Cephalus makes only a brief appearance in Plato’s Republic, but his conversation with Socrates has generated remarkable disagreement: while some think Plato’s portrayal of the rich old metic is largely positive, many, including Julia Annas, Peter Steinberger, and Mark Gifford, argue that beneath Plato’s superficially sympathetic portrait lies a subtext of condemnation and malice. Synthesis And Characterization Of Amphiphilic Cyclic Diblock Copolypeptoids From N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Mediated Zwitterionic Polymerization Of N-Substituted N-Carboxyanhydride, Chang Uk Lee, Thomas P. Smart, Li Guo, Thomas H. Epps, Donghui Zhang

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-mediated ring-opening polymerization of N-decyl-N-carboxylanhydride monomer (De-NCA) has been shown to occur in a controlled manner, yielding cyclic poly(N-decylglycine)s (c-PNDGs) with polymer molecular weights (MW) between 4.8 and 31 kg mol -1 and narrow molecular weight distributions (PDI < 1.15). The reaction exhibits pseudo-first-order kinetics with respect to monomer concentration. The polymer MW increases linearly with conversion, consistent with a living polymerization. ESI MS and SEC analyses confirm the cyclic architectures of the forming polymers. DSC and WAXS studies reveal that the c-PNDG homopolymers are highly crystalline with two prominent first-order transitions at 72-79 °C (T m,1) and 166-177 °C (T m,2), which have been attributed to side chain and main chain melting, respectively. A series of amphiphilic cyclic diblock copolypeptoids [i.e., poly(N-methylglycine)-b-poly(N- decylglycine) (c-PNMG-b-PNDG)] with variable molecular weight and composition were synthesized by sequential NHC-mediated polymerization of the corresponding N-methyl-N-carboxyanhydride (Me-NCA) and De-NCA monomers. 1H NMR analysis reveals that adjusting the initial monomer to NHC molar ratio can readily control the block copolymer chain length and composition. Time-lapsed light scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) analyses of c-PNDG-b-PNMG samples showed that the amphiphilic cyclic block copolypeptoids self-assemble into spherical micelles that reorganize into micrometer-long cylindrical micelles with uniform diameter in room temperature methanol over the course of several days. An identical morphological transition has also been noted for the linear analogues, which occurs more rapidly than for the cyclic copolypeptoids. We tentatively attribute this difference to the different crystallization kinetics of the solvophobic block (i.e., PNDG) in the cyclic and linear block copolypeptoids. © 2011 American Chemical Society.

Model predictions of the amount of the radioisotope 26Al produced in hydrogen-burning environments require reliable estimates of the thermonuclear rates for the 26gAl(p,γ) 27Si and 26mAl(p,γ)27Si reactions. These rates depend upon the spectroscopic properties of states in 27Si within about 1 MeV of the 26gAl + p threshold (Sp = 7463 keV). We have studied the 28Si(3He,α)27Si reaction at 25 MeV using a high-resolution quadrupole-dipole-dipole-dipole magnetic spectrograph. For the first time with a transfer reaction, we have constrained Jπ values for states in 27Si over Ex = 7.0-8.1 MeV through angular distribution measurements. Aside from a few important cases, we …

This brief is about the stress that occurs for caregivers of veterans due to secondary trauma. In policy and practice, caregivers can continuously monitor themselves for symptoms of secondary trauma, maintain a balance between professional life and personal life, and promote a supportive culture within the caregiver community; policies should acknowledge that secondary trauma stressors do exist for caregivers and should look for ways to reduce the negative effects of secondary trauma stressors. Suggestions for future research include using econometric models to detect relevant factors for risk of developing secondary trauma stressors.

A hydrogen storage system using a coiled nano-foil hydride and methods for forming the hydrogen absorbing nano-foil coil without backing materials. Intercalation of hydrogen in metal hydrides allows for large amounts of hydrogen to be stored at atmospheric temperatures and pressures. Nano-films provide a large surface area for storage of hydrogen. Excessive heating of the system is avoided by use of a modified magnetron source, and the deposition rate is increased by employing stronger magnetic fields. The foil formed is capable of storage and of mechanical self-support without breakage and expansion up to 20% of its initial volume.

A method for whisker formation on the surface of aluminum containing metallic 5 alloy fibers and substrates provides a support structure for many technical, medical and pharmaceutical applications. The novel surface modification of metallic alloy fibers and other metallic substrates involves heating the fiber or substrate in air at temperatures ranging from approximately 800°C to approximately 1000°C for a period of time ranging from approximately 10 hours to approximately 100 hours to form whiskers. We have experimentally demonstrated high-resolution compressive ghost imaging at the single-photon level using entangled photons produced by a spontaneous parametric down-conversion source and using single-pixel detectors. For a given mean-squared error, the number of photons needed to reconstruct a two-dimensional image is found to be much smaller than that in quantum ghost imaging experiments employing a raster scan. This procedure not only shortens the data acquisition time, but also suggests a more economical use of photons for low-light-level and quantum image formation.

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of using brief, intensive drill sessions in improving speech articulation in school-age children. Six children who met prerequisite criteria for inclusion in the study, including: (a) normal/corrected vision; (b) hearing abilities within normal limits; (c) ability to attend to task for approximately 15-minutes; (d) presence of a mild articulation disorder; and (e) enrolment in therapy the previous semester were included in the study. Results of the study indicated that all participants demonstrated more efficient gains in articulation of targeted speech sounds upon implementation of brief, intensive drill sessions. While the …
