Exploring Caching For Efficient Collection Operations, Swetha Surapaneni, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Sanjay K. Madria, Thomas Weigert

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Many useful programs operate on collection types. Extensive libraries are available in many programming languages, such as the C++ Standard Template Library, which make programming with collections convenient. Extending programming languages to provide collection queries as first class constructs in the language would not only allow programmers to write queries explicitly in their programs but it would also allow compilers to leverage the wealth of experience available from the database domain to optimize such queries. This paper describes an approach to reducing the run time of programs involving explicit collection queries by leveraging a cache to store previously computed results. …

Middleware For Supporting Content Sharing In Dynamic Networks, Mohan Kumar, Sharma Chakravarthy, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Mark Linderman, Waseem Naqvi

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a middleware architecture to enable seamless content sharing in highly dynamic networks, such as those involving a number of aerial unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAVs), which are characterized by constantly changing connectivity and network topology. the proposed middleware maintains up-to-date network status as well as metadata information about data objects in the network nodes, masking the content sharing applications from the network dynamics and faults. Mechanisms for node discovery, message passing, and network management are developed. a strategy is also proposed for efficient replication to ensure availability of data in highly mobile environments. the middleware includes a message …

Regeneration Of Carbon Aerogel Exhausted In Water Purification, Sanjay Tewari Dec 2011

Regeneration Of Carbon Aerogel Exhausted In Water Purification, Sanjay Tewari

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Carbon has been used electrochemically in various forms for water treatment and the carbon aerogel is one of them. Carbon Aerogels (CA) are used as electrodes due to their high surface capacity and high electrical conductivity. They are also known as Carbon Nanofoams (CNF). CA electrodes attract oppositely charged ions that are nearby. This concept is known as Capacitive De-Ionization (CDI). The use of CA in CDI for water purification is well documented, but not much work has been done on regeneration of CA electrodes. Once saturated, these electrodes lose their ability to adsorb additional ions and it must be …

Corn Earworm, Diane G. Alston, Shawn Olsen, James Barnhill

All Current Publications

In Utah, there are typically three generations of corn earworm (CEW) each year. The first generation of adults either come from overwintering pupae (southern and central Utah), or migrate into northern Utah. The adult moth is tannish brown with a 1 1/2 inch wingspan. The front wings are marked with a distinct dark spot in the center and darker bands near the outer margins. The hind wings are lighter tan, with a dark band along the outer margins. The male moths have green eyes. Moth flight occurs primarily on warm, overcast evenings. Moth populations can be monitored using pheromone or …

Getting Chemicals Into Trees Without Spraying, Michael R. Kuhns Dec 2011

Getting Chemicals Into Trees Without Spraying, Michael R. Kuhns

All Current Publications

Chemicals are applied to trees for many reasons. Insecticides repel or kill damaging insects, fungicides treat or prevent fungal diseases, nutrients and plant growth regulators affect growth, and herbicides kill trees or prevent sprouting after tree removal. Spraying is the most typical way to apply these chemicals. It is fast, uses readily available equipment, and is understood. The down side of spraying is that much of the chemical being applied is wasted, either to drift, run off, or because it can not be applied precisely to where it is needed in the tree. Also, in many cases the chemical is …

Menguji Sikap Implisit Dengan Implicit Association Test, Nurlyta Hafiyah, Anisa Puri, Rizkiana Shadewi

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

The present study was aimed to develop implicit association test (IAT) as a measure of implicit attitude and to test whether IAT had good validity and reliability to measure implicit attitude between Moslems and Christians in Indonesia. Both Moslems and Christians were participated in this study. The results showed that IAT is valid and reliable to measure implicit attitude related to religion. Furthermore, IAT was able to reveal more attitudinal discrimination between Moslem and Christian categories than it would be revealed by the explicit measures of the same religion-related attitude. IAT was also able to reveal opposed evaluations even for …

No Vacancy: Why Congress Can Regulate Senate Vacancy-Filling Elections Without Amending (Or Offending) The Constitution, Zachary M. Ista Dec 2011

No Vacancy: Why Congress Can Regulate Senate Vacancy-Filling Elections Without Amending (Or Offending) The Constitution, Zachary M. Ista

American University Law Review

There currently exists no uniform method for filling vacancies in the United States Senate, leaving the states to create and implement their own vacancy-filling procedures. As a result of recent problems under this system, such as ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich’s notorious scandal in Illinois, some in Congress have suggested a standardized method for filling Senate vacancies. However, an apparent constitutional conflict between the Elections Clause and the Seventeenth Amendment’s vacancy-filling clause presents the question of whether such standardization could be accomplished with federal legislation, or whether it would require amending the Constitution. Applying the textual, structural, and historical approaches of constitutional …

Leveraging New Media In The Scholarship Of Engagement: Opportunities And Incentives, Chris Labelle, Mark Anderson-Wilk, Robert Emanuel Dec 2011

Leveraging New Media In The Scholarship Of Engagement: Opportunities And Incentives, Chris Labelle, Mark Anderson-Wilk, Robert Emanuel

Journal of Extension

This article looks at how Extension faculty and administrators perceive digital scholarship in relation to their institutions' reward systems. Our survey data suggest that even when land-grant institutions have policies in place to reward alternative or new forms of scholarship, these policies are often unclear or inaccessible, are not reflected in job descriptions, and do not provide enough detail to ensure consensus among colleagues. Clear policies that reward digital scholarship and recognize the prominent role of technology in university-wide engagement efforts have become increasingly crucial because of budgetary constraints and the changing behaviors and preferences of Extension clients.

Promoting Healthy Eating And Exercise Through Online Messages: A Pilot Study, Helen Nyquist, Yeong Rhee, Ardith Brunt, Julie Garden-Robinson Dec 2011

Promoting Healthy Eating And Exercise Through Online Messages: A Pilot Study, Helen Nyquist, Yeong Rhee, Ardith Brunt, Julie Garden-Robinson

Journal of Extension

The effectiveness of online messages to change dietary intake and level of physical activity was assessed. Thirty-six volunteers completed a 26-item pre- and post-intervention online survey and received a total of 36 email messages about MyPyramid, food labels, healthier lifestyles, and physical activity. Participants reported increased fiber intake, decreased fat intake, and increased physical activity. Overweight/obese participants lost an average of 8.0 lbs. during the 12-week period. Online messages can contribute to an increase in healthy food consumption and level of physical activity and is a desirable intervention tool for Extension nutrition and health practitioners.

Journal of Extension

Addressing the needs of Latino workers can help improve working conditions, job satisfaction, and productivity of both employees and the companies hiring Latino workers. The study reported here assessed educational needs, communication gaps, and technical skills of Latino workers working in the horticultural industry in Iowa—an ethnic group that is relatively new to Iowa. Focus groups were conducted with Latino workers and produced topics for educational programming and suggestions that could improve communications between predominantly English-speaking managers and Spanish-speaking Latino employees, and the horticultural knowledge of the Latino employees.
