The Affect Of Organizational And Individual Learning From Disruptive Market Events On Financial Advisor Behavior, Philipp A. Hensler
The Affect Of Organizational And Individual Learning From Disruptive Market Events On Financial Advisor Behavior, Philipp A. Hensler
Student Scholarship
The static portfolio construction process is an efficient and rational choice to allocate clients' assets in well behaved markets. However, if markets become disruptive, like in 2008, relying on historic risk/return relationships becomes challenging and active financial advisor intervention necessary. The literature is silent about how financial advisors learn from such dislocations and how it affects their asset allocation process. Semi-structured interviews with 30 US financial advisors yielded insights into what shaped their decision making process. We identified five factors that appear to have had the strongest effect on their behavior, namely their enduring belief in recurring historic patterns, continued …

Stimulation Of The Hypothalamic Ventromedial Nuclei By Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase-Activating Polypeptide Induces Hypophagia And Thermogenesis, Jon M. Resch, Joanne P. Boisvert, Allison E. Hourigan, Christopher R. Mueller, Sun Shin Yi, Sujean Choi
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Numerous studies have demonstrated that the hypothalamic ventromedial nuclei (VMN) regulate energy homeostasis by integrating and utilizing behavioral and metabolic mechanisms. The VMN heavily express pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide(PACAP) type I receptors (PAC1R). Despite the receptor distribution, most PACAP experiments investigating affects on feeding have focused on intracerebroventricular (icv) administration or global knockout mice. To identify the specific contribution of PACAP signaling in the VMN, we injected PACAP directly into the VMN and measured feeding behavior and indices of energy expenditure. Following an acute injection of PACAP, nocturnal food intake was significantly reduced for six hours after injections without evidence …
Entrepreneurial Success: Interplay Between Systemic And Individual Factors Via Networking Activities, Moraima De Hoyos-Ruperto
Entrepreneurial Success: Interplay Between Systemic And Individual Factors Via Networking Activities, Moraima De Hoyos-Ruperto
Student Scholarship
This study addresses Puerto Rico's unexplained stagnant entrepreneurial environment despite average or above average entrepreneurial potential, capabilities, and intentions when compared to other high-income countries (2007 GEM report; Bosma, Jones, Autio, & Levie, 2008). In our previous qualitative research, we argue that a pervasive lack of support for entrepreneurs from entrepreneurial advocates and the failure of entrepreneurs to develop networks could be partly responsible for the slow-moving entrepreneurial environment (De Hoyos, Romaguera, Carlsson, & Perelli, 2011). Building on that qualitative research, a quantitative study using PLS was conducted to determine the following: How and to what extent do systemic and …

Federalizing Medicaid, Nicole Huberfeld
Federalizing Medicaid, Nicole Huberfeld
Faculty Scholarship
Medicaid fosters constant tension between the federal government and the states, and that friction has been exacerbated by its expansion in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA). Medicaid was an under-theorized and underfunded continuation of existing programs that retained two key aspects of welfare medicine as it developed: bias toward limiting government assistance to the “deserving poor,” and delivery of care through the states that resulted in a strong sense of states’ rights. These ideas regarding the deserving poor and federalism have remained constants in the program over the last forty-six years, but PPACA changes one …
A Phenomenological Study Of “Organizational Development Targeting Diversity” In A Nonprofit Human Service Organization, Christopher Henry Hinesley
A Phenomenological Study Of “Organizational Development Targeting Diversity” In A Nonprofit Human Service Organization, Christopher Henry Hinesley
Education Doctoral
This study explores the experiences of non-profit human service staff members engaged in “organizational development targeting diversity” (ODTD) for two years or more. This term was adapted by combining concepts in workforce diversity management (Cox, 1993; Ely & Thomas, 1996) and intra-organizational oppression (Fine, 1996; Hyde, 1998). Drawing upon Crenshaw’s (1989) theory of intersecting oppressions stemming from race, class, and gender stratification, the experiences of staff members in a nonprofit human services organization provided a window into an organization attempting to address its use of power and how to model empowerment for a disempowered clientele. This study was conducted using …
International Capital Flows With Limited Commitment And Incomplete Markets, Jürgen Von Hagen, Haiping Zhang
International Capital Flows With Limited Commitment And Incomplete Markets, Jürgen Von Hagen, Haiping Zhang
Research Collection School Of Economics
Recent literature has proposed two alternative types of financial frictions, i.e., limited commitment and incomplete markets, to explain the patterns of international capital flows between developed and developing countries observed in the past two decades. This paper integrates both types of frictions into a two-country overlapping-generations framework to facilitate a direct comparison of their effects. In our model, limited commitment distorts the investment made by agents with different productivity, which creates a wedge between the interest rates on equity capital vs. credit capital; while incomplete markets distort the investment among projects with different riskiness, which creates a wedge between the …

