Temporal And Spatial Analysis Of Stream And Groundwater Interactions, Ryan Eugene Warden Dec 2011

Temporal And Spatial Analysis Of Stream And Groundwater Interactions, Ryan Eugene Warden

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Water chemistry and ecology of streams are impacted by the amount of water that exchanges between the surface water system and the adjacent saturated area, called the hyporheic zone, a dynamic area of stream channel sediments, which undergoes down-welling or up-welling of stream water. The rate and volume of water exchange between the surface water and the hyporheic zone are primary controls on stream ecology, but are challenging to assess. A common approach is to model the exchange rate with a one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation that includes solute exchange with transient storage zones, which is referred to as a transient storage …

Isotopic And Geochemical Investigation Into The Origin Of Elevated Uranium Concentrations In Treasure Valley Ground And Surface Waters, Idaho, Brian Hanson Dec 2011

Isotopic And Geochemical Investigation Into The Origin Of Elevated Uranium Concentrations In Treasure Valley Ground And Surface Waters, Idaho, Brian Hanson

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This study was initiated to evaluate potential source(s) of elevated uranium in ground and surface waters of the Treasure Valley in southwest Idaho. Groundwater in the area exhibits widespread but complexly distributed uranium concentrations up to 110 mg L-1, well in excess of the U.S. EPA drinking water standard of 30 mg L-1. Data from field sampling (surface water, groundwater, and solid sediments), laboratory experiments, and geochemical and isotopic analysis constrain the source of the elevated uranium. Results from surface water sampling show significant downstream increases in uranium concentrations. With irrigation return waters and shallow groundwater …

Optically Stimulated Luminescence Dating Of Gravelly Alluvial Fan Deposits: Links Between Climate And Geomorphic Response In The Lost River Range, Idaho, Megan Kearney Kenworthy

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Deciphering the role and importance of climate vs. tectonism in controlling rates and processes of erosion in mountainous regions remains an area of active research in geomorphology. Through dating of alluvial fan aggradation in the Lost River Range of Idaho, USA, we investigate the influence of Quaternary climate on hillslope sediment supply and transport capacity of mountain streams in this region. Fans along the normally-faulted western side of the Lost River Range extend ~2-6 km from the range front. Sediment is predominantly limestone-derived pebble to cobble gravels with a sandy matrix and is often sorted into coarse-fine couplets that suggest …

Coloring Problems, Thomas Antonio Charles Chartier Dec 2011

Coloring Problems, Thomas Antonio Charles Chartier

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This thesis considers several coloring problems all of which have a combinatorial flavor. We review some results on the chromatic number of the plane, and improve a bound on the value of regressive Ramsey numbers. The main work of this thesis considers the problem of whether given any n ≥ 1; one can color Z+ in such a way that for all a ϵ Z+ the numbers a, 2a, 3a, ..., na are assigned different colors. Such colorings are referred to as satisfactory. We provide a sufficient condition for guaranteeing the existence of satisfactory colorings and analyze the …

Comparison Of A Recurrent Neural Network Pv System Model With A Traditional Component-Based Pv System Model, Daniel M. Riley, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Photovoltaic (PV) system modeling is used throughout the photovoltaic industry for the prediction of PV system output under a given set of weather conditions. PV system modeling has a wide range of uses including pre-purchase comparisons of PV system components, system health monitoring, and estimation of payback (return on investment) times. in order to adequately model a PV system, the system must be characterized to establish the relationship between given weather inputs (e.g., irradiance, spectrum, temperature) and desired system outputs (e.g., AC power, module temperature). Traditional approaches to system characterization involve characterizing and modeling each component in a PV system …

Assessing The Culture Of Fresh Produce Safety Within A Leafy Green Producing Community, Kurt D. Nolte, Charles A. Sanchez, Jorge M. Fonseca Dec 2011

Assessing The Culture Of Fresh Produce Safety Within A Leafy Green Producing Community, Kurt D. Nolte, Charles A. Sanchez, Jorge M. Fonseca

Journal of Extension

The 2006 Escherichia coli outbreak in spinach prompted the implementation of unprecedented production strategies (Arizona Leafy Green Products Shipper Marketing Agreement) to minimize microbial risk in leafy greens. As the new procedures require assessments of physical intrusion and excrement in fields, outreach was initiated to educate adult (20-35, 35-50, and > 50 years) Yuma, Arizona residents about these guidelines and animal (e.g., pets, horses) stewardship. Pre- and post-assessments revealed that while sensitivity to fresh produce safety improved, adults over 35 years were more industry responsive. Citizen-based outreach programs, in communities where fresh produce is grown, could benefit field-level safety mitigation.

