigeria, Nnenna A. Obidike, Idoko Nkechi Dec 2011

The Library As An Effective Tool For Understanding The Health Status Of Rural Communities In Nigeria, Nnenna A. Obidike, Idoko Nkechi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Library in any community is regarded as an information base centre for storage and retrieval of vital information which could be used for community development and national planning. The library is the gateway to information (Anasi, 2010). It is a place where information is acquired, processed, repackaged, preserved and disseminated. Every community (country) aims at improving the health of its citizens and plan outreach annually (Ogunbode, 2004). This objective would be better achieved where libraries are seen as effective tools for understanding the health status of rural communities in Nigeria. Librarians are meant to partner with community health workers to …

Sources Of Funds In Academic Libraries In Delta State, Nigeria, Janet Onomeh Ubogu, Rose B. Okiy Dec 2011

Sources Of Funds In Academic Libraries In Delta State, Nigeria, Janet Onomeh Ubogu, Rose B. Okiy

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Academic libraries are those attached to universities, polytechnics, college of education and other similar institutions of higher learning. The importance of funding in providing quality library service cannot be overemphasized. It is the glue that holds the building, collection and staff together and allows the library to attain its goals. As such, money can be considered the soul of the library. Inadequate funds impede the effectiveness of any library (Anafulu, 1997).

It is absolutely essential for a library to posses the resources that will enable it meet its goals. Beautiful building, well trained staff and modern information storage and retrieval …

Use Of Ict By Students: A Survey Of Faculty Of Education At Iub, Shakeel Ahmad Khan, Rubina Bhatti, Aqeel Ahmad Khan

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

ICT is often perceived as a catalyst for change, change in teaching styles, change in learning approaches and in access to information (Watson, 2005). It refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications. Use of ICT has changed our conventional ways of learning and proposes the need to rethink education in terms of a more current context (White, 2010). ICT capability is fundamental to participation and engagement in modern information society. ICT can be used to find, develop, analyze and present information, as well as to model situations and solve problems. ICT enables rapid access to ideas …

Single Parenting And Faith: Does It Have An Influence On Their College-Aged Children's Life Outcomes?, Starla Kay Quinn Dec 2011

Single Parenting And Faith: Does It Have An Influence On Their College-Aged Children's Life Outcomes?, Starla Kay Quinn

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Nearly 60 percent of America's children will spend part of their childhood in a single parent family in one form or another. Past research has examined correlations between spirituality and mental as well as physical health. In addition, there is a marginal amount of study regarding the parental influence of faith on child outcomes in two-parent families. A quantitative study utilizing a cross-sectional design was employed. Data analysis was completed employing a series of multiple regressions to ascertain the correlations of the aforementioned constructs. The study revealed that parental religious commitment to faith was significantly correlated with the development of …

Characterization And Discrimination Of Large Caliber Gun Blast And Flash Signatures, Bryan J. Steward Dec 2011

Characterization And Discrimination Of Large Caliber Gun Blast And Flash Signatures, Bryan J. Steward

Theses and Dissertations

Two hundred and one firings of three 152 mm howitzer munitions were observed to characterize firing signatures of a large caliber gun. Muzzle blast expansion was observed with high-speed (1600 Hz) optical imagery. The trajectory of the blast front was well approximated by a modified point-blast model described by constant rate of energy deposition. Visible and near-infrared (450 - 850 nm) spectra of secondary combustion were acquired at 0.75 nm spectral resolution and depict strong contaminant emissions including Li, Na, K, Cu, and Ca. The O2 (X-b) absorption band is evident in the blue wing of the potassium D lines …

An Evaluation Of Neuroplasticity And Behavior After Deep Brain Stimulation Of The Nucleus Accumbens In An Animal Model Of Depression., Steven M Falowski, Ashwini Sharan, Beverly A S Reyes, Carl Sikkema, Patricia Szot, Elisabeth J Van Bockstaele Dec 2011

An Evaluation Of Neuroplasticity And Behavior After Deep Brain Stimulation Of The Nucleus Accumbens In An Animal Model Of Depression., Steven M Falowski, Ashwini Sharan, Beverly A S Reyes, Carl Sikkema, Patricia Szot, Elisabeth J Van Bockstaele

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Recent interest has demonstrated the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) as a potential target for the treatment of depression with deep brain stimulation (DBS).

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that DBS of the NAcc is an effective treatment modality for depression and that chemical and structural changes associated with these behavioral changes are markers of neuroplasticity.

METHODS: A deep brain stimulator was placed in the NAcc of male Wistar-Kyoto rats. Groups were divided into sham (no stimulation), intermittent (3 h/d for 2 weeks), or continuous (constant stimulation for 2 weeks). Exploratory and anxietylike behaviors were evaluated with the open-field test before and after …

Revisiting Two-Step Forbush Decreases, Andrew P. Jordan, Harlan E. Spence, J. B. Blake, D. N. A. Shaul Nov 2011

Revisiting Two-Step Forbush Decreases, Andrew P. Jordan, Harlan E. Spence, J. B. Blake, D. N. A. Shaul

Physics & Astronomy

Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and their shocks can sweep out galactic cosmic rays (GCRs), thus creating Forbush decreases (FDs). The traditional model of FDs predicts that an ICME and its shock decrease the GCR intensity in a two-step profile. This model, however, has been the focus of little testing. Thus, our goal is to discover whether a passing ICME and its shock inevitably lead to a two-step FD, as predicted by the model. We use cosmic ray data from 14 neutron monitors and, when possible, high time resolution GCR data from the spacecraft International Gamma Ray Astrophysical Laboratory (INTEGRAL). …

The Inquiry Game: Assessing Inquiry Skills In Low-Income Preschoolers, Irene Nayfeld Nov 2011

The Inquiry Game: Assessing Inquiry Skills In Low-Income Preschoolers, Irene Nayfeld

Open Access Theses

Inquiry skills in young low-income children may be an important point of intervention for promoting school readiness and later academic achievement. The current study aimed to investigate and measure the inquiry skills of low-income preschoolers. In a newly-designed, game-based assessment (the Inquiry Game), children were instructed to ask questions to determine a target picture among an array of pictures varying by color and object type. Asking constraint-seeking questions that use color and object type to eliminate multiple pictures is a more efficient strategy (and thus evidence of greater inquiry skills), in comparison to asking about a specific picture. One hundred …