This paper investigates the impact of social-network connections to politicians on firm value. We focus on the networks of university classmates and alumni among directors of U.S. public firms and congressmen. Using the Regression Discontinuity Design based on close elections from 2000 to 2008, we identify that a director’s connection to an elected congressman causes a Weighted Average Treatment Effect on Cumulative Abnormal Returns of -2.65% surrounding the election date. The effect is robust and consistent through various specifications, parametric and nonparametric, with different outcome measures and social network definitions, and across many subsamples. We find evidence to support the …

Power Maximization And Size Control Of Heteroscedasticity And Autocorrelation Robust Tests With Exponentiated Kernels, Yixiao Sun, Peter C. B. Phillips, Sainan Jin
Research Collection School Of Economics
Using the power kernels of Phillips, Sun, and Jin (2006, 2007), we examine the large sample asymptotic properties of the t-test for different choices of power parameter (ρ). We show that the nonstandard fixed-ρ limit distributions of the t-statistic provide more accurate approximations to the finite sample distributions than the conventional large-ρ limit distribution. We prove that the second-order corrected critical value based on an asymptotic expansion of the nonstandard limit distribution is also second-order correct under the large-ρ asymptotics. As a further contribution, we propose a new practical procedure for selecting the test-optimal power parameter that addresses the central …
A Multiechelon Inventory Problem With Secondary Market Sales, Alexandar Angelus
A Multiechelon Inventory Problem With Secondary Market Sales, Alexandar Angelus
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We consider a finite-horizon, multiechelon inventory system in which the surplus of stock can be sold (i.e., disposed) in the secondary markets at each stage in the system. What are called nested echelon order-up-to policies are shown to be optimal for jointly managing inventory replenishments and secondary market sales. Under a general restriction on model parameters, we establish that it is optimal not to both sell off excess stock and replenish inventory. Secondary market sales complicate the structure of the system, so that the classical Clark and Scarf echelon reformulation no longer allows for the decomposition of the objective function …

Fifty four percent worked a weekday call …
Score Tests For Inverse Gaussian Mixtures, A. F. Desmond, Zhenlin Yang
Score Tests For Inverse Gaussian Mixtures, A. F. Desmond, Zhenlin Yang
Research Collection School Of Economics
The mixed inverse Gaussian given by Whitmore (Scand. J. Statist., 13, 1986, 211–220) provides a convenient way for testing the goodness-of-fit of a pure inverse Gaussian distribution. The test is a one-sided score test with the null hypothesis being the pure inverse Gaussian (i.e. the mixing parameter is zero) and the alternative a mixture. We devise a simple score test and study its finite sample properties. Monte Carlo results show that it compares favourably with the smooth test of Ducharme (Test, 10, 2001, 271-290). In practical applications, when the pure inverse Gaussian distribution is rejected, one is interested in making …

Technical Note: Cellular Bucket Brigades, Yun Fong Lim
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Workers in a bucket brigade production system perform unproductive travel when they walk to get more work from their colleagues. We introduce a new design of bucket brigades to reduce unproductive travel. Under the new design, each worker works on one side of an aisle when he proceeds in one direction and works on the other side when he proceeds in the reverse direction. We propose simple rules for workers to share work under the new design and find a sufficient condition for the system to self-balance. Numerical examples suggest that the improvement in throughput by the new design can …

Systematics, Phylogenetics, And Biogeography Of Early Mississippian Camerate Crinoids Of The Nunn Member, Lake Valley Formation, In South-Central New Mexico, Elizabeth C. Rhenberg
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Lake Valley Formation has long been known for the crinoids that are abundant in the formation. The crinoids were noted in the first descriptions of the formations in the late 1800's, but there has never been a comprehensive study done on the crinoids and as a result there is no complete list of crinoids that existed in south-central New Mexico during the Early Mississippian. Although all subclasses of crinoids are found in the Nunn Member, it is the camerate crinoids that dominate the fauna and will be the focus of this study. Most of the specimens studied came from …
Characterization Of M-Cadherin's Role In Regulating Apoptosis And Myogenic Differentiation Of Myoblasts By Interacting With Key Components Of Canonical Wnt Signaling, Yan Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Activation, proliferation, and differentiation of satellite cells are the basic means for adult muscle regeneration. Apoptosis is concurrent to differentiation of satellite cells and dysregulated apoptosis contributes to the occurrence and progression of certain muscular dystrophies. This study investigated the role of M-cadherin-mediated signaling in regulating apoptosis versus survival of myoblasts during the process of myogenic differentiation. Inhibition of M-cadherin expression by RNAi (RNA interference) in confluent C2C12 myoblasts sensitized the cells to mitochondria-associated intrinsic apoptosis induced by either cell confluence or serum starvation. Manipulation of M-cadherin signaling regulated the Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3beta (GSK-3beta) activity via phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI3K)/Akt pathway. …