The Bp Deepwater Horizon: A Cautionary Tale For Ccs, Hydrofracking, Geoengineering And Other Emerging Technologies With Environmental And Human Health Risks, Mark A. Latham

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

This Article first discusses the technological issues surrounding the BP Deepwater Horizon and summarizes how regulator and industry reliance on an inadequate fail-safe device played a crucial role in this disaster. Next, I discuss the fundamentals of carbon capture and sequestration, hydraulic fracturing, and geoengineering; that is, I attempt to capture what they involve, followed by the environmental and human health risks they present. I then summarize the current or proposed regulation of these technologies and analyze whether those regulations are sufficient to adequately protect human health and the environment. I conclude with recommendations for policymakers and regulators to consider …

Comparison Of Hip And Knee Strength And Neuromuscular Activity In Subjects With And Without Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Lori Ann Bolgla, Terry R. Malone, Brian R. Umberger, Timothy L. Uhl Dec 2011

Comparison Of Hip And Knee Strength And Neuromuscular Activity In Subjects With And Without Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Lori Ann Bolgla, Terry R. Malone, Brian R. Umberger, Timothy L. Uhl

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Purpose/Background: Historically, patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) has been viewed exclusively as a knee problem. Recent findings have suggested an association between hip muscle weakness and PFPS. Altered neuromuscular activity about the hip also may contribute to PFPS; however, more limited data exist regarding this aspect. Most prior investigations also have not concurrently examined hip and knee strength and neuromuscular activity in this patient population. Additional knowledge regarding the interaction between hip and knee muscle function may enhance the current understanding of PFPS. The purpose of this study was to compare hip and knee strength and electromyographic (EMG) …

The Relation Between Black Hole Mass And Host Spheroid Stellar Mass Out To Z~2, Vardha N. Bennert, Matthew A. Auger, Tommaso Treu, Jong-Hak Woo, Matthew A. Malkan Dec 2011

The Relation Between Black Hole Mass And Host Spheroid Stellar Mass Out To Z~2, Vardha N. Bennert, Matthew A. Auger, Tommaso Treu, Jong-Hak Woo, Matthew A. Malkan

Physics

We combine Hubble Space Telescope images from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey with archival Very Large Telescope and Keck spectra of a sample of 11 X-ray-selected broad-line active galactic nuclei in the redshift range 1 < z < 2 to study the black-hole-mass-stellar-mass relation out to a look-back time of 10 Gyr. Stellar masses of the spheroidal component (M sph, ) are derived from multi-filter surface photometry. Black hole masses (M BH) are estimated from the width of the broad Mg II emission line and the 3000 Å nuclear luminosity. Comparing with a uniformly measured local sample and taking into account selection effects, we find evolution in the form M BH/M sph, (1 + z)1.96 …

The Effect Of Safety Climate, Teamwork, And Sustainable Motivation On Nurse Job Satisfaction And Intent To Stay, M'Lynda Owens Dec 2011

The Effect Of Safety Climate, Teamwork, And Sustainable Motivation On Nurse Job Satisfaction And Intent To Stay, M'Lynda Owens

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Nursing is a hazardous occupation, and occupational safety in healthcare, particularly hospitals, is gaining attention. The Institute of Medicine (2003) ranked hospitals in the top five industries for occupational injuries and illness. This study explored the relationship between sustained motivation in nurses as depicted by their perceptions of workplace safety climate, teamwork climate, and autonomy and their job satisfaction and intent to stay at their current jobs. Sustained motivation was manifested as the ability of the nurses to consistently and persistently attend to routine activities such as actions to ensure safety. Over one-third (36%) of the variance in sustained motivation …
