The Performance Of Serial, Matched-Filter Packet Acquisition Using Transmit And Receive Antenna Diversity, Shivram Ramanathan Dec 2011

The Performance Of Serial, Matched-Filter Packet Acquisition Using Transmit And Receive Antenna Diversity, Shivram Ramanathan

All Theses

The performance of serial, matched-filter acquisition is evaluated for asynchronous packet radio communications using transmit or receive antenna diversity. Transmit diversity is achieved using dual antenna transmissions of orthogonal preamble sequences and receive diversity is achieved using dual antenna reception of a single preamble sequence. Sequential test statistics are formed using non-coherent combining of the outputs from the orthogonal preamble matched-filters if transmitter diversity is used; the test statistics are formed using non coherent combining of the outputs from the preamble matched-filter in each receiver chain if receiver diversity is used. Threshold-based acquisition of the test statistics using both fixed …

Effect Of Environmental Conditions On Perceived Psychological Restorativeness Of Coastal Parks, J. Aaron Hipp, Oladele A. Ogunseitan Dec 2011

Effect Of Environmental Conditions On Perceived Psychological Restorativeness Of Coastal Parks, J. Aaron Hipp, Oladele A. Ogunseitan

Brown School Faculty Publications

We investigated the hypothesis that perception of psychological restorativeness during visits to coastal parks is modified by objective and perceived environmental conditions. Visitors (n=1,153) to California beaches completed a survey on perceived weather, environmental quality, and perceived restorativeness. We used generalized ordinal logistic models to estimate the association between environmental parameters and odds of perceiving higher levels of restorativeness. Visitors perceived greater restorativeness at beaches when ambient temperatures were at or below mean monthly temperatures and during low tides. The odds of perceiving the environment as more psychologically restorative were three times greater when visiting on days defined by government …

Separate But Equal? A Postmodern Analysis Of Educational Structures For Individuals With Disabilities, Donna Manning Dec 2011

Separate But Equal? A Postmodern Analysis Of Educational Structures For Individuals With Disabilities, Donna Manning

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Although curriculum theorists have sought to examine the subjective practices imposed within the context of schooling in terms of class, gender, and race, the impact of disability as a social category has been absent from the field. In this work, postmodern analysis is applied to the concept of disability in field of education; first, in terms of the nature and effects of the practices educators employ to define normality, and secondly, in the constitution of the students who deviate from the norm as subjects. The techniques and procedures of investigation, surveillance, exclusion, treatment, confinement, and medicalization developed and engaged in …

Speaking The Unutterable: White Teachers And Black Children, Amy Rene Dalton Dec 2011

Speaking The Unutterable: White Teachers And Black Children, Amy Rene Dalton

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the experiences of four White teachers teaching in a high-minority school in Macon, Georgia. Emily, Deanna, Richard, and I have crossed racial boundaries to establish successful teaching careers as White teachers working with Black students. Using a curriculum of place (Casemore, 2008; Kincheloe & Pinar, 1991; Whitlock, 2007) and the combined methodologies of personal-passionate-participatory inquiry (He & Phillion, 2008) and portraiture (Lawrence-Lightfoot & Davis, 1997) I explore these experiences. The key research issues are: why do these teachers remain at this school and why are they successful when other White teachers are not. This inquiry draws upon …

On Gorenstein Projective And Gorenstein Flat Modules, Chasen Grady Smith Dec 2011

On Gorenstein Projective And Gorenstein Flat Modules, Chasen Grady Smith

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Purpose: H. Holm's metatheorem states, "Every result in classical homological algebra has a counterpart in Gorenstein homological algebra". We support this statement by showing over commutative Noetherian rings of finite Krull dimension, every Gorenstein at module has finite Gorenstein projective dimension. This statement is the Gorenstein counterpart of a famous theorem of Gruson, Jensen, and Raynaud. Using this result we prove that over such rings, a module M having finite Gorenstein at dimension is equivalent to M having finite Gorenstein projective dimension.

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In a September 2 Education Week Commentary, Kahlenberg (2009) identified 5,000 schools across the nation categorized as failing or low-performing schools. A significant amount of attention and resources are dedicated to transform low-performing schools to high-performing schools promoting student achievement. Because of the increasing demand that low-performing schools be turned around, Georgia schools that do not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) two consecutive years for the same indicator are placed in Needs Improvement (NI) status and face escalating consequences from the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE). In the midst of all of the demands to meet local and state requirements, …

Constitutionalizing Immigration Law On Its Own Path, Anne R. Traum Dec 2011

Constitutionalizing Immigration Law On Its Own Path, Anne R. Traum

Cardozo Law Review

Courts should insist on heightened procedural protections in immigration adjudication. They should do so under the Fifth Amendment's Due Process Clause rather than by importing Sixth Amendment protections from the criminal context. Traditional judicial oversight and the Due Process Clause provide a better basis than the Sixth Amendment to interpose heightened procedural protections in immigration proceedings, especially those involving removal for a serious criminal conviction. The Supreme Court's immigration jurisprudence in recent years lends support for this approach. The Court has guarded the availability of judicial review of immigration decisions. It has affirmed that courts are the arbiters of constitutional …

Model Development And Incorporation Of Gis Tools For Floodplain Management, Andrew P. Darnell Dec 2011

Model Development And Incorporation Of Gis Tools For Floodplain Management, Andrew P. Darnell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Floodplain management consists of efforts to reduce flood damage to critical infrastructure and to protect the life and health of individuals from flooding. A major component of this effort is the monitoring of flood control structures such as dams because the potential failure of these structures may have catastrophic consequences. In order to prepare for these threats, engineers utilize inundation maps that model the flood resulting from high river stages. To create the maps, the structure and river systems are modeled using engineering software programs, and hydrologic events are used to simulate the conditions leading to the failure of the …