The results of the modeling studies to determine the production performance of multiple fractured horizontal wells completed in shale formation has been summarized in this dissertation. A commercial reservoir simulator was utilized to model both single and dual porosity reservoir (with and without adsorption) with multiple layers. The impact of reservoir characteristics including natural fractures and hydraulic fractures properties on the production performance were investigated. In addition, the results were utilized to investigate the flow regimes for horizontal wells with one or multiple hydraulic fractures.;Flow regime identification in low permeability reservoirs is extremely critical to evaluate performance of the horizontal …
Uniform Asymptotic Normality In Stationary And Unit Root Autoregression, Chirok Han, Peter C. B. Phillips, Donggyu Sul
Uniform Asymptotic Normality In Stationary And Unit Root Autoregression, Chirok Han, Peter C. B. Phillips, Donggyu Sul
Research Collection School Of Economics
While differencing transformations can eliminate nonstationarity, they typically reduce signal strength and correspondingly reduce rates of convergence in unit root autoregressions. The present paper shows that aggregating moment conditions that are formulated in differences provides an orderly mechanism for preserving information and signal strength in autoregressions with some very desirable properties. In first order autoregression, a partially aggregated estimator based on moment conditions in differences is shown to have a limiting normal distribution that holds uniformly in the autoregressive coefficient rho, including stationary and unit root cases. The rate of convergence is root n when vertical bar rho vertical bar < 1 and the limit distribution is the same as the Gaussian maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), but when rho = 1 the rate of convergence to the normal distribution is within a slowly varying factor of n. A fully aggregated estimator (FAE) is shown to have the same limit behavior in the stationary case and to have nonstandard limit distributions in unit root and near integrated cases, which reduce both the bias and the variance of the MLE. This result shows that it is possible to improve on the asymptotic behavior of the MLE without using an artificial shrinkage technique or otherwise accelerating convergence at unity at the cost of performance in the neighborhood of unity. Confidence intervals constructed from the FAE using local asymptotic theory around unity also lead to improvements over the MLE.
Charting Your Financial Goals, Benedict Koh
Charting Your Financial Goals, Benedict Koh
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Every one of us has financial goals but not many of us know how to go about achieving them. We often lack investment knowledge or expertise to design an investment plan that optimises our savings. Consequently, we adopt the default approach of leaving all our savings in bank deposits. By doing so, we have already made an asset allocation decision, one that is very conservative. Over time, we soon realise that this conservative investment plan is simply not working as our savings are not compounding fast enough to keep up with inflation. We need to invest more wisely so that …
Modeling Multichannel Home Video Demand In The U.S. Motion Picture Industry, Anirban Mukherjee, Vrinda Kadiyali
Modeling Multichannel Home Video Demand In The U.S. Motion Picture Industry, Anirban Mukherjee, Vrinda Kadiyali
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The U.S. motion picture industry has become increasingly reliant on posttheatrical channel profits. Two often-cited drivers of these profits are cross-channel substitution among posttheatrical channels and seasonality in consumer preferences for any movie. The authors use a differentiated products version of the multiplicative competitive interaction model to investigate these two phenomena. They estimate the model using data from 2000 and 2001 on two posttheatrical channels in the U.S. market: purchase and rental home viewing channels. Contrary to expectations based on business press commentary, after controlling for seasonality and movie attributes, the authors find low cross-channel price and availability elasticity for …

Effects Of Delay Order And D-Amphetamine On Delay Discounting In Rats, Shana R. Bailey
Effects Of Delay Order And D-Amphetamine On Delay Discounting In Rats, Shana R. Bailey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Impulsive choice is defined as choice for a smaller, more immediate reinforcer over a larger, more delayed reinforcer, whereas self-controlled choice is defined as choice for a larger, more delayed reinforcer over a smaller, more immediate reinforcer. Determinants of impulsive and self-controlled choices may be studied by employing delay-discounting procedures. When using a discrete-trials delay-discounting procedure, a difference in delay discounting as a function of order of presentation of delays to larger-reinforcer delivery was reported by one previous study, whereas another study reported no differences. In both studies, subjects had a history of exposure to both ascending and descending order …

Dealing With The Threats Inherent In Unproctored Internet Testing Of Cognitive Ability: Results From A Large-Scale Operational Test Program, Filip Lievens, Eugene Burke
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
There is little information available about operational systems of unproctored Internet testing (UIT) of cognitive ability and how they deal with the threats inherent in UIT. This descriptive study provides a much-needed empirical examination of a large-scale operational UIT system of cognitive ability that implemented test design and verification testing for increasing test security and honest responding. Test security evaluations showed item exposure and test overlap rates were acceptable. Aberrant score evaluations revealed that negative score change (higher unproctored scores than proctored ones) was negligible. Implications for UIT research are discussed.
